Steve and those old Pearl fiberglass drums. He revolutionized the modern drum set up and tom sizes of the day. I however still like the old standard 8x12 and 9x13 rack Toms . Steve is a legend.

Absolutely great archival footage. Love to listen to Gadd from this era. Keep posting & I'll kepp watching. I'm a bit dissapointed in some of the negative comments that I've seen on youtube regarding Gadd's playing today. Let's keep in mind that he's 70 years of age,& NOT 30 anymore. I think that he still plays w/a lot of conviction. Let's see how some of his detractors still play when they turn 70+.

Love that stuff 'twixt the kick and left hand snare... phew! I mean... I love it all. But that's some sick stuff there, when his right hand takes time out for a spell.

This is the band L' image, where Steve was becoming the legend he would become. I went to school with Steve and believe me, what you see here was a style and feel totally unique to Steve at the time.

Its amazing to see this, knowing what he is and what he evolves into as the years go by. He is so much more refined now, a bit more musical and a better touch. This is still pretty kick-ass though, no doubt about it.

Disagree. Steve was fully formed by this time and as another comment notes played on Aja the same year.

@@tipasoneinthisone9498 Agree , he even studied with and was mentored by the Timpani legend John Beck. His skills are hardly reachable. Great body motion, great musicality by, extremely good feet, you can’t go better, you just can go different

Warren Bernhart on Keys and the monster Mike Manieri on Vibes. Mike came out of the Be-bop era as a young guy, played and recorded with Buddy Rich's small group for a couple of years but ultimately transitioned to more modern stuff...as you can see here.

watch steve gadd solo with mike mainieri in 1977. then watch him in 2007. same man, much greater knowledge and experience. but the passion is not the same, the body is eroding. he can hardly play traditional grip anymore. let alone expend that kind of energy.

  • @robinbolton6064

Steve Gadd never knocked me out. He is a good groove player but he wasn't smooooooth. Very choppy.
He played like he was falling down the stairs. Nothing any more than most drummers can replicate.
    I never got the hype.
