Wanted to get this reaction edited and uploaded right before I go to bed as it's litreally 1AM. Hope you enjoy the video and as always, you're welcome to comment on your thoughts and interpretations of the MV, these opinions are just mine :)
Okay, here is my theory on the story line. Rie and JunJi get into a fight because Rie doesn't want to take their relationship public. JunJi leaves and Rie is upset and thinking back to all of the memories they have together. They both end up back at the pool where they shared their first kiss (symbolism of the relationship being hidden by being underwater). Rie is thinking about that and smiling before he sees JunJi come out of the water. They are both surprised to see each other. They go to the cafe to talk. They make up and both agree to go public (symbolized by JunJi reaching for Rie's hand (in contrast to him throwing Rie's hand away during the fight) and the kiss). This makes sense in my mind because the cafe scene and the first pool scene we see are connected because Rie is wearing the same sweater in both. I could be totally wrong but I don't see the song itself as a heartbreak/lost love song.
This is how I see it too especially because the couples are made to follow, from not being sure how they feel, to being in love, then fear from judgement in face of Rie. We get rid of the fear but have to face the world with what happens to Mill and Nine
I mean how many times can you say "Call Me By Your Name" without drawing comparisons. I never read the book, but the movie Call Me By Your Name has some really lovely themes around self acceptance, love, relationships that aren't easy, relationships that end with a lot of emotion involved, growth, coming of age. If I remember it right, that story was a secret summer fling with two young men that had a deadline as one person was leaving at the end of summer. It was about first love, coming to terms with yourself, a sprinkle of religious shame, and really about the vulnerability and the two people uplifting eachother as they find themselves. The relationship ended but they learned through it, and grew from it. Here it feels like this relationship burned bright and fast from the kissing in the pool scene as a starting point to the relationship itself, all these beautiful private moments, but it burned out because Rie wanted to stay safe, but Junji was ready to be more open. All these moments of them together are flashing through Rie's mind as he reminisces by the pool where it started, and he's surprised by Junji coming out of the water. They go for coffee (the coffee place being where it really began in Junji's MV when he chased him down the street) and Junji reaches out to begin again with a more open Rie. Then the continuing paper crane theme. I know from previous MV googling the cranes are symbolic of dedication, care, well wishes, longevity etc. Historically the idea was folding 1000 paper cranes would mean your wish would come true/you'd be healthy/have a long life, and people would do this as a well wish for others too, say if someone was sick. But I've see it as an act of devotion in love too, like the time itself to do all of it is a symbol of your care and love for the person they are for. So them making them together is an act of love, and Junji stepping on them is basically destroying their love for eachother. It just so nicely done. After the other MVs I looked into what the phone booth could mean as well, and it gave me some uses of it in other media. It can be a symbol of loneliness, reaching out to contact someone while also separating yourself from them, or hesitating and not actually making that call, being afraid to reach out, being within reach of someone but separated. It's used in other kpop MVs too when you keep an eye out. Good Boy Gone Bad by TXT (I see it as a symbol of a broken relationship and being abandoned there), and it's popped up a few times in BTS's storyline (phone booth chained shut, and or with writing on it keeping with the theme). Anyway this concludes my essay. 😅Agh I just love this whole series so much.
The end of the MV ... I took as them being at a public pool, even though they are alone. Them going under the water to kiss symbolizing that they're teetering on a line with being secretive. Kind of like kissing in a glass house. I like the visual representation of it as if they're taking steps outside of their private space.
Out of all the reactionary's (?) on YT, especially when it comes to this series/concept from OnlyOneOf, yours is the one I looked forward to the most. Plus, we still have two more to look forward to! As much as we applaud the artist for taking such a daring leap, we should acknowledge all the people behind him for supporting this endeavour. South Korea is a very conservative society. The fact that the members of OnlyOneOf were able to do live performances of LibidO (another video I implore you to react to) on music shows speaks volumes. They also do their own take on a very popular girl group song Dolphin by Oh My Girl. Watch the original first and then watch the version that OnlyOneOf does. I think you'll be at a loss for words. Thank you as always for your thoughtful words. 😄
I am haunted by the fact that in the second scene in the pool rie also undresses, but before that in all the scenes only junji was undressed. it seems to me that this nudity is literally frankness and the second scene in the pool symbolizes that rie also decided to be frank with junji
I love the amount of depth that they gave to all these solos. It feels so different from anything else I've seen before. I also love how you truly pay attention to all the details and make the message justice
Thank you, Daniel, for this reaction to a very beautiful MV. I find your interpretation very thoughtful and revealing. Until this, I totally didn't get the origami box representing limit of the protagonist's patience to hold off on declaring love. I hope you can react to Holland's I'm Not Afraid and offer us your interpretation.
the song, the lyrics, the mv, their acting, the storyline everything about it is just so beautiful...thank you for reacting to them... your interpretations are always so good
I know Im late but just wanted to comment that the sunset thing is because they were filming at that time and it was taking a lot of time to film that part.
I am very agree your opinion!And I think the sense they kiss in the shop(the end of Junji‘s MV and the start of Rie’s MV) maybe is the ending of their story,Rie finally agree take their relationship public,even he feel a little bit afraid.because that sense is the only one sense they make out(kiss) on public place.
Uff I always need your deep downs on this videos cause I'm only so smart 🥲 also it's so cool how you also take fans' opinions to complete the pictures. Thank you so much!! I love OOO, I'm in love with this series and I really really like your reactions, so this is a match made in heaben for me 💖
Craxy dropped a teaser for 'Poison Rose' to be released on Halloween and I feel compelled to tell as many people as possible to check it out immediately 👍
its been a year now since u put out this video but I wanted to add something - I think out of all the couples' stories (kb x yoojung, rie x junji, mill x nine) from the underground idol series, rie and junji's relationship seems to not have a happy ending, and looking at the lyrics of junji's song be mine I don't think its a healthy relationship either. specifically these lyrics 'allow me to sculpt you, however, I want', and 'hurry burn it, get yourself out of this wall now, come toward me faster' sounds like junji is trying to change rie and make him fit how he sees rie and what his idea of rie is in his mind - 'inspire me, i already know all about you' rather than letting rie be his own person and take things at his own pace. and in ries because mv, theres 2 scenes of them at the pool - the first one seems to be happening on the same day they were at the cafe, and only junji gets undressed, the second one being when they both undress and kiss underwater. but then rie gets out of the water and is looking far in another direction. these shots are shown after the scenes of rie crying and reminiscing the good moments of their relationship. i think, that this 2nd scene of junrie in the pool isnt actually real, its what rie wishes couldve happened; a fantasy/dream, like he came outside to the pool which coudlve been where they went somewhere more public for the first time (maybe it coudlve even been their first date?) after he and junji had an argument and junji threw the paper cranes, to look back on what they had and what couldve been. and that they couldve shared one more moment, with the underwater kiss.
Ahh I‘m so happy you reacted to this already 🥰 Honestly I think it‘s really easy to just not talk about the song itself when the message is just this important so i‘m saying this first: The song has been stuck in my head ever since it came out,it‘s really nice (Begin is still my fave from this project🥹) Now your theory as you mentioned is also the widely accepted theory which ok I get it. A lot of it makes sense but personally I just really don‘t like this ’trope' that happens in a lot of queer media. I think you have to be really careful with the „I can‘t be with you if you‘re not out“ type of thing (but that‘s just general criticism, i don’t wanna get too far off topic🥲) Anyways I would like to believe, as sad as it is, that the relationship just had its problems and it was a „right person, wrong time“ kinda situation. This might be a bit too specific, but it reminded me of „to my star 2“ and Jiwoo‘s complicated feelings towards their relationship Also I‘ve seen a lot of people discussing the chronological order of this song. Sone said the beginning is actually the end and it‘s Junji apologizing to Rie which I find interesting too. And someone pointed out that Rie wears the same sweater at the beginning in the café and at the end in the pool scene (which seems unlikely to be a coincidence) so that would mean it happened at the same day🤔 Maybe the behind the scenes videos will clear things up While begin and be free were clearly structured, the last two left a lot of room for interpretations so I‘m really curious what will happen with our last two members 👀

I love hearing your breakdown of these!
thank you for your reaction 🥺
i agree that maybe junji is tired with this stage of relationship as rie doesn't want to commit. he's scared to take another step so they end it ;.;
