- I saw a viral DIY TikTok / Instagram reel how the man made a bowl by just using just a Mitre Saw. You may it is surly impossible right? But he did, so I would like to test this idea. One more thing - there was a ton of comments about safety during this process. They said it’s dangerous! Let’s find out if it really is!

I sat on the edge of my seat waiting to see if he was going to hold those dowels as he cut them down on the mitre saw.
Next I was cringing to see how he cuts out the bowl, shapes the outside, and address the hole in the bottom of his bowl.
My best guess was he'd use a table saw...but it never happened.

If you want to keep your fingers, my impression is never/ever do this on a mitre saw! There are much safer ways to hollow out wood for a bowl! Just my opinion!
"Safer" - like a lathe - with it spinning at 1200 rpms and you need a face shield? That kinda safe? Walking down stairs is unsafe unless you do it right - same for ALL POWER TOOLS. Slow, steadly, never take your eyes off it, no gloves, no wrist ornamentation and you'll be just fine, Only minor difference would be to use a stick to turn it and make sure it moves freely.
You should see what i can do with a table saw ! It is dangerous yes in the untrained hands and so is crossing the road if you have not done it before.
@rafezetter8003 it's obvious your an expert with a late. Called a backer plate and those are screwed on firmly. And I'm not even sure a wood lathe turns 1200 rpm.
@@spiritburnersTraining has nothing to do with it. If that blade bites for any reason boom. Even the potential of flying metal from a blade or other saw component. Hit a sap pocket in some heart pine and things get interesting fast.
It does, I have a Record Coronet lathe modified which has a top speed of approximately 3200 revolutions per minute unloaded but I rarely use mine above 850. I might go above 1000 just for fine polishing but I never find the need to go any faster than that and yes, I've been using lathes for 25 to 30 years both in metal and woodwork and in fact I use those materials on either lays you just need to know what you're doing.
I'm a design engineer and while I don't get my hands dirty during the day, I do in the night and the weekends in my own personal workshop .
I can assure you it is perfectly safe to think out of the box once you know what you are doing and the limitations of your own personal skill and the machine are always always in your mind. I'm an advocate for this and I'm fed up of nanny state telling me what I cannot do with any machine that I own. For example, over here in Europe we're not allowed to use data disks well there is no actual ban. It's just they make it bloody awkward by limiting the size of the arbour on table saws here but in my opinion they are perfectly safe as long as you know how to use them, but nanny states says they're not and then we might cut our hands off..
And now look in America, you have saw stop being forced upon the entire country because of patents and money, I've now understand. sawstop have released the patent I understand subject to certain caveats and while I agree is an excellent safety system it is ridiculously expensive. Safety should not be expensive. It should be there for everyone to be able to afford it.
But just look at how many years it's taken for them to do this while they're raking in millions they could've released this painted technology a few years back. Corporate lawyers disgust me.
The Argument of always been about money.
Seems like slow and steady will be ok. Highly figured burl or very knot filled pieces could be jumpy.👍
I actually like the look of the non cut bits so it sort of looks like a butterfly.

I am shocked he used plugs for the axis! I think they are made from compressed wood. Even if they were solid wood, the Melamine isn’t!
Double-stick tape another board to the bottom of the workpiece. Then use a nut and bolt (aluminum or brass suggested) to fasten it to the fixed piece, as the pivot. If you're afraid that even that will pull through, add washers. This would even allow a deeper cut, if you're brave enough.
It's a cool idea but it still scares the bejeebers outa me.

Thanks and yeah it's dangerous, I've seen kick back on mitre saw. The dowel is not really secuting it.
That said the way you use it is fine, I just find your hands are too close and you could have used something else to move the piece.
He should also be careful about his ring in the workshop...
This is great it's something I've done for awhile on both my mitre saws of different blade sizes and I've also done this on my Dewalt table and done many other things where tools have been used not necessarily for what they are designed for however I am an Engineer and engineer's solve problems and use machines to do that.
Yes it is dangerous but it's no more dangerous than crossing the road without training and that is something the general population of the world over the last 20 years has forgotten how to do in my opinion so there is the caveat go ahead and do it, but take all reasonable precautions to prevent an injury do not get distracted and in my opinion do not use the 8 mm Dowl shown I would prefer a stainless steel pin or even the type of pins that you see that hold shelves up in IKEA furniture and similar one of those which is only about 4 or 5 mm would work very well I do especially.
using a wooden Dowl like the one suggested I think is asking for trouble and for God's sake do not wear gloves when you do this because gloves will allow your hand to be pulled into the blade and cause horrendous damage, a quick cut on your flesh with a circular sore ungloved is much easier for the surgeons to sew back together than one ripped to shreds because you've put leather gloves on which do nothing whatsoever to save your fingers and hands! Explore the tools that you have and expand the envelope of achievement.

Interesting, too bad we can't get real units or at least conversions from euro units to useful units.
Actually they are metric units, used in virtually every country in the world.
Since you have a web capable device, you can search “convert” and input the metric to get in. You HAVE succeeded in making folks in the US look either stupid or arrogant.
