    • @RichDunn
      @RichDunn  Год назад +1

      Sub-par parts in a small batch from supplier - only affected a few of the very earliest bikes - quickly rectified by Ducati, not a problem since. Ducati V4's are very reliable. They're also very thirsty and engine surging has been a problem on mine and a number of friends' bikes. I was disappointed with Ducati NA and my dealer's reaction to solving the surging problem, so I moved on to a Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer. IMPO the Ducati is slightly more fun to ride and the Triumph is a whole lot better to own.

      I think it's great. Better than my GSA, And miles better than the Streetfighter and Rocket 3. Of course, any powerful engine sitting at the traffic lights at 95F will produce a lot of heat. But the air ducts work really well to push heat away from the rider, especially once moving. And the rear cylinder deactivation above a certain engine temperature works well too.

    Hi Richard,
    Thanks for yet another good appraisal of the V4S.
    Today I have ordered a V4S sport with the higher screen and and the full option package, or at least that's what they call it here in Australia.
    I am trading in my Rocket 3 GT as it is a bit cumbersome in the twisties at speed (though still a great bike), and having followed your videos have decided to switch to the Multistrada as a good all rounder.
    I noticed on this video that your friend being interviewed has a GPS installed centrally behind the TFT screen.
    Could please let me know details of the mounting system? Would it be suitable for an Zumo XT or is it specific to the BMW system?
    Any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

    • @RichDunn
      @RichDunn  2 года назад +1

      Congratulations! I'm sure you will be happy. We thought the optional screen was higher, but Erik bought it and it only appears to be tinted, not taller. I get it re: R3. I enjoyed mine, but it can be hard work. You'll love the agility of the MTS V4 once you get used to it.
      Jerry has the BMW Navigator (which I think is the same as the Garmin Nav 6?)
      He says:
      BMW Mount Cradle @ BMW Dealers Part # 77 52 8 544 464 - $200
      RAM M8 Handlebar Base B 367 - $14
      RAM Short Double Socket Arm B-201-A $18
      RAM Ball adapter w/ AMPS Plate B-347U 1" Ball - $9
      ... the RAM stuff should work, but you'll need a cradle that can accommodate your specific GPS. I would advise you purchase a waterproof GPS, or be prepared to use your iPhone 10+ (when they became waterproof) for navigation. Personally if just going to a specific destination I'll use Waze on my iPhone Pro 13. And if I want a specific waypoints route, I'll use a Beeline Moto. It works for me, but we all have our own preference!

    Rode a v4s from almaty to astana and back. Took the long route, avoiding the highway as much as I could on the way there, exclusively highway on the way back. Lovely engine and suspension. However, the shape of the tank is terrible compared to a GS or Africa Twin. The stock seat is way too low. The stepped seat design is not only ugly, but is very restrictive when riding off-road. Transitioning from sitting to standing is compromised.
    I was lucky that there are hundreds of gas stations that sell quality premium along the route, otherwise would have had bad fuel anxiety. Regardless of rpm it guzzles fuel.

    • @RichDunn
      @RichDunn  Год назад

      Did you try the seat in the highest setting? It's the least capable off-road heavyweight adventure-tourer and by far the thirstiest IMHO. You'd probably enjoy the new Rally version more, with its larger fuel capacity (physical size is the same, but 7.9 gallons) and rear cylinder deactivation at low speeds to increase economy. But ultimately the MTS V4S is the sportiest road bike in this group, so if you ride off-road occasionally, it's not the best bike for you personally.

    Gas mileage and range, shaft drive, resale value, no diving under breaking, excellent slow speed stability, better TFT interface vs the Color Red, amazing engine notes and loads of power. And the winner is GS 😃. Did he ever stopped riding for a sleep? He just got that bike.

    • @RichDunn
      @RichDunn  2 года назад +2

      He's a GS fan-boy, and will own another because he does very high mileages, which shaft drive and range are held in higher regards to. If he buys another he will miss the power of the Ducati, its lighter weight, the active cruise control, blindspot monitoring, one-handed screen adjustment, the more comfortable seats, the better handling, ride quality, and a whole host of other things. But no bike is perfect and it depends on what features are the most important to us. He may well end up with a 2022 Tiger 1200 GT Explorer, because of the shaft drive and 321 mile range, plus not having too give up some features like blindspot monitoring, and long 10k service intervals.

    • @RichDunn
      @RichDunn  2 года назад +3

      Many thanks! Yes. The engine sounded sweet as anything and he'd already covered 8k miles. But Ducati wasn't happy with the quality of the valve guides (supplied from one of two suppliers) and decided to recall those few bikes as a precaution. Very responsible, handled very fast and efficiently and they gave him free additional servicing, and about $1,000 in Ducati merchandise/parts. I actually know of two unaffected owners who were annoyed their bikes weren't subject to the recall because of the generosity of 'make it right' credit from Ducati to those affected! 😀 I know six owners (friends) and nobody has had a single reliability problem or warranty claim, other than Jerry. Re: your questions, myself and five friends who own them, believe all of those points you mention are excellently covered. The only thing I would say is some of us (myself included) felt some handlebar vibrations (usually on a long ride, at slow speed, on a cold day) for the first couple of thousand miles, and then it smoothed out. I can ride mine (4k miles) all day long without that now. Jerry has done some near 700 mile days and says it's more comfortable than his GSA was. And I agree with him. Buy with confidence, it's the best all-around road-orientated ADV bike right now - buy with confidence! P.s. The GSA and Tiger 1200 Explorer have a better range (8 gallon tanks) and shaft-drive, but aren't as much fun/dynamic, or as good looking; but worth considering if those are really important to you.

    Never got more than 3200 miles out of any tire on any bike. Including K1600.

      The K16 is one of the worst IMPO. All that weight and torque just eats them up. If you ride sports bikes in hot climates, 3k from a rear is good. My Streetfighter V4S would be going off by 1.5k and done by 2.5-3k. But if you can only get 3k out of a tire on 'any' of the 1200 ADV's - time to change up a gear! 😀

      @@RichDunn never got more than 1.7k on my ZX14r and less than 2k on my Tiger 900 Rally Pro. Have an incoming GSA too. When I hear about people getting wok out of a tire I just can’t imagine how they’re doing that.
