  • This video demonstrates how to conduct a Fisher’s Exact Test in SPSS. The Fisher’s Exact Test is used as an alternative to the Chi-Square Test when working with small sample sizes.

Appreciated learning about the Chi-Square, the McNemar, and the Fisher's Exact all together. Helped to see how you would choose among them depending on what your data looks like.

Thank you for distinguishing when to interpret the Pearson vs. the Fisher's Exact. It's good to know which one to reference especially if one value is greater than .05 and the other is not.

At first, I was looking for the option to check for Fisher's Exact Test and then I watched this video and I see that it runs automatically. So anytime we have a smaller sample size and tables have cells with frequencies less than 5 then we interpret the Fisher's Exact Test. It is also interesting to me that this can change the interpretation drastically. Thank your Dr. Grande.

Hi Dr. Todd. Thanks very much for the helpful video. My SPSS software doesnt seem to be automatically running a Fischer's exact test when there is an expected count of less than 5 with the Chi Square test. Please can you give me any advice? Cheers, Lewis Butler

Thanks Dr. Todd. Please I would like to inquire more about Fisher's exact test in SPSS. I performed it on a sample of 141 patients with diabetic foot to see if there is an association between smoking and amputation. SPSS output table showed a value of 1.791 on the left side adjacent to "Fisher's exact test" sentence, and in the same row the P value was 0.454, and below the output table, the following sentence "The standardized statistic is -1.042.". what is the difference between the values 1.791 and -1.042 and how are they calculated?

Sir, for my data I'm getting 14 cells which have an expected count less than 5. The minimum being .29.
Does this mean I need to do the Fisher's Exact test, if so: in your video you've said the Fisher's exact test appears by it self when running the chi squared test however in my spss only -Pearson's chi sq
    -Likelihood ratio
    -linear-by-linear'
    -N of valid cases
    Comes up.
The little red arrow is pointing at Likelihood ratio which is 0.062.
Please advice on what to do. My sample size is between 30 to 37.
So do I assume as the Fisher hasn't come up the chi sq is appropriate? If this is so, which value is used the pearson's chi sq or the likelihood ratio?
Also how do you calculate/check the expected frequencies?
    Thank you.

+Fatima Tariq Only the appropriate test for the data should be interpreted. If the result is non-significant for that test then we would fail to reject the null hypothesis.

This is helpful. Just wonder if the Fisher's exact test is for counts less than 5 and must be dichotonmous, how about the situation when the count is less than 5 and it's not dichotonmous; but of ordinal scale(o to 4)? I tried this and SPSS doesn't give Fisher exact test value. Or what other test should be used if for this case? many thanks.
