  • The weather and COVID-19 restrictions have made fishing very challenging lately. In this episode I venture out in Port Phillip Bay kayak fishing in extreme fog in my Hobie Pro Angler 14 kayak. The visibility was very poor which makes kayaking quite dangerous with surrounding boat traffic. It was also only a very cold 2 degrees. However I still got out there, gave it my best and managed to catch a bag of squid before any proposed stage 4 lockdown come into play. #squidfishing #hobieproangler #hobiefishing squidfishing eging

    Hi Alan, I live in Ballarat, so obviously I can't get to the bay at the moment. However, I love the information that you give. I am 47 years old and I have been fishing all my life. But the lessons learned from watching your program is invaluable. Thanks so very much, keep up the great work. Gibbo.

    Great vid Alan. As we’ve been discussing about squid down in my neck of the woods, I feel like sometimes the drift here is too fast for good squid fishing. I was out there today and the current was ripping through along Balnarring beach. Stay well and safe mate.

      Thank you. Yeah optimal conditions can be strange strange. Sometime dead calm is to calm and the squid jigs dont work as effectively, then strong currents can be too strong. I love calm and clear days with a little bit of breeze.

    Hi
    My last 2 squid from different Melb land based spots were caught on a Shimano Sephia Egixile BB jig in Natural Rainbow which sadly has been discontinued - lost that to a line that snapped while casting 😑😑
    Question - do you end up with sessions where you have caught no squid ? Like putting in huge hours for no result ?
    I recently hired a boat on Tyabb Bank and tried different spots/ various colours; could not get them to hit anything.
    What conditions do you consider when heading out ? Eg. Tides/ wind speed or direction / lighting conditions etc.
    Thanks and appreciate the videos

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 года назад +1

      Hi Matthew, Thanks for comment !!! Squid fishing is one of those unpredictable things. Earlier this year i had sessions where I bagged out in 20 minutes than at the same spot the next week and have to put in hours just to get a few. Its even harder when your land based at least on a boat or yak you can cover ground to try and find them. Squid can also fire up on sunrise, sundown and between tide changes so it can be insanely quiet and than go crazy. I had a session a few weeks back nothing for 2 hours than it went nuts and i bagged in 20 minutes. Fishing can be real tough at times, long hours and sometimes those hours are unrewarded, The best thing is not to get down, stay positive and keep getting out there as your luck will eventually change. My preferred squid fishing is early morning, on a rising or high tide. Light winds, clear waters. If your not getting hits dont be afraid to mix up the squid jig colours and sizes. I agree shimano have made some strange product and colour choices lately. I do like the yamashita rainbow jig that has been very productive for me. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions

    • @matthewlee1383
      @matthewlee1383 4 года назад +1

      @@fishingmad Appreciate all the info there! I recall watching your kayak vids where you bagged out in like 20 - 60 mins. Talk about a busy hour on the water haha.
      I'm the sort of person with more than average OCD so time wasting drives me insane. Not catching doesn't get me down, just gets me thinking what turns them on, or off! There does not seem to be a standard guide which they seem to go by which can get frustrating!
      Anyhow, I keep trying different spots but usually find myself and the southern end of WP and PPB.
      Tight lines!

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 года назад

      Thanks Matt, yeah I too have had many hours on the water chasing them. Can be super frustrating putting countless hours of not catching them without a consistent pattern but that fishing. You have plenty of good spots around WP. usually clearer waters and bigger squid too

      Yeah you can use straight through mono, but most would prefer using braid than a fluro leader. once you start catching this way you will see why. Braid is thinner and you feel the bites and have more control. Just takes some time getting used to setting up that way.
