Best helmet setup for dual motovlogging! - How to record directly off your comms unit.

  • Looking for a good solution for how to setup a helmet for dual motovlogging besides sticking a second mic up to your speaker?? I wanted to start recording some dual vlogs while riding with folks but did not want to just stick a second mic up by my Cardo helmet speaker. I needed to come up with a way of recording clean audio directly off my Cardo onto 1 channel of my GoPro while recording audio off my vlogging mic onto the 2nd channel. This allows for each channel to be leveled and edited independently for a nice, clean mono mix on my videos. So here's the solution that I came up with!
    In this video I walk you through the connections required and do a walking test with my riding buddy, Vvoltz while we go to Patriot Harley-Davidson to check out the new Anniversary Fat Boy. Too cold to ride but we'll do the riding video this weekend. What do you think about the audio quality??? Let me know in the comments.
    Do you have a better solution for a dual vlog setup?? Let me know in the comments.

    Thanks for the "how to video"! My kids and I are going to an RV park in east TN. with new black hero 8 GoPros and I was wanting to capture the audio from our Cardo packtalks on our videos. Really appreciate the wiring diagram! I had purchased the purple panda mic and didn't realize the difference between the 2 ring and 3 ring connectors until watching your video and carefully going over the wiring diagram before purchasing the needed components from Amazon. Hopefully we can mimic your setup so we can have superb video footage for our own family archives. I'm 56 years old, son 25 and daughter 21 and are all new to the motovlog arena. Hopefully you will do another video about video editing and the best and easiest software to use for novice beginners. Thanks again for such a detailed and informative video!

    Great video and I have to say I have been looking for a video on this without having to cut, splice and soldier wires. I think your is the easiest to follow. The only thing is I heard you saying someone had a Sena that was not quite right. Well I am using HD 30K which is made by Sena and it looks like I will have to remove the standard helmet speakers in order to connect a separate pair into the splitter. Which all you have to do is remove the allen screw and unplug them. They do have a port for another set but if you do not remove the originals, once you plug in another set it will disable the original speakers. Other then that it all should work and I will give an update once tested.

    • @withPercy
      @withPercy  4 года назад

      I would love to see how that works when you get it done. I have a few friends who use Sena's that would like to replicate my Cardo setup. I don't know why Sena just doesn't use a standard audio connector for the output. I'm assuming that the proprietary connector they use must be smaller?

    • @Randystites66207

    Have you considered using another splitter cable to use the lav mic for both the gopro input and the cardo input?

    • @withPercy
      @withPercy  3 года назад +1

      Most of the dual vlogs I've released on the channel are with the Cardo's connected over DMC for rider-to-rider. The only thing coming over the Bluetooth are nav directions and music. But those are crystal clear. The input side of the Cardo doesn't use a standard connector (like the 3.5mm on the output side). So you would have to custom make a splitter for that and then you'd have the an issue to address with input variances. But it's really not needed with this set up.

    Bummer, just found your video with the cardo dual vlog setup. I just ordered the connectors for the three mic setup. One from the cardo, one lav for my speech, and the third one to pick up from my speakers. Your setup is way better, only one mic for the whole setup. So you do not use the wire coming from the cardo unit to attach the cardo mic? Correct?

    • @withPercy
      @withPercy  4 года назад

      You still have to use the Cardo mic. There’s no way around that. With this set up, you eliminate the third mic up by your speaker and you record clean audio do whatever is coming into the Cardo. Music, other riders, etc.

    Would this be the easiest way if I’m not interested in isolating the channels in post? I still want to capture my go pro lav mic and my cardo conversation. But I’m not doing a lot of post. Basically can I use regular splitters and extensions to capture the Audio. Knowing I can’t separate them. Reason I ask is there a reason a lot more options in angles and lengths if I don’t need to separate the channels in post.

    • @withPercy
      @withPercy  3 года назад

      The reason that I split the channels is because the levels aren't the same coming over the Cardo and over the mic in the helmet. And if they are on top of each other there is no way to separate them to adjust volume without doing a ton of editing in post... and even then there are certain conditions where you just can't work it out when things overlap. Post editing with the setup I use is pretty straightforward. Match the volume levels on the two channels then export your video with the audio set for monolog.

    • @SaltyOldGamer
      @SaltyOldGamer 16 дней назад +1

      I answered my own question trying this out. You are losing stereo sound, so I guess you just have to separate the channels and make them both double-mono-LR. I'll give it a go and it's a small sacrifice to get all the cardo chat recorded with the lav mic. Thanks for putting this together. But omg all the cables... 🤣

    • @withPercy
      @withPercy  58 минут назад

      Not at all. The audio from your mic is the same. The audio from other people on the mesh is being filtered/processed with their Cardo’s noise filtering for mesh communications. Good luck with the channel changes!!

    • @withPercy
      @withPercy  Год назад +1

      Hey man. I don’t know what you’re using for editing but there should be an option in the editor to switch your audio to mono or dual mono. You need to switch to mono rather than stereo. That will duplicate the tracks on the opposite side from where they were recorded.

    The mic to GoPro Media mod via the channel breakout adapter does not work. Cardo Audio comes through, but not mic. If I plug the lav mic directly into the media mod, it works.

      @@withPercy I have a Hero 9 and the media mod. Purchased another splitter again which arrived yesterday. It is the same as the splitter coming from the Cardo to the headphones, not a channel splitter. Same result. Mic not working, but getting audio from the Cardo to the GoPro. This is exactly what I bought,

      Process of elimination, its either the Mic or something with the GoPro.

    I've set this up exactly as you have. Most of the time it's fine, but at times it's like it's distorted and way too loud without me touching the volume. Did you get this?

    • @withPercy
      @withPercy  3 года назад

      Which Cardo do you have? I have the Bold and I know that I turned down the volume WHILE I had someone talk, which got rid of the distortion that I had. I believe that the volume on music, commands, and intercom can be adjusted independent of each other if you adjust the volume while something is coming across at that time. If the distortion is caused by the volume bing to high, that should fix it. If you are still getting some distortion, check to make sure that your connections are all clean and tight. Several people have reached out to me to tell me they've implemented this and everything is crystal clear. Please let me know if this doesn't fix your problem.

      That's the same setup that I have. I will say that when I switched to my Corsair-X, I did change my mic because I thought the audio from my mic was too hot. I think that has to do with the acoustics in the helmet and the proximity of the mic to your lips. Here's the new mic that I'm using now: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QXBQ92J/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

      I think Sena uses a proprietary connector for audio so that would not work.

      Are you saying that the volume of the other rider is faint? Have the other person keep talking while you turn the volume up. That should increase the volume on that channel but not the rest of your Cardo. At least that’s how it’s been working on mine.
