"Why am I fighting against my tendencies?" Such a great quote.

I was taught in graphic design school that we were to not try to design for the larger audience, those days were long over and to only design for smaller groups. What Mark says here is true " paint your passion, do it well and many others that are more like yourself will find the pleasure in it."
I got fairly good at impressionist portrait and landscape except was not all that passionate about it. I always wanted to do figurative abstract of all forms of life but very frightened by abstract. Possibly because of all the massive lame works out there. I always wanted to paint more like Cecily Brown but totally different subject matters. I finally set my foot down and said "I'm going there." It is very much the battle I was imagining it to be but I'm very happy to be struggling in it. I think I love struggling more than winning. It's that driving curiosity for the unknowns. What Mark is doing with these minimalist flat backgrounds and tying his figures to them is just incredible. Love to see his work in person some day.

Great interview and very insightful, like the other comments, I do really like the advice to paint what you love. It’s a good reminder and Mark, I really liked your website. I did notice in your bio though that you didn’t put in there that it’s your kids that you’re painting, I think that is really sweet and even puts a bit more of “you” in your stories. Thanks again Jeff for another interesting interview to paint to.

I can't wait to see that piece in person! Another great interview. this has given me so many great ideas. Also, Edward Gorey is amazing. I read The Gastly Crumb Teenies to my kids all the time.

I have been considering how to inject narrative into my work as of late, and hearing Mark break down what he was thinking when creating these was really instructive. Thanks Mark! Hope your kidney stones get better Jeff, that sounds rough!

Kidney stones are so painful. I'm following a low oxalate diet to prevent them (KSD) it seems to work. I love your podcast. Great interview with your cousin. Thanks for your hard work. I hope you feel better soon.

Music composition has the high the lows(colors), the hard lines and the soft lines, the drama or the whispering messages as does painting!

His work makes me think of Silent Hill a bit. Not the horror, but the vibe. Oh, just got to the part about liking horror.

I always wonder when "artists create art for themselves" ... does it make it tough to let go of these pieces when they sell?

    • @margifish

Yes the same, especially when your own children are your models! It would be (and is) tough for me
