Heading there in June, if I was to bring a gift from the USA, something like; cryo hops or flowable extracts or pliney the elder. What would you suggest bringing?
A bit hard to find any working women out there? Any old pros doing their thing? Bit partial to old Ukrainian women at the moment but I think they do not venture that deep...great vieo btw
I'm sitting here in New Zealand, 29 degrees Celsius, 60% humidity. Yet I can feel the chill winds and snow through my laptop screen. What an amazing place and some wonderful people. I thought I lived at the far reaches of the world and the final frontiers of craft beer. Then these guys came in and said..."hold my beer".
Great video! Hard to imagine craft beer got that far away. I was lucky to have tasted the Spitsbergen IPA, as my son visiting the Norwegian mainland found a can in the Vinmonopolet (Tromso, IIRC). It"s mesmerizing, and as you say, the landscape there is just aweinspiring.
Man, regardless of the beer, Svalbard has been on my wishlist for so long, just to experience the place. Maybe a brewery/good pubs will tip me over the edge. Just have to save up the money now...
Thank you for bringing us an important story…, wonderfully tough humans who have to embody the best characteristics of our nature to survive. It’s not surprising that a major part of their culture centers around the enjoyment of good beer. The best craft brewers reflect and incorporate local culture and values into their beer as is obviously done in Svalbard.
It feels like entering into another world this place, amazing place loved the vibe of the people. And the story behind the beer etc was also intresting, great video.
@@TheCraftBeerChannel Not Shackleton's 'Escape from the Antarctic' level. Still fantastic and engrossing as that book mind. Can't wait for your next book.
Oh Jonny, what a great video, great show. So interesting and you have the knack of letting the interviewees tell their story without unnecessary interjection. (Some so called TV professionals should learn this). Awesome scenery. Well done.
Thanks so much! When I was at journalism school they said the best way to get an answer from someone is to leave a silence. People want to fill it, so let them!
Wow, way to go Jonny! Excellent travel vid, and all that time making it was worth the wait. These people and those stories will stand the test of time. 5 years to get the permit to brew! wow, the fortitude, strength, passion and determination.
I have had the pleasure of visiting this brewery and it is fantastic. The beer is fantastic and it is a wonderful place. I do encourage anyone who is thinking of going, do it.
Incredible to hear how beer brings people together, even somewhere where it seems people shouldn't even be. Truly makes you understand how important the beer world is to all of us. Svalbard is definitely going down on my beer (and just general travel!) bucket list
Another beautifully shot and edited video. The reserved passion shown by the people is very interesting. There is a clear connection that they have with the islands and the beer. A truly fascinating look at a truly remote part of this world. Well done, CBC.
A fascinating video. The scenery is so bleak but beautiful. Kind of the opposite end of the scale to Central Australia. By far the best video of the year so far imho.😉 It shows how important beer is to the people. Cheers!
Great video. My big take away is that Svalbard is a lot like the valleys of South Wales - lots of abandoned mines, ex miners drinking carlsberg in dark pubs, snow covered coal-slag heaps perched on craggy outcrops … and polar bears.
All I can say is..... MORE JOHNNY!!.. Don't be afraid to to extend these out longer. I'll bet you could've talked about this for far longer by adding bits in... and we would've listened. Your commitment is astonishing and we all absorb and love it. Kudos to you mate (I feel like i can call you mate now having consumed alot of CBC content recently and literally dreaming about taking a trip with you 😂).
We are all mates! All brothers in beer. Really appreciate the kind words. It could indeed have been longer, though I always wonder how much of me people want and how much of others. Perhaps more on the next wild adventure!
Damn. Less than halfway through the video, the thought to add this to my bucket list of places to go see ran through my brain. Yeah, your words as you walked back from the brewery indicate that I would like this place. And the fact that it has good beer, hmmmmmmm.
loves this episode. being deeply interested in traditional norwegian ale i hope you would come to the norskkornølfestival one year, there are people there who have been brewing their farmhouse ale for generations and want to share their knowledge. i really think you would be interested in stjørdalsøl, which is a traditional ale where people make their own powerfully smoky ales
"man I miss warmth" cracked me up at the end. Thank you for investing in their story and allowing us a view into that part of the world. I really want to try their water and of course their beer.
Always impressed by the quality of these types of videos. You do a fantastic job telling interesting and compelling stories and connecting culture to everyone's favorite beverage. Keep it up!
Fantastic video, it takes something special to get the essence of a place, last couple of minutes captured that completely! Nice one Jonny, can you take Brad and me next time please?
Great video, been watching for a few years now and I think this is one of your best, really captured the feel of the place, look forward to reading more about in the book
There is a brewery called "Cerveceria del Valle Sagrado" about 3.000m high in the Andes mountains near to Machu Picchu. Might be worth a visit as well, the most remote place that I had a craft beer in my life 🙂
A lovely piece. Thank you, you really captured something of the place. I suspect there is a rich seam of beer-adjacent stories to be mined in the various small breweries sprinkled around the world and the folks that run them, and the idea that beer matters in communities seems to tie that together nicely. A really enjoyable half hour.
Excellent episode, mates! It really speaks to the indomitable nature of the human spirit not just to exist in a place like Svalbard but to thrive there. And, yes, craft beer and brewing is concrete example of that spirit as well as the brewer's persistence to bring it there. Thanks for the very profound look at how beer is an essential part of the human experience.
I understand what you talk about when you describe the special feeling you get when you are up in Svalbard. I lived and worked up there myself for 3 years and had my wife and 4 small kids with me. Some of the best years of my life. Unfortunately Robert had still not got his brewing license back then so the selection of beers was not too good. Thank you for a wonderful video that brought up many good memories. Cheers!
Right then, that’s another brewery that I need to visit. These videos are going to bankrupt me. However, I’m currently not coping with UK temperatures that well.
@@TheCraftBeerChannel well I myself never been to Svalbard but yet I've been wishing to go there because of Arctic Outpost Radio (aor.am) and your video just gave me the ultimate reason now. Next time I listen to this radio while having a pint I'll be remembering your trip. Cheers
Oh man. Well that was bloody wonderful. What a place! Seems like they've faired better than parts of Alaska that went down a serious drug hole to deal with the dark and cold. Also, brewing is hard, but after kneeling to dig out coal... holy moly!!

I live in Norway, which is undeniably bleak for 5-6 months of the year, even in the south, but that is truly bleaker. Truly, truly bleaker. Can you imagine living there? Waiting for the next shipment of malted barley and hops? The next shipment of pretty much everything, except polar bears? One of the highest turnover rates in Norway, which itself has among Europe's highest attrition rates for settled foreigners. Do the maths.
Who's booking tickets for Svalbard right now then?! Sun comes up in a month, and all that beer and whisky won't drink itself....
Psssh! I would if I could afford the ticket.
