Wemby is definitely a top 5 candidate for the DPOY this season. I wouldn't be surprised if he wins DPOY and ROTY in a single season no one has ever done that
I don't get it , people say chet because the only reason is his team and efficacy is better. That's it, he leads the NBA in blocks. And he leads chet in all other categories.
@@jamesh7469 Nope. Nothing like a "significant team composant" or even a "team composant" in ROTY, which is not "rookie MVP" award or "rookie playing in the best team" award. ROTY is a fully individual distinction : including 2nd years rookie is ok but counting their team record is out of topic.
I’d base it off what I’ve seen with their feet, wembanyama ankle completely rolled and it was amazing to see him just walk it off… Chet was out for his entire rookie season with a broken foot/ surgery. And tbh, once you get a surgery, you’re vulnerable to more injuries in that area, so I think wembanyama has the longevity potential much better than Holmgren, as of right now. If people wanna vote Chet they can, but we’re all gonna look back and say “damn wembanyama was really an alien” we have never seen a player like this.
Three thoughts: 1) he plays 28mpg 2) the league shoots a lot more 3s per game making blocks per game much harder.. especially with floor spacing 3) the league is far less physical making bpg harder bc one cannot get away as much.. Somehow he’s averaging 3.2-3.4bpg. Shaq averaged 3bpg twice… and he played 38 and 40 mpg… Wemby is historical as a roomie especially considering the circumstances
As much as I would love Wendy to win DPOY it isn’t happening. historically, that award has always been attached to a good team record. Someone else is going to get that award, even if Wemby deserves it.
This is an award that is historicallt based on anchoring a good team defense. As for ROTY its the opposite and team record doesn't matter. He'll likely be first team all defense though along with first team all rookie and if he finishes the season averaging 23, 11, 3, 1, 3 then he can make an all nba team this year. I do also think he'll retire with 5 DPOY awards in his career though
Historically? If thats the case explain to me why Tim Duncan never won DPOY while being the catalyst of one of the best defensive teams year season after season
@elcochino8139 tim is an outlier, he's the exception not the rule but even then my point stands to win dpoy you have to the anchor of a good defensive team, look at all the DPOY winners and tell me who won it being a great individual defender whilst having bad team defense. Right now, the favourite for DPOY is rudy gobert, the runner up is chet Holmgren because they each are the best defenders on teams that are top 5 in this league defensively. Statistically wemby is the best defender in the league right now but his team defense is trash
@@elcochino8139Tim god robbed a lot of awards since he wasn’t a flashy player the league didn’t really promote him much But do remember Tim Duncan competition were some of the greatest defenders of all time
I think he can do 8-10… he’s already at a DPOY level and he just turned 20. He could win his first as early as next year… the league doesn’t care about giving the same player DPOY as they do MVP so he could theoretically get it every year for as long as he is able… I think his defensive motor will likely cool off around 30 so he can easily get 8-10 in the next 10-12 seasons
@@hendrewpenie8640 you just contradicted your whole point 😂 then. An outlier, anomaly, whatever you wanna call it is bullshit. Timmy anchored one of the greatest defensive dynasties of all time and never once won DPOY. Regardless of what anybody else did this fact negates your whole point. Timmy was never a great defensive player on a bad team. He was the best defensive player on a great team. Wallace won it 4 fucking times. You telling me Ben Wallace was a better defensive player than Timmy 4 times?
2024: Rudy Gobert has worse stats, and can't hold Wemby's jock on defense, but his team is winning and has the best team d. So he should be DPOTY. Early 2000s: Tim Duncan is obviously the best defensive player in the league, and his team is the #1 defense perennially, but he doesn't lead the league in blocks... so random other guy is DPOTY. WEMBY is the DPOTY. Nobody else can touch him. Everybody just mad because hes a rookie. He shoulda been an all star too. Instead we get KAT. What a fucking joke.
Honestly I'd like to see him win DPOY as well, however its probably not happening. First off, the league doesn't like giving awards or team nods to rookies usually, other than ROTY. Secondly, personal and team defensive metrics are taking heavily into account for the award. Wemby has phenomenal personal defensive metrics, but his team still gives up 120+ each game. Another thing, defensive rebounding is enormous for defensive player of the year, and due to his minutes restriction, he gets limited amounts of them. Vegas doesn't even have him in the Top 10, and they are exceptionally good at predicting who wins the award. Again, I'd love to see him win, however it's extremely unlikely.
@Vourne Another thing limits his boards numbers : since he plays post up, his teammates try many shoots they shouldn't : if they miss, the ball rebounds on the hoop and he can't take the offensive rebound, so his defensive rebound are good but the offensive ones aren't. That's one thing to fix and he can't. Even though, if we look at his per36 rebounds, he is the best with 15, which is 2 more than Sabonis. Not bad for a rookie :-) Anyway he won't be DPOY because the other Spurs don't defend well : you can't be DPOY in a very bad defense, even if you do it well.
Heading into the trade deadline i definitely think Wemby should request for a trade out of the spurs, he will flourish under a better team who can utilise his skills better
Along side his skillset, that joel 70 is more reason for him to get 100+ ❤ i hope we witness itin his MVP run soon to come my guess is his 2 MVP run will be when we see . If sooner id really be shocked my lord😮
Btw dude I look at ur channel and I was wondering why u weren’t having more sub so I try to analyze a bit to understand maybe a reason and I found 1-2 points that I THINK can improve ur watch time and sub : - make ur videos a bit more dynamic and straight to the point - maybe avoid those very long sentences with no real meanings that feel like they are here just to make the video longer and no really have an impact on the subject or the video. Comapring wemby's season with hakeems 93 dpoy season is absurd. Looks good on paper but hakeem 55-27, they actually won games because of his defensiveness. Wemby has 11-44 not the same man! Don't get me wrong he's good but you can't or shouldn't win if you haven't at least won 60% of your games. Chet for ROTY!!
Actually it's not done yet Gobert is leading but if the NBA go political and want to advertise him since HE IS must see TV he could he's top 5 Actually let's see what is gonna be.
He won’t win DPOY… Same reason he didn’t get an all star appearance averaging 20/10: his team sucks… they are the 26th ranked defense right now.. Not a great argument for defensive player of the year on a team that is bottom of the barrel in defense
Video has only one real artument with fact and then you re talking with things like « he is changing the game » well you might be right but it’s not because you say it that i ll be convinced. I don't get it , people say chet because the only reason is his team and efficacy is better. That's it, he leads the NBA in blocks. And he leads chet in all other categories.
