This song was originally inspired by a poem by Dan Sheahan about a country pub in Queensland Australia during WW2 after US servicemen drank it dry. The original song was written by Gordon Parsons, an Australian singer/ songwriter & was recorded by Slim Dusty in 1957. It became one of the biggest selling records in Australia at the time. I put this information out as, all too often, Americans' seem to automatically assume that all country music belongs to them. Yes, I agree that the song is 'pure country ' but it is typically Australian in both context & humour. Credit where credit is due please.😂
