What is the point of the Holosun DRS-NV?

- I tried to figure this thing out, I really did. But ultimately, the DRS-NV seems like a very well fleshed out proof of concepts, not a product that occupies a particular niche.

Holosun announced that future models will come with a Raid IR light head, and current owners will get a voucher for a free one. So that helps with active aiming at least.

Are you on Reddit by chance? I can confirm his information is 100% correct.another bit of information about the Holosun Raid is it will have a crane port and while this hasn’t been confirmed yet,it might be compatible with SureFire parts

I feel like the thermal will be the same story: you can’t navigate with it, it’ll only be there for when you already know somebody/something is out there in the shadows. The difference being that it would hopefully be more useful and not give your position to somebody else with night vision capabilities. It would still suck for competition or training cause targets will be ambient temperature.
The iris is the only next thing I personally care about, and that’s so somebody will hopefully get me a 321 for half off 😂
yeah, my issue with this thing, even in the niche scenarios where it makes sense/works (you can see fairly well without it, you're just hunting down say, animal in the dark), you're still struggling to find things.
At least the thermal excels in that specific moment
@@BrassFacts Can the thermal passive aim? Just keep the thermal part off and use it as a normal red dot with nvgs until you decide you want the thermal part? If that's possible it seems neat as a way to make targeting easier at night without being completely goofy.
@@novembermike512 yeah the thermal one is almost identical to this in function just instead of NV it's thermal
@@BrassFactsHow's the light transmission in IR? Good enough for passive aiming? I imagine the giant brick of the object that's not the window doesn't help things.
Are you trying to argue against the value of using thermal on a rifle ? Because that value has already been proven in hunting and war fighting. So the question would be is holosun’s take on a rifle mounted thermal of any additional value? I’m hoping that the heads up see through lens combined with a thermal overlay on the Holosun will enable more situational ability to target warm tissue over the traditional clip on or dedicated thermals that have a tiny screen that requires you to focus on a very small window and field of view and lose all situational awareness. At least that’s what I thought when I clicked on the purchase button.
Really appreciate the honest review. If a company gets upset from criticism, then maybe they need to do more real world testing with people outside their company.
I appreciate the honesty on this one. I know it's tough being honest about problems qhwn you want to atay on the good side of manufacturers. Especially when the product seemed so promising at first.
Honesty always pays of in the long term.
Makes sense, NVG tech gets more expensive and complicated as time goes on but thermal is the opposite, it gets cheaper the better it gets, getting a decent thermal sensor in a red dot package in the price range they're selling it for makes more sense than trying with digital NVG tech
If you are ok with using it as a periscope.
@christophergreen2892 that effect wouldn't be as bad using the thermal version as you'd clearly (Should see it clearly anyways) see the target since thermal tech has always been a "digital camera", NV needs a tube to be worth a fuck or else your going to have to light up everything like a Christmas tree with IR lights meaning anybody else with even shitty nvg will see you coming, that's why other digital NV scopes that are more on the cheaper end are marketed as hunting scopes for coyotes and such, the thermal not needing supplementary light means it can see as much as it's going to see at all time resulting in you not having the periscope it, all that's if the system works and the thermal sensor isn't shitty making everything look like minecraft, I'm wondering how battery life is using the combined thermal since thermals will go through batteries alot faster than nods will normally

Brass doing his best Hop-style title. We love it
Made me think it was a Hop video until I watched the intro 😅
Good stuff, now I look forward to your review of the thermal version.
i find the thermal aspect much more interesting than the night vision in this optic. It’s like actually a lot cooler and even has a significant daytime application. the only part of the NV thats cool is doing the overlay/outline ODST mode, which is the coolest shit ever but obviously cooler on NODs. I could see this being cool for hog hunting, and maybe an advantage in certain scenarios where your target is walking in on you, but this just isn’t for combat lmao no. It could be kinda sick on a machine gun tho, especially in a firing position or on a vehicle. At the end of the day it’s a cool optic and proof of concept for the technology, this is version 1.0 at best really more like alpha version. I see tons of future potential.
The issues you describe are exactly what I assumed it would have when it was shown at Shot Show. For me, it was DOA. If electronic NV isn't quite good enough on larger dedicated devices, it wasn't going to be good enough as a part of a red dot. The thermal, however, I feel may have more potential. Hopefully, Holosun lets you review that.
Like for the like God, engagement for the engagement throne. But seriously, very entertaining skull drag XD
Nice Marathon you got there. I see more and more of you guys popping in screen with one.
had to buy it used, but it's a neat watch.
It’s a workhorse mate; May it serve you well like it has served me!
Awesome video! I hope you can do the thermal one soon. Also I hope to see a POU video on that AK!
I put one on my PTR-9c. Another good reason to have that permanent rail. I love this thing's compatibility with MP5 effective range and I actually found a black Invisible Sight NGAL that loves it too. I even zeroed it with a Dead Air Wolfman mounted. Beats wearing my old PVS-5a. Maybe it's Marine thing for me. Gotta' love it. Semper Fi.🇺🇲
I tried the hollow Sun and the thermal at shot show out at Progun club, and although the idea was me, I was impressed with neither one. But it shows that they’re on the right track to what could potentially be a great idea. I have no doubt son will, continue to push this
Bought one. Sold it while I still can while there is still curiosity about it.
Even if it’s not great, this product is still pretty unique. The thermal is probably the way to go for this form factor.
Thank you for your honest video. I was about to buy this DRS-NV until I saw your video.
I really like the night time videos and night vision reviews. I know nothing about the subject and it seems really easy to spend a lot of money only to regret it. Thanks
yeah, it's for sure a money pit.
Had this thing pegged as useless since it was introduced, but man, didn't know it was this bad. Good field report, you and Hop are the type of autists the world needs.
The thermal seems more useful. Be pretty cool if they could design a thermal overlay for a magnified scope. Then you could have the ability to spot thermal sources and still have a robust analogue scope without having to deal with the trouble & zero shift of a clip on.
Thank you for the review
This is a cool concept that will likely be improved upon in the future.
Signature reduction and this passive aiming is the goal. We just need a maturing and merging of several technologies to really get there.
I have one of these. The "party trick for some buddies after a couple beers" is 100% accurate.
Where I think it may be better is for if you have a buddy with a peq and you are piggybacking off his UV during a hunting trip.
Holosun does have some seriously promising looking products coming soon, the Raid, IRIS and Raid-IR have me excited
You’re doing great!
Brassfacts Friday 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Always here for the ride
I was skeptical when this was announced. I can't imagine any small device like this offering any sort of night vision ability that is worth the price of admission. Maybe exclusively home defense in a dark house? Maybe? but even then, I'd probably still rather have just a flashlight.
There is a company that makes something like this, but it's a thermal heavy machinegun sight. That one is pretty impressive as it's high resolution and again, thermal. We were using one mounted to a M2 at a demo, was quite a hoot, but yea, this is one of those "time, distance and shielding" situations where this device doesn't provide enough offset to make things better.
Just get an AGM rattler at this point and don't even bother with the nv version. I can't believe people seriously considered this to be not shit. So many people were talking about how jealous those who had actual nv and thermal gear were going to be because elitism is going to be destroyed or some other cope.
Nice video, bud!
But seriously, what are your thoughts about the thermal?

I respect your honesty. I too dabbled with this one and thought the same. I agree PVS14 is way more superior.
Man when I checked and didn’t see a video a couple hours ago I was worried we wouldn’t have #BrassFactsFriday this week.
Same, I got done drinking my coffee, eating my beer, and was like "whelp, looks like I have to go do productive things today"
I feel the Thermal makes more sense in general then the NV, especially if you have nods already.
I like the new watch.
Honestly, after this review I am *more* likely to buy this. I get the downsides, but for my use cases I can tell from the footage that it would work out pretty good for me. And the price mentioned (not the price shown as MSRP) makes it a pretty appealing option. I'll watch for a sale.
Nova is a national treasure.
Interestingly, earlier prototypes had a built-in illuminator. Not sure why Holosun removed it when the sensor clearly needs more light.
Also, I am once again asking what song you used in the intro.
Aww ye BrassFacts Friday! Can't say I'm all that surprised it's not a great or practical product.
The only use case I can think of for something like this (even if it works well) is a home-defense weapon system where you don't have time to grab your NVGs but don't want to immediately begin using your WML.
Thermal one is the only one im really interested in personally
Thank you for not being a holosun simp
Yeah,I’m good on this..I will continue saving for my dual analog nods or at least a PVS-14.maybe later on down the road I’ll pick up the thermal version,if it’s worth af
Id like to get the thermal one and run it along with my sting ir mounted on my head alongside a pvs14. I feel like being able to either passive aim through it with the pvs14 or use the thermal after spotting something (fox/coyote/skunk).
I did some dev work on digital night vision and have been trying to figure out forever how to define that realm where it needs active IR but maybe you could get away with it in the right scenario? "Passive plus" is a great way to put it.
I saw the outcome from longer range than either of these new holoyuan devices can ID a treat
Where do you guys do your training in Eastern Oregon? I’m up in the Northeast in the Blue Mountains, if you haven’t you guys should check it out sometime it’s awesome up here tons of great wilderness.
Damn im glad i watched this guna still do more research but i trust your judgment
As always, Nova is the best part of the review
I've been waiting for the Holosun thermal to be available. Do you believe it will be significantly more useful?
So not good for first time buyers into NV??? That camera that you was recording with is just as good???? For the digital NV???
I appreciate your opinion because of the amount of NV experience you have.. Thank you for putting in the work and making an informed decision.. I thought this might be good for a position or a post?? I wasn’t thinking for running and gunning use….
Dumb extra question, would there be any value to it just as a camera if they stripped it of NV stuff?
I think it'd be neat. A great way to have a action camera.
How's the thermal performance? I didn't see it anywhere in the video
Would love the odst hud in a scope. Love that game to death
I’ve got an analog night vision scope with a fixed 2.2 magnification. It fits this weird niche where I’m never really certain what I should use it for. Would love to see if you had any ideas?
How is that thermal?
Have you used the nvg30? Love to see a review on it
I suspect it's going to be on par with a sioynx aurora. so basically useless for actual dark nights.
As much as we (or at least, I) really want a weapon mounted nightvision capable device with the added benefit of a red-dot there is not one that exists in a standalone feature.
Nothing in nightvision can come close to the gen 3 variants so i will continue to use my weapon mount for the PVS-14 and see if i can add a good red dot in front. One runs out of room fast on the rail and it would be nice to have a single device that combines both but as this video shows, we're definitely not there yet.
The device would be insanely expensive to use an analog tube inside of a red dot. INSANELY expensive and probably the reason Holosun is trying digital no doubt.
The weapon mounted PVS-14 is great and the mount is expensive and hard to find but for now imo is the way to go.
What do you think about the thermal one ?
Lol brassfacts with an AK hits different. I like it.
The DRS-TH really has me interested, but having had a $600 digital NV scope for coyote hunting from Scheels and finding it to be absolutely useless for sight acquisition much like the DRS-NV, I can say I'm a little nervous about the DRS-TH
My bad it was a $500 digital NV scope --- the Sightmark Wraith HD 4-32×50 Digital riflescope
Had high hopes for this one
Important question: How does Nova handle the gunfire noise? Does she hide in the car while the cool guy stuff happens, is she comfortable with the loud bangs, what was the training to get to that point? Shooting near my pups was not due to fun times so now they get spooked from canned subsonic 22's, which is a minor sad.
she knows what guns are and while she doesn't freak out she tends to go where it's quiet, and then emerges when the it's clear we're done.
We make a point of leaving camp a fair bit away from the shooting so she can just chill in camp.
I had a feeling it was going to be more of a novelty item.
What gloves are you using at 2:19?

@BrassFacts thank you again. They look like they're worth a damn. What about using the red dot and digital sights like a cheap sig romeo 9T? Is that viable?
I think the neat part is what will be the Gen 2 or Gen 3 of this product look like.
They might as well wait until someone else figures out digital NV
I agree with the thesis that this product just isnt ready but digital night vision will be in parody with PVS-14s one day, and when its finally affordable all of a sudden people will see less utility in NVs because its no longer exclusive and cool.
HEY BRASSFACTS I JUST GOT MY FIRST SET OF NODS I HAVE A PERSONALITY NOW :D
The jokes just kept coming the whole vid 🤣🤣🤣
The best part of this was the Blink 182 reference 😂
So for someone who can't spend 5grand on real night vision could this work if used with surefire vampire or something like that
that is how we used it for the majority of usage (that's the thing that looks like a flashlight). No I don't think it's worth it
Yeah the thermal version seemed more the way to go for me. I'd rather have NODS to see where Im going and the hybrid thermal when I need to shoot or track a moving target. The NV version just doesn't really do NV well enough to collapse all those other devices you'd need for NV into the unit.
Interesting. Do you think, if the thermal version’s thermal actually works, that it would be a decent product? The thermal makes more sense, since you aren’t using it for navigation
I think so? perhaps? Never actually used it.
How is the thermal?
whats the background music you use?
You can literally buy gen 3 night vision monoculars for roughly 1k or 1.5k, sure they may not be the most standardized units but they're more than likely to still serve you somewhat well; I got an ITT 6010f for only 1600 and its been awesome for being essentially a Proto Pvs 14. This alone makes this rather questionable already
5:29 lmao. Genius
But how do you like the thermal?

The algorithm requires engagement
So, the parachute flair would be the better option? I was seconds from getting one (Holosun) $999. Instead, I got a 407 for $199 on sale.
Is that the night vision one?
How’s the thermal?
Feel like the thermal would be a better combination than just the NV
