Thank you for this. In all the years I’ve been bringing this up to my husband’s orthopedic doctors, not one of them identified this gait, tested for it and offered treatment for it.
Wow, I was curious about this condition. I don't have it but have seen many folks waddle and wondered why they do it. Now I know, very useful information.
Different people do it for different reasons. I do it because I have chronic tendonitis in my knees. Both knees hurt, but in different ways. Dear Bob and Brad, I am 48 and I waddle a whole lot when walking because of some excruciating left hip pain. My osteopath gave me some exercises to do and I am doing them and it is getting better, but I went on a vacation last week and felt so embarrassed walking around the resort with the waddle. People would ask me: "Oh, you have a leg problem, need help?"... I felt like I was 100 years old. I have been home during the whole pandemic and never noticed I had this waddle before or it wasn't as pronounced. I will now try your exercises and hopefully get some strength back in my hip joint and try to stop this waddle. Thank you!!
I LOVE your videos and exercises! Trouble is I watch more than I actually exercise. 🤦🏾♀️ But it's a new year and I want to do better. I recently got cameras outside of my house and I now noticed how much I waddle with age, a LTKR, and a sore hip with bursitis. I hate the way it looks! I NEEDED this video for sure!
Thank you. I was starting to have pain on both sides whenever I get up from sitting. I usually walk like that for a few minutes until I works itself out.
See if there's a discrepancy in your leg 🦵 lengths. I had joint replacements and a PODIATRIST ( not the orthopedic not the surgeons nor radiologists)!!!! I made a " cookie" in my shoe on the heel of the shorter side and it worked, but l still need exercises.
Walking sideways up and down the hallway works for us old people. Even the cris cross steps tha Brad showed us before. Having the walls there gives us a sense of security, and a pace to grab if needed.
Very good! Lie is an intransitive verb and does not take an object, for example: Please lie down, yesterday you lay down, and you have lain down many times before. You guys are great thanks for sharing this info. Best wishes to both of you. Helping so many people who can't afford physio or need a refresh. Cheers heart
the stroke jacked my walking pattern immediately. people kept asking me if one leg was longer than the other. no, i walked normal 2 days ago, or whatever. it's the stroke. nobody listened. i was a long distance hiker over uneven terrain. my walk was fine. no weakness. thank you for these exercises. i will try for sure!
My PT told me one glute medius was weaker after injury. I am a regular exerciser so added extra reps with 5lb weight until that side SEEMED as strong as the other. I thought waddling was related to my ear problem. If she had told me I'd waddle like an old lady it would have motivated me to continue till the waddling stopped!
thank you thank you thank you! I am going through PT right now. Minimal exercises with decompression table and anti gravity treadmill. I have DDD, spinal stenosis the whole gambit, 64 years old. Have had problems for years, and now it is really delivering to my body. I will watch you videos and use some of your exercises. Again thank you and thank you for the light heartedness!
@@SwimminWitDaFishies it is a treadmill where you are enclosed from the waist down in a type of suit zipped to you waist. You get on it, it weighs you then air is blown into the suit. When the air is in the suit it takes some weight off of your spine, they put enough air in the suit for me that reduces 50 percent of my weight off my lumbar. Then I walk for 15 minutes. After the decompression table it helps to stabilize you back after being stretched. Feel light as air afterwards for about 5 minutes, then your normal walking puts the weight back on the lumbar different but it really helps after being stretched to ease the back so you don’t hurt so bad
I shattered my left distal femur, a 10 month recovery and bone growth stimulator finally healed. I have waddle to the left. Still trying to have confidence and return to a normal stride. Appreciate any suggestions. I am 60 years young. Love you guys.❤
So, what can someone do if they have a problem with one of their feet and it causes the Trendelenburg gait? Would you please go into MORE help videos for foot problems? Thanks 🙏
I work at a gym and we have a lot of older clients. I see a lot of these older people who waddle pretty severely on both sides. Interesting that I really started paying attention to this just a few days ago.
Since I been walking horrible, I noticed people all the time, how they walk ( gait ). It was sad, watching a lady walk and she was really walking side to side, it was bad. I don't know if the people realize they've a Gait problem.
Love these exercisess especially the the side steps snd band. I combined this with a row. Can you do a video about how to walk with good upright posture?
I have that awful waddle. Where can I buy those same resistance bands with the handles you are using. I feel so ashamed of the way I walk. Thanks for posting this video. Now I finally understand what is causing me to walk the way I do.
I walk in the house, and have noticed that I favor one side, so I'm going to try this.

I see you do sidestep with a band, that is good for that extra, but if folk just start to train after a long time of inactivity then "hands on the hip, side step to the left and bak to the right and repeat" can also work well before you start with a band. It is the same but you just start to make the muscle more used to that move before you use the bands.
I been doing these exercises for the last 2 1/2 years and I'm still in the same situation . I am still in the same situation , with Trendelenburg Gait.
Hey guys. My ex-wife (she's 72 yrs old now) waddles quite a bit not only on one side but both sides. It's like she swings from one side to the other every time she takes a step. When we were younger, I don't remember her walking that way at all. I see her and talk to her every now and then. I'm assuming she realizes it, but if I ever told her to watch your channel, I would probably get a mouth full and maybe get clobbered too. :)
I was diagnosed with Trendelenburg in September of 2019. I was in therapy for a bilateral knee replacement. I was doing the exercises you showed plus extras. The limp was not going away and there was more pain in the hip and back. I had xrays taken of the hip. They discovered Scoliosis. They ramped up the therapy to eliminate the limp. It didn't get better and in the meantime I had an ablation on my back. Two weeks later I had an episode of severe pain which paralyzed my leg. The pain lasted 3 days. Then bruising on my upper leg. This happened 3 more times and I ended up in the ER. After 7 tubes of blood, 2 ultra sounds, X-rays, 2 more exams and finally an MRI, they found the problem. I have several tears in the abductor muscle, the gluteus minimus is torn off the hip and torn almost completely in half. The gluteus minimus also has several tears in it. My other leg also has several tears in the tendons and muscle. I can choose to have surgery with 3 months of rehab in a body brace and mostly bed rest. However I have to see an Endocrinologist first. There seems to be a metabolic issue. I had a shoulder replacement last year also. I am missing 4 tendons by the inside of my right ankle and now wear braces. I also have no ACL in my left leg and the one in the right leg is almost completely deteriorated. Is this something you have experienced in your years of therapy? I am on the fence about surgery because I am on Medicare and they won't pay for this. I don't want to burden my husband with having to take care of me during that 3 month period. I was told that absolutely no pressure on that leg for 3 months! I would be curious as to your thoughts. Thanks
You are worth taking care of, my friend. Every time you go into the hospital, request a visit from the hospital’s social worker. Then you can make sure you go home with all the services you need. Also, see if you can get a personal care attendant - it’s covered by insurance, or by a Medicaid, or by a state program for disabled or elderly people. The attendant can provide care after your surgery. I am sorry for what you have been through and I hope you have better days ahead of you!
@@debbiec4407 Sorry it has taken me so long to reply, I was out of state for a family funeral. The surgeon said it has been happening for some time. We do not know why it happened. I was seen by an endocrinologist last week and several labs were ordered along with a bone scan today. They are searching for some metabolic issue that may be happening with me. I will see him again this friday for the results. I am sure your replacements will be fine. This is all an unusual situation.
YES, the scoliosis! I have had it for decades now and the dip on one side of my waist is much worse now. That's the sad part about scoliosis. You can't do anything about it but accept and live with it. I have the spinal stenosis as well. Believe me, I can feel you.
I actually feel better when I do let myself waddle a little. Both sides. I've had hip pain for many years and found that forcing myself to walk straight was causing pain. Relaxing a little and allowing my gate to look imperfect was actually a huge relief to me. My actual hip joints are unstable, so I think I was creating micro tears by forcing them not to move as much. With a slight wabble to both sides I seem to be mostly okay.
Mine came from trauma induced scoliosis from a car wreck … I do a lot of resting with my legs elevated to help with the pain. Custom arches and a heel lift work as well as they can for my leg length difference while I am walking …
@@lisarice4402 I'm sorry that you hurt, too. Hugs. I also have scoliosis. And I also spend most of my time with my legs elevated with a heating pad under my back to help with the pain. Standing in one place is excruciating to my low back, so I avoid it. At least my hips don't hurt anymore, though, now that I allow the slight wobble. I feel better not taking as long of strides, too. Looking perfect is overrated if it causes more pain. 🤗
I’m not looking perfect. My leg length difference is an inch, with my left leg being shorter than the right one, because of the damage done to my back. I have to use these just to be able to grocery shop and handle small tasks outside my residence. I cannot sit in one of those motorized carts because of the damage that was done to my pelvis. I assure you, nothing I am having to do is cosmetic - it is out of sheer need. My right hip is also wanting to “roll” out from underneath me a lot of the time, so I am extremely cautious when walking anywhere that doesn’t have, or allow cart usage. I do whatever I can to avoid falling, because I know that’s an unaffordable lengthy hospital stay, even with Medicare supplemental. Every step I take is measured so as not to fall. Thank you for your concern.
@@lisarice4402 Oh, I wasn't meaning it that way at all. I didn't feel in the slightest that you are doing any of what you do for cosmetic reasons. I was saying that it is okay if we don't walk quite like everyone else. I used to be concerned about walking pretty myself but gave up on that in favor of less pain. I was saying that it's okay to accept ourselves as we are, different walk and all. I didn't mean that I thought that you were trying to hide your injuries or anything. I assumed that you do what you do to try to help your injured body function better, not to change how you look. I meant that as encouragement to both of us to love ourselves even if we don't look like everyone else anymore. I'm so sorry that you suffer so much. I suffer a lot, too, but even I don't suffer as much as you do. I would never say anything mean to a fellow person in pain. Hugs.
I apologize for the way that came out - I also have a severe brain injury and everything that I say seems to come out as extremely blunt when it’s not meant that way. Lol I gave up “walking pretty” because it is too hard on my back … I think we both know what constant pain is all about. I wish for all of us going through constant pain days of way lesser degrees of pain - we definitely deserve that!! Hugs 🫂
Sometimes I’ll put the video on in my phone and set it to record... then I put it in my back left pocket looking backwards as I’m walking forwards to go get my mail. I’ve noticed it looks like I’m limping it with the way the cameras moving and the sound my gait. I do have nerve damage from a severe chronic rare disease called CIDP: chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy. I’ll have to try the exercises you had in the video and see if it improves my walk.
I like the long videos but could you do edited ones with all the tips condensed into short ones where we could do PT along with the vid for certain conditions
I LIKE hearing them talk, they’re good natured guys who get along well. I think people need to see more examples of harmonious relationships, as opposed to what’s going on in our country (USA) these days
I just assumed it was because I have one leg shorter than the other. If I sit for any length of time I tend to waddle when I first get up. I go a few steps and straighten out.
@@BobandBrad Thank you! Getting stronger and still doing physio. Every little bit helps! I am only 36 but this recovery has been crazy. I have had Avascular Necrosis for years and also just had a baby 3 months prior to surgery.
Could you give me some advice. I had a traumatic wreck . Busted pelvis, hip, femur, and ankle. Now I noticed that my hip and pelvis where the femur rod also sort of meets together sound like a crushing water bottle. It's a nauseating sound . My PT said that sometimes these sounds are due to different ligaments and muscles not fully formed and will lessen over time most likely . Have you ever heard of this ? Thanks ! Love your videos Def make sure those cavities are staying healthy ! Bless both of you . Brittinay
Thank You B & B, you guys Rock! This video reminds me of my recent diagnosis of a leg length discrepancy. The first measurement taken by a pt was a half inch discrepancy. For some reason, she was unsure of the measurement so she called for a tech in prosthetics to do another one. For her measurements, she used a tape while I layed on my side. Then he used an appliance while I was standing that is like a level. His measurement came to an eighth of an inch. My feeling is that he was dismissing my complaint and suggested up to an eighth is normal. I understand that our bodies are not exactly symmetrical and would really like a third 'objective opinion'. What do you think?
Hi Darlene -- I can't answer your question, but I wanted to say that my sister had a leg length discrepancy due to a badly broken leg when she was a child. She recently underwent a successful leg-lengthening procedure. It's major surgery and the recovery period was long and painful, but she's very happy with the result.
My husband wore an orthotic in the shorter leg for years until a rolfer told him his pelvis was crooked. Took out the orthotic and worked on strengthening hips until legs measured evenly. Orthotic was the first thing that took away back pain and rolfing and exercise kept it away
Thank you, I am weak on my right side. If I lay on my left side and try to lift my right leg as you demonstrated I can hardly lift it at all. I will try a couple other exercises and see if it helps. I feel like I look silly when I walk that way. I am quite obese so I hope this will help. Thank you.
Hi Bob and BradI have a question for you In supine lying while you flex your knee the foot is getting externally rotated automatically due to? Could you please tell me or make a video about this problem and what exercise will help to rectify this problem. Thank you
I find that I do that because of obesity/osteoarthritis in both knees. I'm waddling and leaning because I don't want to bend my knees. Will this work for me?
Hi guys, so love your input. Please give us some names and brands and sources. Thank you. One of your big ole fans 😂❤
My 77-year-old husband gait is way off -He has CMT (super high arches, two hammertoes, neuropathy from knees down and osteoarthritis in one knee,).His neurologist says nothing (short of surgery (which my husband is avoiding) I would love to know your opinion of what might be done from a PT basis. PT is always my first option of choice along with the highest quality of shows and orthodotics - llof which we have utilized.
I have a suggestion. You could put chapters in your videos because it makes it easier for viewers to skip to the parts they want to be and dont have to listen to the intro if they dont want to while the intro still being there
I think that makes sense (one leg shorter), so it was the first thing I had checked, but I am about as even as you can get. Turned out I have weak hips, and I am in physical therapy.
Im 52... I Had hip replacement 1 mo ago.l and have a Severe limp after 6 years of using a cane and walker. Due to my weight they wouldnt do my hip replacement until i lost enough finally. Im Doing Physical therapy but dont see much change, YET. Need some encouragement!
I been doing PT for the last 2 1/2 years ( off and on ) and believe me , it hasn't helped me at all. I hope the best for you . What we need is a person who will go out of their way to help even more. And it's hard to found anyone , if you don' t know where to look . 100% serious here. I get to wonder if Trendelenburg Gait can be fixed or not !!!!
Say, guys. Do you have a video on reviving body-wide muscles after more than a decade of best rest. I have a good day after I do some exercises then I suffer in pain a day or two after. It is not like I am overdoing it at all...trust me I know better than to do that. I know I can get back at least walking
I fell and put several cracks in my femur. My left leg is shorter than my right. Have been dismissed from PT and am continuing exercises at home. Still have slight limp. My sis thinks my heel lifts are off. My physical therapist was wonderful giving me the exercises you modeled. Who do I see to determine my next step.
They will never give direct advice. If your doctor can't or won't refer you to a new PT you may need a new Dr. A company called Good Feet can make custom orthotics for you but you have to go in person. Finding the right shoes can make a big difference.
I've had double hip replacement first one January 20th 2nd April 7th year 2022 I did more on my right side. I walk with a cane and when I got the cane in the right hand I slightly dip on the left side. Where are you guys located.
Not a PT here, but yrs ago as phys ed major/lots of sports for some decades; did alot of what we called in old days, "stretching/strenthening"...I havs used ankle wgts. and in my opinion that would work very nicely as long as you start very slowly (if you have not maintained some overall strength) with no wgts at all at first, and gradually introducing wgts of low amt. (I would also say to always work both sides, with the same wgt amts.) You will have to find the steps of increase for yourself, of course, being gentle to yourself and go slowly, small increments. Also, I would suggest doing no more than 3X/wk. Low wgt with increasing reps (start with even 5, very low wgt, up to 10) will be best at the beginning. I think a little soreness can be expected but it should not be too noticeable or debilitating and that is why you should have a day in between of rest. Also, there may be some good books (I go for used ones and even older written) that will be helpful.Keep a chart of your workouts - it's fun to see your progress over time, and how much more "bounce you have in your step"!
Sometimes it's a slight size difference in length of legs!!!! There's someone u can put into shoe on the heel n it lifts slightly...did it for me. Also had hip replacement and knee so that could be the problem!
This is what I have from a pelvis and hip multiple fracture etc it’s really annoying I just want to walk straight again. No motivation to do my exercises because I don’t think I will get better. I just hope it can be fixed. My superior glutious nerve was damaged or severed hoping it gets better 😔
I mentioned in one of your videos that I messed up one ear and when GuideWell was fixing boo boo, they also ‘cleaned out’ the good ear. I wobbled, held on…not terrible but not good. The nurse, John flushed out a pinkie-size piece of wax… resembled a dead. I want him in the next 20 I don’t love them. I don’t. I won’t. I do see people with this problem. But I also noticed some people really unsteady and I suggest go get your ears cleaned out before you get into the heavy stuff because it might be something deep deep deeply deep…thx
I’ve lost all strength in my right leg because of nerve pain on the front outside right thigh just above my knee. This is hard for me because I’m right handed and my right leg was my strongest. So now if I end up on the ground I can’t get up.
I ordered the straps, 2 of my legs don’t fit! All my weight in from my waist down. Bad knees one replaced other needs to be my left leg is weak. Have lower back trouble on that side

What helped you to walk normal again? I'm 1 mo post op hip replacement and discouraged . Been using cane and walker for 6 years
Do a show on stopping my Penguin gait due to low back pain please
Sorry you have low back pain.
@@MelB868 thanks so much...it’s ferocious.
I am just recovering from Sciatic nerve injury and I am now waddling when I walk because my leg can’t hold my weight now. So glad I found this video
Thank you!!
Did you have any st stiffness aches pains in your knees hips legs calf's
I LOVE your videos and exercises! Trouble is I watch more than I actually exercise. 🤦🏾♀️ But it's a new year and I want to do better. I recently got cameras outside of my house and I now noticed how much I waddle with age, a LTKR, and a sore hip with bursitis. I hate the way it looks! I NEEDED this video for sure!
Funny how these guys unironically became the most famous physical therapists on the internet
It is THEIR opinion...and it could come with liability if tested.
Thank you, Bob and Brad. You two are more professional than my physical therapist.
Thank you. I was starting to have pain on both sides whenever I get up from sitting. I usually walk like that for a few minutes until I works itself out.
I waddle when I walk and for me it’s been so embarrassing I just didn’t know why. Thanks for sharing now I can do something to change it.
Is it good now
@@janicejacome what’s a cookie?
Walking sideways up and down the hallway works for us old people. Even the cris cross steps tha Brad showed us before. Having the walls there gives us a sense of security, and a pace to grab if needed.
I HAVE DONE SOME OF YOUR STEPS AND I FEEL IT IS HELPING, STILL 88 YRS YOUNG
Very good!

Please lie down, yesterday you lay down, and you have lain down many times before.

You guys are great thanks for sharing this info. Best wishes to both of you. Helping so many people who can't afford physio or need a refresh. Cheers heart
I tell people all the time how much help Bob & Brad are. Thank you so very much. 😊
the stroke jacked my walking pattern immediately. people kept asking me if one leg was longer than the other. no, i walked normal 2 days ago, or whatever. it's the stroke. nobody listened. i was a long distance hiker over uneven terrain. my walk was fine. no weakness. thank you for these exercises. i will try for sure!
Greetings gentlemen, thank you so much ! I really need these exercises, my balance is off terribly!
What's an anti-gravity treadmill? Sounds like something that would be in outer space!
Learning to walk again after trimalleolar ankle break. These are very helpful tips. Thank you 😊
I shattered my left distal femur, a 10 month recovery and bone growth stimulator finally healed.
Thanks 🙏
Thank you for explaining the cause of the waddle gait and showing the exercises to strengthen the gluteus medius. 💖👍
You're so welcome!
Thank you. I've already improved massively just on the first try.
I work at a gym and we have a lot of older clients. I see a lot of these older people who waddle pretty severely on both sides. Interesting that I really started paying attention to this just a few days ago.
Waddling gait can also be attributed to osteomalacia with significantly low vitamin D levels.
@@meg2042 It's very painful.
Developed waddlewalk at 80..due to loss of balance..Plus sciatica Stabilizing stance..Definately try these exercises..
I have that awful waddle. Where can I buy those same resistance bands with the handles you are using. I feel so ashamed of the way I walk. Thanks for posting this video. Now I finally understand what is causing me to walk the way I do.
I hope this will help. Thank you for all the great information.
If one waddled both directions, I assume that strengthening both sides is the prescription.
This is more of a reason for you to help her . At least be her coach a shoulder to lean on .
You have to be patient with her .
This is great information that I can use. I had a “IM pinning” done on my right hip and it has been weak ever since. Thank you!
Have you been able to fix? I also had the hip screw
That gait has always terrified me, but I've been losing the battle lately with increased knee pain and loss of stamina. Thank you
You're so welcome! Brad
Another cause might be a shorter leg. That was my problem in addition to scoliosis and spinal stenosis.
Yes
YES, the scoliosis! I have had it for decades now and the dip on one side of my waist is much worse now. That's the sad part about scoliosis. You can't do anything about it but accept and live with it. I have the spinal stenosis as well. Believe me, I can feel you.
Sorry you have all that
I actually feel better when I do let myself waddle a little.
I'm 61 and walk like Fred Sanford. The thing is in real life the actor that playef Fred walked normally but I don't.
I like the long videos but could you do edited ones with all the tips condensed into short ones where we could do PT along with the vid for certain conditions
Agree, get to the point(s).
I've always wondered what causes people to waddle...but mostly I see it waddling on Both sides!
Best words “ you can do this” thank you guys. I’m going to do it!!!!

Now I noticed that my hip and pelvis where the femur rod also sort of meets together sound like a crushing water bottle. It's a nauseating sound .
I've been trying these in the pooI the water helps my balance as I have a knee injury.
Thank you, I am weak on my right side. If I lay on my left side and try to lift my right leg as you demonstrated I can hardly lift it at all.
I will try a couple other exercises and see if it helps. I feel like I look silly when I walk that way. I am quite obese so I hope this will help. Thank you.
I also like those bands you using too!
Hi Bob and BradI have a question for you
In supine lying while you flex your knee the foot is getting externally rotated automatically due to? Could you please tell me or make a video about this problem and what exercise will help to rectify this problem. Thank you
I find that I do that because of obesity/osteoarthritis in both knees. I'm waddling and leaning because I don't want to bend my knees. Will this work for me?
Wondering same thing
You both r great sir . God bless
How can it be weak on the opposite side I have hip dysplasia so I have this dip on the effected side I would say its the same side as the problem

My walker doesn’t go sideways well….nor does my leg want to lift! I’ll go back to trying the leg lift. Great video.
I have a suggestion. You could put chapters in your videos because it makes it easier for viewers to skip to the parts they want to be and dont have to listen to the intro if they dont want to while the intro still being there
Great idea! I hope they see your comment. It's actually very easy to do.
can this be apart of hip tilt and one leg being shorter than the other
I think that makes sense (one leg shorter), so it was the first thing I had checked, but I am about as even as you can get. Turned out I have weak hips, and I am in physical therapy.

Say, guys. Do you have a video on reviving body-wide muscles after more than a decade of best rest. I have a good day after I do some exercises then I suffer in pain a day or two after. It is not like I am overdoing it at all...trust me I know better than to do that.

Hi guys avid watcher. Great info will be sharing. And thank you once again
I have that from IT band syndrome. How is it that the opposite side of the dropped hip side is the culprit?
Needed to see that quote today.
I've had double hip replacement first one January 20th 2nd April 7th year 2022 I did more on my right side. I walk with a cane and when I got the cane in the right hand I slightly dip on the left side. Where are you guys located.
Can you use ankle weights and do standing side leg lifts to achieve the same results? Thank you.
Great stuff guys thanks
This is what I have from a pelvis and hip multiple fracture etc it’s really annoying I just want to walk straight again. No motivation to do my exercises because I don’t think I will get better. I just hope it can be fixed. My superior glutious nerve was damaged or severed hoping it gets better 😔
Would The Scoop, the lateral movement machine, help with this if you have access to one?
I mentioned in one of your videos that I messed up one ear and when GuideWell was fixing boo boo, they also ‘cleaned out’ the good ear. I wobbled, held on…not terrible but not good. The nurse, John flushed out a pinkie-size piece of wax… resembled a dead. I want him in the next 20 I don’t love them. I don’t. I won’t. I do see people with this problem. But I also noticed some people really unsteady and I suggest go get your ears cleaned out before you get into the heavy stuff because it might be something deep deep deeply deep…thx
My left side it’s the side who drop and I think it’s the weak side? Is that right?
Great Feedback ❤❤
You guys have an opinion you would share on the efficacy of spinal decompression?
I’ve lost all strength in my right leg because of nerve pain on the front outside right thigh just above my knee. This is hard for me because I’m right handed and my right leg was my strongest. So now if I end up on the ground I can’t get up.
I’m sorry karen is there anything the doctors can do
