Wtf!? You guys literally did all the basses! Major props for comparing all of them since no other video has done this. I wish I could be there and try them out with you. You guys are very lucky
I love the fact that you guys didn't slap the crap out of the basses you were testing, which is usually what happens during bass reviews Keep up the good work!
@@khumomoruke9324 Here’s a nice little history factoid. Fender named it the “Jazz Bass” because it was released as the companion instrument to the then new Jazzmaster double-offset body guitar.
Nick, always one of my favorite players on this channel. Both of you did a fantastic job showing the versatility in tones of the cornucopia of Jazz Basses you shared. Bravo- though I am somewhat late to the party
Will, thank you for that comment on Geddy Lee's targeted use of the bridge pickup on his '72 Jazz to replicate the Rickenbacker 4001 sound during the recording of "Moving Pictures." Such cool insight and backstory.
was really really loving the sound of the /discontinued/ american deluxe and not at all liking the sound of the american elite. BUT he was right, youtube audio is compressed so now i have to make it a life goal to get my hand on one and try it out
I have a Fender Standard Jazz Bass and a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass, at some points I do think that the Squire one is as good as the Fender one, I would say the Squier is more attractive to get such quality at this price.
When I was buying my bass last year (2018), I had quite a dilemma between the Vintage Modified and the Affinity. Despite the lower price, there were some features I actually preferred in the cheaper Affinity, and in the end, I chose it. I have been really happy with it: the playability, the ergonomics, the weight, the satin-finish neck, and the fit and finish. What surprised me most was that I didn't have to compromise on the sound. I think it sounds excellent, at least equal to the VM, if not better. It growls. And I was happy to see that It fared really well next to the more expensive basses in this test.
Never understood the hate for the MIM Fenders. I had an active MIM J-Bass from 2003-2008. I haven't played since then, so when I decided to pick bass back up, I knew I only wanted back in the Fender family. I wanted better than Affinity, but knew I couldn't afford an American Performer. I looked hard at Classic Vibe 70's and Vintera. I just couldn't make my fingers go where I wanted them on the P-Bass, so I knew it would be a Jazz for me. I couldn't justify the Vintera, so I landed on the Player J-Bass. I got a good deal on one (local store was remodeling, they lost the truss rod and pickup allen wrenches, so they knocked 50 bucks off). Absolutely love it. It just feels RIGHT in my hands. And, BTW, I have no problems with MIM instruments. The Mexicans have been building stringed instruments for 500 years, I think they know what they're doing.
Great work as always. It's cool to see how the affordable basses stack up against the higher end ones (Squire vs. Fender), and it's something that not everybody shows, so kudos. Those of us who want to play and still afford groceries appreciate it. Unfortunately the necks on Squire and Fender basses are just too meaty for my tastes. Being an Ibanez fan, is there any chance of showing the GIO Mikro, GIO, and Soundgear basses?
Bassic Gear Review Oooooooh, that's a good one too. I've been eyeballing a SUB Ray5, so I'm down for a MM comparison. Hopefully the necks are slim and fast.
Bassic Gear Review Ever thought of doing a comparison between as much (different, rather than same but at different price points )fretless basses you can find?
If you like thinner necks, you should definitely try a Japanese/Mexican Geddy Lee signature. The necks on those are much thinner than your typical jazz.
Awesome video. I have a Squier Vintage Modified that I got in a trade recently, and I love how awesome it sounds. IT actually plays and sounds better than the mexican standard my buddy owns. I got Aguilar 70s pickups+emerson wiring harness and an upgraded bridge that I plan to drop into the bass.
The difference man is quality the American instruments are made right along side the custom shop stuff in Corona California and the Americans feel loads better especially the necks a squire doesnt complete with a MIM let alone a 2000$ American fender
@@kylemaneage468 that's very true and you do get the quality of the woods and good sound but I don't have reason to spend out 2000 plus on something that isn't used every day and I'm more than happy with my squires and play and sound great!
@@maurobtx2314 I agree too. Just bought a vintage vibe 70's jazz. Amazing deal for cheap. They could put fender stickers on them and nobody would complain
The only people who think this are people who only own Squier. Not that they’re bad Basses, but comparing them favorably to an American Fender is just ridiculous.
There is no other video on youtube comparing the american standard vs professional. Congrats. I would like to see more about it. My first thought is that the professional is more confortable, but sounds less growly and less punchy... I'm I wrong?
The American Elite and the Mexican Geddy Lee signature basses sound better than you think. I own the Geddy signature, and my uncle has an Elite, and they sounded good. Not sure what happened, maybe the strings or the amp
I know right!? Their mexican geddy lee sounded awful, very puny and without any gnarl/bite, it almost sounded like a non-geddy lee. My mexican one sounds much better and rather like the american geddy lee in this video.
The “slap switch” cuts mids while boosting deep lows and and top end. What you’re perceiving as more midrange is actually the sum of more bass and treble. Play it in a full band mix, then you’ll hear less bass guitar while playing fingerstyle, and more bass guitar while slapping. Oh, and thanks for making such a great video. It’s probably time to do another one with the newest 2022 line up… if you can find a shop with more than two actual Fender basses in stock.
The American Standard kills. The Pro has the same tone but i don't know if you changed something on the recording stuff, but there is a big output difference between them.
Will, what type of jaguar bass do you own?? I have the squier vintage modified jaguar bass special, with the active electronics, pretty nice bass for $200 at the time.
Will has the right idea. Just buy a Squier, or a Mexican fender if brands are that important to you, and just throw in some of your favorite pickups and maybe a preamp if you're into the active stuff. At the end of the day, you'll have a bass that sounds like you want it to for cheaper than an American elite or whatever. I could understand buying an Geddy Lee USA though. That thing sounds amazing.

Personally, after the classic vibe, I don't hear a dramatic improvement in sound quality. Only thing that seems to change drastically is the Fender USA Geddy Lee Signature, which if anything, is just a very different character in sound. Not worse or better, just different. And I honestly prefer the sound of a more typical jazz bass more, even though I'm a huge Geddy Lee fan. But I'll share, there typically comes a point where you're not really upgrading sound in most guitars and basses after a certain price point, because there isn't much more you can do to the constituent parts of a pickup: a magnet, wire, bobbins, etc. Of course it has everything to do with what kind and how they're wound, but all that to say, after a certain price, you usually will always have decent pickups, and typically are paying more for a better feeling, more stable, or better looking instrument more than anything.
