    Your statistics are absolutely correct.
They persuade me to advocate prevention, also.
It takes a dedicated parent, to begin long term prevention, when your refraction is 0.0 diopters, or 20/20.
I was -8 Diopters myopic, like your husband.
My wife has 20/20, like you.
While I am devoted to prevention, I know that no one "wants it", when still at 20/20.
That is the most difficult "salesmanship" job you will ever have.
I agree with your husband because of the ATOM science.
Only long term Atropine can ever be effective, and only by you and because of your husband.
That message gets through to me, but no one else.
That is why I post your remarks on my site, and to my immediate relatives, for their children.
I also advocate that this type of prevention study be conducted at a 4 year college.

    Hi Dr. Rupa,
I know how skilled you are, and you trust your measurement accurately.
The problem, for me is basically this.
As an Electrical Engineer, knowing the same facts you have and believe, I absolutely must ersonally make the refractive measurements.
    myself.
I know you use a retina scope.
    That I do not have.
So I rely on my Snellen, and my own knowledge to measure my refractive state, as positive or negative - as a simplified scientific concept.
A person who does this, and goes from 20/40, to 20/20, or refractive state, from -0.75 D, to +0.25 D, will objectively believe this scientific result.
I have suggested that "trusting", an Engineer, could work, since I have done it myself.
Nothing succeeds, like a person who rises to the measurement challenge, and gets out of mild nearsightedness.
I am certain this will work, or at least a discussion of this should be offered to pilots entering a 4 year EE college.
This also is "off label", and must be understood that way.

    Hi Dr. Rupa Wong,
Since I am interested in doing what you are doing (life-time prevention) as a special request, could you supply some additional measurement details?
    1) Is that an auto-refractor you are using?
    2) What is the specific refractive status, you currently measure?
    +0.5 Diopters?
    3) Personally, to help my immediate relatives, I use a Snellen, and Trial Lenses.
    4) I would like more people to be offered this choice, before their refraction "becomes more negative", than -0.5 Diopters.
    5) Do you have any suggestions and advice, in how to get people motivated to do this.
    6) I totally agree with your "myopia trajectory", statement.
That is my complete "motivator ".
The sooner I get started, the better!
    Thank you!

Hi Otie - it's actually an optical biometer- it measures the axial length of the eye. This elongation is what causes eye health complications for myopic individuals. The machine also can use a predictive growth curve to assess what refractive error the child will hit at age 18 and what axial length. Those are powerful motivators. I saw that when I did this test on my daughter that we could avoid glasses completely if we started treatment with low dose atropine immediately. Otherwise, she was predicted to end up as a -1.50D myope. I think explaining to parents that there are real eye health complications from myopia, then it helps. Right now my daughter is still plus, but she's trending negative and we have halted that!

      @@DrRupaWong Hi Dr. Rupa,
      Thanks for your detailed reply.
I totally agree with you that "preventing accommodation", is the only true solution. Thanks! Otie

I came here because of Otie Brown. I use 1.50 diopters weaker glasses when using a computer or reading, otherwise my full prescription is for 20+ feet. I had to do this on my own by ordering glasses online because no optometrist ever taught me this trick to stop my eyesight from getting worse. I think if someone gets to -3 or -4 diopters they should be using weaker lenses for close-up activities. This is how a person can prevent Hyperopic Defocus which causes a lot strain on the eyes. People with 20/20 vision, who don't wear glasses, do not have this added strain. I hope the common practice for medical professionals will be to account for hyperopic defocus and recommend weaker lenses soon for the sake of preventing everyone's eyes from continuing to get worse beyond -3 or -4 diopters.

      Hi Ben,
I hope Dr. Rupa Wong responds to my questions.
These are the same questions I asked of Dr. Jake Raphaelson.

I wish my eye doctors offer that choice all they said was I needed glasses by age 11 but they didn’t offer any options so me and my parents didn’t know and just thought the issue is simple glasses is all I need but right now my vision is so bad and I think at this point it’s late I’m 23 years old 😭😭😭

A Special thanks to Dr. Rupa on Eye Length Measurements - for details on life-time prevention (of myopia) for your children.
I asked my immediate relatives to do this, (equivalent) during the school years.

You look like your daughter, or is it the other way around? Negative lenses cause myopia, or is it the other way around? What do you think?

In science, long term near creates mild nearsightedness.
Attempting to fix it, with a minus lens, only makes it far WORSE.
