I have to ask Robert - what is unique about tech jobs and medical professionals? Nothing. H1B is not a O-1 Visa, which is genius level. What is the point of going to MIT or Medical School in the USA if cheaper labor will undercut you? Its not about NO immigration ever, but if we are saying America First - is it America First as long as you are happy with $60K a year? Im not a critic, but I remember a 60 Minutes report from about 7 to 10 years ago that focused on the Medical professionals. Even claiming the corporations would hold their passports so they couldnt leave. If Elons a genius with exceptional knowledge and achievement, his Visa should have been an O-1. H1B was never about the best of the best. Is it that GenX through GenZ are not motivated? Public School became all about passing tests focused on certain material to get money for the school. It hasnt been about educating Americans since at least the late 80s to early 90s. Some states practice 'social promotion' where instead of holding students back a grade until they learn the material, they move on 'socially' and graduate high school functionally illiterate. I could see how H1B could be necessary until they fix Education - but they need to tell us that, and not just "Yeah, I do it too. I take advantage of it too."

Tech and medicine are also extremely vulnerable and exploitable failure points for a foreign power to monopolize.

    • @TeamICOS
      @TeamICOS 2 дня назад +11

I work in tech. It is 100% not about not having the skilled labor pool in the US. It is twofold. It is bad HR that cannot figure out how to hire for skilled tech positions. They hire based on diversity quotas or AI algorithms reading resumes. In general, tech focused people don't have the skillset to make really clean and pretty resumes, so they get ignored more often despite actually having the correct skillsets for the job. The second issue is bad management. The vast majority of people managers in the tech field are promoted for reasons other than being the best at getting their people set up to do their jobs. They are good at being deceitful about metrics to make it look like they are doing a better job than they are, or they are good at brown nosing their boss to make that person look good. While not inherently bad traits, they more often than not work counter to developing a skilled workforce. So, rather than have a constantly improving team that develops a better product, they have to reduce costs to show "improved efficiencies", which leads to needing to hiring "higher quality" staff at lower prices. So, they import labor that will work for lower money. There is also a large amount of exploitative labor. Because visas are tied to the employment, the employee is incentivized not to report violations. If you hire a "full time" position but then require that person to work 80+ hours a week, then technically they are working two jobs for half the salary.

@OhSnap-kb9vr I believe 60 Minutes did an episode on the medical profession. Basically the teaching hospitals and universities were given financial incentives for choosing foreign candidates to teach/train as doctors. So like 75% of doctors in a given group were from other countries. This is like telling Americans not to bother. Not unless they want to allow opening up more medical schools, which they've fought against in the past.

Aside from national security, another issue that hasn't been fleshed out properly is the impact it has on other countries.
Canada poaches a lot of doctors from other countries. That's to deal with our doctor shortage. Our doctor shortage (and yes, I'm gonna say it) is largely a gender issue.
Male or female, it costs the taxpayer the same to train a GP. The return on investment? Male doctors work more hours per day, per week, per year and per lifetime than female ones. They're also more willing to specialize.
My sister has extremely steady hands. Her sutures were always perfect. When she got her MD, they begged her to specialize in cosmetic or pediatric surgery. She was like, "by the time I'm finished training in a specialty, my biological clock will be jangling and I'll be taking a bunch of time off."
All but two of the doctors at my clinic are from Lebanese. Do you think health care is MORE accessible in Lebanon than it is in Canada? Does anyone think Lebanon has such a surplus of doctors that they're happy to invest in their training only to see them emigrate?
My husband's allergist is Nigerian. Same thing. Is Nigeria so overflowing with specialists that they can afford to train them and then just give them away?

Comment around 17 minutes is the reason I can’t totally accept Vivek’s initial statement. While yes our education system has major problems (that’s why I home school) there are far too many occasions where the natives are forced to train their foreign replacements, indicating they are more than capable to do the job.
The h1b salaries are also not reflective of the true market value, making it crystal clear this is about cheap labour not some spectacular talent (which I’m sure does still happen but are now the minority of h1b).
Furthermore, if the STEM education in America is so appalling, why do foreigners pay a premium to attend our universities to receive degrees in engineering, IT, etc., and then subsequently stay here after becoming employed?
Lastly, the rhetoric surrounding h1b would not have become so hostile if we didn’t have solid proof that the tech sector was deliberately discriminating against white males for the past decades (see James Damore, big tech censorship, etc)
This is personal, whites are being targeted for destruction, and like our forefathers, we aren’t going to sit back like pussies and let it happen without a fight.

The rules were….1) have a bank account there 2) have housing (which they said good luck on a Swede renting to a noncitizen) 3) have to have skills in jobs they needed filled (Nursing was one). 4) have to speak their native language (even though, for the most part, they speak English)

If there's no qualified American, you go with an H1B. The problem is, that's not what happens. At least not in Canada, where we have a similar system.
It took FOREVE for my husband to get his first engineering job, despite having earned the most versatile, and most challenging, engineering degree offered in Canada.
His cousin got a degree in civil engineering, and after nearly a year of not a single interview finally said "fuck it" and took a job pruning trees.
If you look at the job postings, what you'll see is the inevitable result of H1B abuse (and other foolish HR practices).
Thousands of inexperienced new Canadian graduates are competing for a handful of entry level jobs. THOSE jobs are going to H1Bs.
The postings for experienced engineers languish unfilled for months, often for more than a year. Because Canadian engineering grads were pruning trees instead of accumulating experience as engineers.
It's short term gain that will inevitably lead to long term pain.

The great majority of the H1-B software engineers could be replaced by smart, industrious, community colleges graduates.
I have been working as a software developer since before there was an H1-B visa. We used to have lots of musicians working in software.

Viva, you have a very American type spirit, despite having been born in Canada. You also have an intelligent voice. So we are happy to welcome you. But you are an exception. The plain fact of the matter is that the last 100 years or so of US immigration policy has led to egregious abuses, and subversions of the culture. A culture which you have expressed that you value highly. America needs a moratorium on these policies of immigration, because it has been abused. And the abuse drastically supersedes the benefits you continue to point out at this point.

Robert is referencing the first federal case in which the district judge in Alabama found in favor of a specific group. The big news occurred in the 5th circuit on December 6 when a district judge ruled the whole act of Congress unconstitutional. Emergency appeal by Garland to a 3 judge appeals court panel that ruled on December 23 that the previous decision was a stayed and the act was constitutional. Then, on December 27 the full appeals court overturned the 3 judge panel and stated it unconstitutional. In the meantime FinCen (BOI) website says you can voluntarily provide the information. This whole department and its database now with all of the private information they have collected needs to be e eliminated by Doge and the data destroyed (as much as you can destroy digital info- hahaha). The Trump DOJ needs to let this law lie dead in the water.

There's no woke right. It's a dumb phrase put forth by lefties who want to remain relevant to their lefty friends.

Woke right is the zionist right. How woke left treats lgbt & minorities- is how woke right treats jews. They are willing to censor speech
