  • Mic Pre and Microphone Comparison Test - Shootout #1
[SoundCloud Files Available - See Below]
This comparison video was put together to show the differences between the Lawson L47 MKII microphone through three different mic pres (Lawson L110A, Neve 1073LB & Api 512c). For reference we also recorded vocals using a vintage 1975 Neumann U87 through all three mic pres. All guitars were recorded with the Lawson L47 MKII mic.
No compression, no eq and no effects were used on this video. You will hear the raw recording straight from the mic to the mic pre and into the converter (AVID HD16 I/O). All tracks have been tracked closely in volume through Protools HD. All tracks were level matched as close as possible to give a fair comparison between all the gear.

The API does what API's are known for, puts whatever you run through it, right up front. The Lawson/API was my choice on the guitar. Neve/Neumann wins on the vocal. The way which the Neve's transformers color the singer's low end here was the deciding factor for me, plus, a U87 usually just sits beautifully. I like the Lawson 47 a lot, but on this guys voice the 87/Neve

Larry Sentelle the 87 dead in the critical mid vocal range. With that signature icy top 87. Most professional Modern day engineers never use a U87 anymore. When transistor based electronics took off everybody ditched their tube mics also. Now a vintage U47 goes for big bucks. It’s come full circle. Much more clarity with the Lawson.

I have been trying to look up new gear to upgrade to when I have the money and the budget, the API 512c was a big consideration as the first new pre amp to get. I was blown away at the vocals. Of course the Neve 1073lb sounded very smooth and clean, I just loved the detailed sound of the API.

Ya I love the sound of that neve on the L47. I have a L-47. I love it but I run it through my LA-610 and it’s too much warmth from all those tubes. That’s why I like running a FET like the 1073. So lately I’ve been running UAD NEVE 1073 but doesn’t quite sound as good as the actual hardware I don’t really think. I have a goal to work towards now tho cause I always wanted a U87 but I actually liked the 47 in This shoot out

Nice shoot out. I thought all the preamps did a great job. I liked the color of the lawson and neve, the Api always sounds good maybe slightly punchier. Either mic works for me. I like the top end on both mics. The low mid weight of the Lawson was very good, to me even more so than the U87 which surprised me. I've been looking for a good U47 clonish tube mic. I think I've finally found the one I want.

first of all thank you for sharing this. I use neve a lot but on that example I liked the API/Neumann best.

Red Ramroom paired with the api 525 and de-Essed a bit, you’d be set!

The 87 sounds lousy compared to the Lawson. Icy top end and dull mids

  • @SteveTaggs

Nice comparison! The Lawson is very clean, the Neve simply adds that typical pro sound to the signal your ears know from the radio for many years and the API has a nice explosive character.

Fact is there are a lot of very good mics being made now that weren’t available in the 70’s. The cost of a new U87AI just doesn’t hold up to the competition anymore. Listen to the U87 on words with S & T sounds. Like submarine, top, dark in the mid range and hyped on the top end makes it sound harsh.

I agree, there are many other mics out there that easily compete with the U87ai.

Great video! The 1073 does add nice warmth to the mics. The API seems a bit more FET than even the Lawson Pre.. I'm just learning about Lawson Mics -- wow they are great! Can you describe the difference between the L47 MKII and the older L47C? Just wondering if the C is warmer? But I definitely prefer its sound over the U87 -- shocker!

because your vocal is very good, you deserve a better mic. Please get a Telefunken U47. Even U87 seems too cheep for your nice voice.
