Jeremy Hunt has announced the UK Autumn Statement which reduces taxes and increases wages, pensions & benefits.
Rishi Sunak and the UK Government are busy congratulating themselves on having beaten inflation while the data shows the complete opposite.
The new pay increases and lower taxes are only going to make the UK inflation problem worse by pushing the wage - inflation spiral further.

The reason UC is going up 'ahead of inflation' is because UC increase last year was below inflation. this is my understanding/remeberance as someone on ESA. Those of us on benefits shouldve gotten a 9-11% increase n we got 6% increase. This SHOULD be checked because although i am very much interested from a selfish perspective and hopefully thus retained the correct info, some of my myriad symptoms include cognitive issues such as memory loss and brainfog.

    • @davidbates3057
      @davidbates3057 5 месяцев назад +11

In all fairness, this is no different to what it's been since 2010, where most people have seen pay decreases in the 20% region despite the hourly rate "rising". Hell, arguably it's been like this for over half a century. People often harken back to the 50's/60's for stupid reasons, but the numbers have shown for a long time that if pay merely kept up with inflation/productivity and no higher, people back in the 50's/60's were getting an hourly rate in today's terms in the region of £22. It just makes a complete mockery of the so-called "minimum" wage and goes to show just how much the working class is being ripped off to fund dividend payouts and CEO indulgent lifestyles.
Yet still there are people willing to go to bat to protect the rich's right to rip us all off, having bought hook, line, and sinker into that false belief that they themselves will one day make it to that level because they're so much harder working than all the rest of us leeches who supposedly want to live the good life off the near non-existent benefit payouts because we're so work shy.

Post 2008 unemployment figures were _horrendous_ and wouldn't look better any time soon.
The solution? Anyone unemployed longer than X period is no longer considered unemployed. They were "out of the workforce" or some bullshit like that.
Month A unemployment is 8%. Month B, unemployment is 6%. Not because they found work, but because the numbers are so bad, they decided to drop them off the list.

The judge n doctor at my appeal took one look at me n slapped the company on the wrist and demanded the gov leave me alone for a minimum of 2 years -the max by law. The process caused such a deteriration in health that i went from being 'sofa-bound' to being 'bed-bound' and unable to process/understand/speak my language for an entire year! That was 9-ish yrs ago and from what ive heard, its only gotten harder up until the covid era. Blaming people who got long covid for not working and creating the 1mill empty jobs is not the solution, not their fault. it was the fault of uk covid policies that put them at risk -an island FFS!. And frankly, its not even the 'fault' of people with long covid being disabled, it that thousands of migrants left the uk during covid era and went home. They havent returned because of the toxic anti-migrant environment left in the wake of brexit^
So elderly tory voting population gets 8.5% n disabled get 6.7% when last year we got half of what we shouldve gotten inline with inflation -sounds perfectly fair to me, both groups on fixed income and noway to earn from a 2nd job, amiright?!?

As a small business owner with 5 employees, my take
    1. Rise in minimum wage, won't at moment affect me at present - but to take on a new employee, the hassle and cost to train them up is prohibitive I would try to go older and experienced.
    2. It pushes All wages up as you can imagine a 40 year old with 20+ years work experience working next to a 20 year old with f@@£k all experience, it will force up wages. Big companies ie tesco paying Overton just to get staff. This forces wages up for all companies to retain staff ( ie doctors stating they can earn more at tesco)
    3. Don't forget the 6% corporation tax increase on business means more pressure as well as wages to put up prices at a time when customer confidence if failing. Inflation falling as people are not spending
    4. I pass on price increases if I can or I go bust.

The issue is that they don’t seem to understand the affect of their inaction, and it was called ages ago what would happen if they did next to nothing.
It’s happening now, and a lot of people are going to be in big trouble. My mortgage as it stands is going up by 1800£ in December; when I remortgage it will likely be going up by around £1200 a month, I can afford it. But many many people can’t, and when the average person with the average salary can’t cover the average bills (where we are heading), shit is going to hit the fan.

There is a saying a liberal/ socialist with a heart until 30 and then you get wise and your brain kicks in - then you become more Conservative. To me I don't bother now much the same. Food price inflation rarely gets mentioned when talking about general UK inflation but it is still crazy high and is not an optional expense for anyone. The big jump in minimum wage (which is what the vast majority of supermarket workers are on) is going to push up food another 10%. So for a minimum wage worker, of the 10% increase, 30% will be tax/national insurance and the rest will likely disappear on the weekly food shop.

But we know the NHS needs more money and needs to be more efficient. Maybe they are playing the long game by reducing their services, which will push more people to private health care (or none at all) and allow more private companies to take up the reduce services. This will open the door to the American model: for profit medical services and no more NHS.
This would be a worrying model for the UK and we will have lots of people struggle to survive due to them needing medication which cost not a lot (at the moment) but would be a lot more if we go to a for profit medical system. MPs will have the knowledge of this and will be able to use this to their advantage and buy stocks at the right time.

If the inflationary drive is rent mortgages etc, then surely the wage increases aren't driving prices. Its the set costs of owning renting. My wage increases in the NHS have been swallowed up by recent increase in my mortgage and I have less available to spend. Surely direct control of the underlying causes of inflation rather than squeeze the shit out of the public till there is a contraction would better? I don't know man, If minimum wages go up and the business can't pay the increase to the employees what do you think happens ? The owner, greedy or otherwise, will end up having to do something to fix this new deficit, and more often than not, this involves firing someone to be able to pay everybody else. Each and every single time the minimum wage is increased you will also end up with business having more trouble hiring people, expecially low-skilled labor which are the only ones really affected by the minimum wage increase as higher skilled workers are paid higher than minimum wage (I hope).
Rather than minimum wage, I'd target inflation so that the current wage is liveable and people feel more secure with their savings.

People already don't have much money to spend on a day out with friends or family. Can not fire someone because it is the bare minimum amount of staff, can't afford to raise wage cause buying ingredients and paying to use the kitchen hasn't gone down, clients can't afford to go out once a week for meals with family or friends because everything is going up.

I appreciate your point about pay rise-inflation spirals.
However, that would only apply if this was a demand-led inflation.
    It is not.
It is underpinned by (Putin-induced) rising fuel and food prices - essential products where people no choice but to pay the increased cost.
The higher prices of non-essentials (luxuries) have come about more slowly, as the impact of higher food and fuel costs work their way through the supply chain.
Ironically, the ill-conceived and totally unjustified BoE interest rate rises are compounding inflation . . . and were never going to have any meaningful impact on this type of 'supply-led' inflation.
    People are struggling.
Far from helping, the BoE has simply added insult to injury, stifling the economy and causing unnecessary suffering to families and businesses.
Provided the BoE finally cognates reality and brings interest rates back down to ~2.5%, the economy can start to breathe again and no further 'significant' pay rises will be needed . . . and, more to the point, inflation will continue to fall, due to:
    (1) The natural reductions in food and fuel prices
    (2) Reduced mortgage rates
    (3) Reduced business costs
    (4) Competition in the market place, as retailers vie to re-establish their cashflow and customer bases

Agreed, it is cathartic to see others be frustrated by the endless “The Emperor's New Clothes” and “Stone Soup” that is living in the “free world”. But also disheartening to see so many people passively or actively look the other way, because in the short term it is not their fight.
