EXO was one of the biggest risks of the SM company because at that time when big groups like Big Bang, Super Junior and 2NE1 were active, SM introduced EXO with a new group with a completely different style as the first group of the 3rd generation of Kpop. EXO became very famous not only because of being in the SM company, but also because of the new style and brilliant talents they have in the group, EXO was a group that showed their vocal power in the first year of their activity, that kpop had never seen from a new group, until Growl was released, Growl became the biggest song of that time, so that all people of different ages liked this song and knowing and even a famous saying became trending that anyone who does not know Growl must be a South Korean spy. Growl still has the biggest impact in Korea and no song has ever reached this level of popularity. In fact, Exo among the old famous idols has reached such a level of popularity that It seemed impossible to pass such big groups, but EXO did it. EXO entered China and Asia quickly, in fact, They opened the door for K-pop to enter Asia, especially in China . an interesting fact was published by one of the official Chinese magazines that EXO's fandom in China is bigger than the Chinese army, in my opinion as an old Kpoper, EXO's popularity Asia was and still is an unrepeatable thing, maybe there are more famous than them now, but they are definitely not more popular, EXO is a group that has been active since 2012 and is still breaking records and moving forward, but the SM company had serious problems with them, and due to the unfair behavior of the company and not giving them their rights, many of the members left the company and started their own company. but EXO is still going strong.

I think you were not paying attention to the part about Seo Taiji. He started EVERYTHING, and he had nothing to do with corporations, big labels, none of that. In fact, he dropped out when the money took over. But he was never forgotten, and is as popular today as he ever was. He officially crowned BTS as the heirs to his legacy in 2017.
Seo Taiji also went against norms, broke taboos, and infuriated older generations. His songs were frequently banned. The government wanted to censor his lyrics. So he released an album without any lyrics as a protest. Young people bought it and just sang along to the music (he made sure the words to the songs got leaked). He broke all sales records, and the government caved. They ended the practice of lyrics censorship because of him.
He criticized the government, helped reunite runaways with their families, drew attention to inhumane conditions at Korean schools. Sound familiar? That era ended with him, but a certain group we all love brought it back. This is why only BTS deserved his blessing. And he gave it to them by devoting a concert set of his greatest hits with the members on his 25th anniversary. They returned K-pop to its real roots as socially aware protest music that stirred up things.
If you want to see the best part of it just search for "Seo Taiji 25 Time:Traveler Classroom Idea". The song is about the inhumane conditions at Korean schools. But something else happened here at this show. Seo Taijii let SUGA add a new verse to the song. It was legendary.

News Flash: the capitalistic, market research, corporate machine is definitely happening in western music and western labels definitely take all of that into account before they sign new artists. The western music industry isn’t about art, it’s about numbers and money just like in Korea. You can call it inauthentic, but it’s a fact. However, there are many artists themselves both here and in Kpop whose whole purpose is the art and the music. These people audition for Korean entertainment companies because they love creating music: like RM, like Suga, like Bang Chan, Han, and Changbin from Stray Kids, Hongjoong from Ateez, Soyeon from (G)I-dle. All of these artists are authentically being creative in making music even if their companies are busy crunching numbers. G-Dragon from Big Bang just released a song called Power, where he calls out the haters who were quick to judge him when he was falsely accused of drug charges last year with the lyrics, “prove ‘em all wrong got all the receipts.” Would you call that inauthentic? That’s a great song by the way, highly recommend you check out the music video.

@The AfterParty Reacts, BTS is third generation they started in 2013 the group EXO debuted in 2012 they are considered third generation they debuted like 11 months before BTS debut.
BTS did not come from a large company such as JYP, SM, YG those were considered the big three K-pop agencies.
BIGHIT is still part of HYBE labels there are subsidiary they once started out as a small little bankrupt company. BTS actually saved their label and the fandom.ARMY also contributed a lot back in the day when they were disrespected and not allowed to go on shows to compete they did not get any recognition until 2015 when they actually won their competition K-pop show with the song “I need U”
BTS internationally did not become this phenomenon group until about 2017 2018 when they became more internationally known in the west such as United States, Europe, and Canada. They were breaking records BTS not just K-pop records or South Korean records. They were breaking western artist records, such as the Beatles, the Bee Gees, Michael Jackson, Elvis, Céline Dion, Adele, etc. and yes, these are actually Guinness Book of World Records especially RUclips records that they broke within the 24 hour period And even though they mentioned BLACKPINK breaking records, BTS were the first to break a RUclips record for their song in a 24 hour period over 100 million views!
David Kim and Danny Kim not related reacted and doing K-pop reactions and they expanded into more of Korean culture and they kind of went their separate ways and are doing their own thing right now and have their own podcast, etc.
but using BTS as a marketed factor and trying to beat BTS you’re going to fail because this is the reason why all the K-pop groups failed who are trying to compete against BTS. It is because BTS have already done it. You cannot improve on something that has already been done you have to come up with an original idea that will take off in the market that people will like and will go to the concerts and listen to that music by the physical album and other merch in order to do that you must be the first to do it. BTS were the first to do what they did it first!
Not to say that the other K-pop groups have not exploded in the United States and other western countries they have, but BTS was their first to actually make an impact in the western music industry!
So trying to monopolized the music market like BTS , you have to be BTS!
Stray kids are fourth generation and yes, they do look up to the third generation BTS the leader Bang Chan has mentioned BTS were the ones to pave the way. Paving the way doesn’t mean that you created it first as far as K-pop is concerned because BTS is third generation, but they were the first to actually succeed in the western market and actually make big money in the western music market. American music industry is number one worldwide, number two is Japan. Lotta people don’t know that and BTS marketed in Japan just like the other K-pop groups do because if you make it in Japan, you’re gonna make It in south east Asia because Japan hold the second title!
Second generations try to go into the Western market. They became what you call a splash in the pan, but they didn’t make an impact to stay and remain BTS did that! Big Bang, which is one of my favorite groups that I first started out in K-pop they tried to do that, but it didn’t last very long south east Asia was blowing up with Big Bang hits everywhere, not as much in the western Music charts. BTS were hitting number one billboard that no other K-pop group has ever done before hitting the number one spot, especially if it wasn’t in your language and you were trying to market it into the west that made it even more difficult but yet BTS did it they did it with five different songs. Yes granted two of them were English mixed with Korean and it was a collaboration with the song. “My universe“ which Chris Martin and Coldplay worked with BTS to make it a number one hit on the American billboard.!
BTS also was the very first to go to the American music awards and win three categories and the top category that surprised everybody was artist of the year and they’re not even from America!
This 20 minute quick history of K-pop I give it a B- because it was good intentions for David to do this, but he needs to redo it because so much has happened and it takes more than 20 minutes to really grasp the K-pop music culture.
You know, BTS will still be recognized and even in the political setting their songs are making a difference in South Korea the young people are coming out in droves. You may not know what’s going on politically in South Korea right now. They just impeached their president ! BTS ‘s song “FIRE”is the anthem for change. The young people are letting the older generation know we’re not gonna tolerate this and we have a voice and BTS are going to set it on fire.!!! 🔥
BTS may be the biggest group coming out of South Korea and making the biggest splash into the western market, but there are other groups that you should check out. I understand that BTS may be your go to, but I want people to know that BTS want other groups to be shown and explored!
BTS are humble people they are philanthropist and they donate millions and millions of dollars to many different charitable causes, but they are not pushing it in your face saying look at me. I’m donating so acknowledge me. No that’s not the type of people BTS are! they do it quietly and they try to do it without any media. It’s usually afterwards it is found out And BTS are not here to put any other K-pop groups down. They want K-pop to keep thriving. they want the other artist to be explored and recognized and they’re doing it right now in western countries United States ,Canada, the UK. Other K-pop groups getting noticed and so they in the billboard Awards.
ATEEZ, STRAY KIDS , EXO , Monsta X, NCT I recommend these boy groups. Maybe you have reacted to one or two of them but I listen to them even though I am a BTS STAN
Girl groups like, BLACKPINK, TWICE, (G) I-DLE, Aespa, IVE, Le SSERAFIM, XG and YOUNG POSSE . So it’s more than 40 groups we’re talking about hundreds and hundreds of K-pop boy and girl group and then you mentioned is there a mixed gender K-pop group? Yes, there is. I highly recommend KARD , they consist of two girls and two boys!
Kpop is breaking the music standards, everybody has heard of K-pop, no matter where you are. There’s always a K-pop song at TJ Maxx playing in the background other local establishments playing K-pop songs everywhere and yes, even being recognized to be played on the radio!
Guys please check out other groups too💜👍

I also recommend watching Seo Taeji with BTS at their 25th time traveler concert. To bring this full circle
There's only one group that I know of that is mixed gender, and that is Kard. I believe it is because a major factor of K-pop and idols is to make the fans love them and "want" the members. Having a mixed gender group could make fans jealous of the other members and if there was a dating "scandal" I feel some fans would tear down the group. Idols will go out of their way to not speak with other gender groups to prevent dating rumors. If a member was found out to be dating someone, it could hurt their career to the point they may have to leave the group (this actually just happened this year). Some companys also have a ban on members dating to prevent the idol from being "unavailable to fans love" amd bring down the group.
I personally do not agree with this and if a member I "liked" or am "biased" too found someone they loved, I would fully support it. I hate that is it looked down on and members get bullied or even fired for finding someone they love. They are in their late teens - thirties and are not supposed to ever date? No. There are many idols that date secretly and even some that come out as being married and have kids with out the fans knowing.

I like the discussion at the end, i think the thing about it that you cant compare the american music industry to south korean music industry is the american music has been global for the longest time time, thats the most listened and profitable music industry in the world, so theres no need for it to systematically expand unlike kpop which their language is not the most popular language, but thats not to say there are not a lot of things that are done inauthentic like a lot of group now will either always have an english song or will collab with international artist, i feel like with that for me people are losing what makes it kpop in the 1st place. and also about the superm things, i definitely see your point about the cash grabbing thing, i think sm just wanted to break into the international market any way posssible which they could have done if they were smarter but thats a topic for another day. but the relationship between groups, that one is very tricky to talk about because a lot of them do train together and bond from there and im very sure there are so many that probably their close friends are the one that got drop from the competition and most have probably trauma bonded 😂with each other to get close, like jin from bts said even if they consider each other as families, they still have to treat each other like co workers so that when fight occurs they can still act professionally, i definitely think thats how most group sees it and thats why most last very long apart from the contracts. For me i really like superm when it was announced because 3 of my favourite artist where going to be promoting together and it was nice to see the dynamic of people youll never thought to see together in a group but i didnt see it lasting long, because their group will be the priority and im glad the guys had fun with it. Super M was the dumbest idea. Taking the biggest stars from the most popular groups means a bunch of well established egos in the room fighting to take the spotlight. It won’t gel well as a group. They’re envisioning cooperation like “We Are The World” which was a single song endeavor for philanthropic purpose. Super M’a purpose was to beat BTS. All those egos want to be the front man of the group that beats BTS. They can’t do it because they will self-implode. And the irony is that BTS didn’t make music in order to dominate the market. Yes they had goals but not world domination. They just wanted to make good music that reach people. That’s why their music endures. There is a message in almost every song that’s not superficial. I can’t wait for June 2025.

The labels have a better chance of success by supporting and growing new groups organically. I’m not a Stay but I respect that they’ve grown organically and work hard to make good music. There are many groups undertaking a similar journey.

As when both groups were in korea exo was the more popular one. and exo was offered many western offers but sm rejected them. and then 2018 they started enlisting and bts moved global. thats why now only 3 members remain in sm. every other member left the company because they know their potential was harmed due to sm.so 9 out of 12 members left the company.

Also you need to dive more into Korean culture to understand the K-Pop phenomenon I think. You wouldn't have made some of your comments 🙂
