  • In this All Sports History video, we'll take a look back to 1969 when a small baseball field in Montreal was transformed into a near 30,000 seat major league ready stadium. In today’s video, we’ll take a look back at how the Montreal Expos' desperate search for a temporary stadium, found them transforming an amateur baseball field into their home that lasted for eight seasons.
This Jarry Park and Montreal Expos Documentary includes:
When the Expos Baseball team looked at Jarry Park Montreal for a potential home, it only had 3,000 seats, but the area surrounding the stadium was largely undeveloped and could be expanded more easily and more cheaply. With mounting pressure from MLB to make a decision, the Expos chose Jarry Park baseball stadium and plans then got underway to renovate the stadium to bring it up to Major League standards. The biggest change of course was adding 25,00 seats to Jarry Park, bringing its capacity to just over 28,000. While that still made it the smallest Major League stadium at that time, it was only just 500 seats shy of Cincinnati’s Crosley Field capacity. Also, even as the league’s smallest stadium, Jarry Park still managed to draw 1.2 million people in its first year. This placed it just inside the top ten attended teams for that year, including ahead of more established clubs like the Yankees, Orioles, Giants, and Phillies.
Montreal Expos Jarry Park was of course intended to be a temporary home, until the Expos permanent home could be built. In 1970, Montreal was awarded the Summer Olympics for 1976, and part of that deal was a planned brand new stadium with a retractable roof that could host the opening and closing ceremonies. Montreal’s mayor, Jean Drapeau had also promised the Expos owner Charles Bronfman, that not only would the Olympic Stadium be the Montreal Expos new stadium but that it also would be open by 1972. Well, as that year approached it became clear that the stadium would not in fact be opening on time, mainly due to a workers strike in 1972 that caused a massive delay in the groundbreaking for the building. This setback caused the Expos to have to get permission from MLB to stay at Jarry Park another season, and repeat this process again and again, as there were continuous delays building Olympic Stadium. It would take another five years before the new stadium was ready for the Expos to move in, and make it officially the Montreal Expos Stadium.
The Montreal Expos last game played at Jarry Park, was actually a doubleheader, and it took place on September 26, 1976. The club lost both of Montreal Expos last home game in a doubleheader to the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-1 in the first game, and 2-1 in the last game. Jarry Park witnessed memorable moments in Montreal Exposl history and full of Montreal Expos highlights, including the Expos' inaugural game and the legendary performances of players like Rusty Staub and Gary Carter. Sadly, In 2005 the Montreal Expos move to Washington D.C., and became the Washington Nationals. Fortunately, the club has continued to honor their roots over the years from time to time. For Expos baseball 50th anniversary, the Nationals wore Expos throwback uniforms and replicated Jarry Park’s scoreboard for the game against the Kansas City Royals on July 6, 2019. Although the Montreal Expos Olympic Stadium became their new home, Jarry Park remains a cherished landmark, evoking nostalgia and fond memories for baseball enthusiasts, particularly those who experienced the magic of the Expos' early years in this historic venue.
So what did you guys think of the baseball field at Jarry Park being transformed into tennis courts? Do you agree with Jarry Park’s pool being ranked number three as an all-time unique landing spot for home runs? Where would you place it? And, would you like to see Major League Baseball return to Montreal in the future, through a Montreal Expos expansion club? Let me know in the comments below!

Two Major League seasons, including Bill Stoneman's no-hitter in 1973, and I never saw a single pitch. I'm now 70, and it will always be a fond memory for me.

Blue Monday (Rick Monday's October '81 home run), the '94 season (The Expos had the best major league record at 74-40 before the strike) and of course 2004 when the franchise was moved to Washington, all key tragedies of the Expo legacy.

Watched my share of games in the left field bleachers (Jonesville) at Jarry Park. Tickets were $1 but only 50 cents if you were a member of the Young Expos Club. Mack Jones always threw a ball to us kids. We usually went to double-headers to get the most bang for our buck. Was there the day they broke 30,000 or the first time bringing in extra chairs. I think they turned a triple play in the night cap. Saw Juan Marichal, Bob Gibson and other greats pitch there. But dearest to our hearts are names like Rusty Staub, Coco Laboy, Bobby Wine, Mack Jones, Manny Mota, Ron Brand, John Boccabella, Bill Stoneman, Dan Mcginn, Mudcat Grant and of course their tireless manager Gene Mauch.

During the mid-70s -- I think 1973 or 1974 -- I was on an Eastern Canada trip and, during a couple days in Montreal in August, going to see a twi-night double-header at Jarry Park. It was a delightful, intimate setting for a ball game. But it was cold. Having only a light summer jacket, I was freezing by the middle of the second game. But I couldn't leave - the pitcher for visiting team (Burt Hooton for the Cubs) was taking a no-hitter into the 7th inning. Finally, in the 7th, someone got a hit for the Expos, and I got to go so someplace warmer. A memorable experience, nevertheless.

As a Montrealer, it would be cool to see the city get a team back. The problem is that most people, including myself, don't want the city or province to spend hundreds of millions to finance a ballpark. Hey Mr. AllSports, the Olympic Stadium is very cavernous, and not a real homey environment for baseball. There would have to be, I believe, a domed stadium for it to work, privately financed, or maybe co-financed. Montreal is a vibrant city, lots of energy and forward momentum, but it needs to be done right, not on the cheap.

There was nothing like the fever of 1969. Baseball was totally alien in Montreal and the city immersed itself fanatically into the sport. It even had to be translated into French. The team was bad but the crowds were huge. The small park was intimate and I think the low level players enjoyed being heroes, something they had not experienced in their careers to date. It was a love in. Sadly reality came to roost and the harsh weather and mediocre attendance eventually caught up with the franchise. As for its return, a domed stadium is required and good luck with that. As for the tennis stadium, at least its been put to use and part of the original was kept. The tennis tournament is supported heavily and Jarry Park lives on. Finally I never forgot going to the bleachers for $1.50 and seeing guys carrying a case of 24 beers under their arm into the stadium. Now the going rate is $14 a beer bought at a hockey game. By the second game of the doubleheader, these guys were looped.

There had been an Expo67 mania during the world's Fair

      Plutôt Dites Y

While I was disappointed that Jarry Park had been reappropriated for tennis, it was nice to know that I was standing where the baseball field used to be. I also took the opportunity to hunt down an authentic Expos cap. I know you can buy them online, but I wanted to buy one in person in Montreal. It took me a while, but I finally found one. I also was able to speak to a couple of people who had been Expos fans. I was struck by the fact that they were still hurt and angry that their team had left. I guess it's the same sort of hurt the Brooklyn Dodger and New York Giants fans felt when their teams left them.

My mother is a Montrealer and always described Jarry Park as a normal municipal park where anyone could stop by, sit on the grass and watch a game. This always seemed impossible to me, and when I lived in the city as an undergrad in the ‘90s I checked out the park, which now had DuMaurier Stadium there and I figured “ah, that must be the original ballpark!”
Of course it wasn’t, as this video shows, and I later realized my mom’s recollections are from before MLB even came to Montreal (she’d left the city by then), so the temporary seating hadn’t been constructed and it legitimately was a normal city park…

Expos legend Steve Rogers was born in my hometown of Jefferson City Missouri. Those teams had more talent than may realize. Besides Staub, Dawson, Carter and Rogers there was Tim Raines, Pete Rose, Warren Cromartie, Pedro Martinez, Larry Walker and Vladi Guerrero. And they had great managers like Dick Williams, Frank Robinson, Bill Virdon, Felipe Alou and Gene Mauch.

The left-field bleachers from that point on became known as Jonesville. Then there was the super energetic organist who was without equal in the MLB at that time. And lets not forget the PA announcer who would announce John BOCCAAAAAAAAA BELLAAAAAA every time he came to the plate. Those were the days. Pure magic.

Autostade was designed and built for the 1967 Expo, hosting many 'oversized' events that were too big for the island fairgrounds.
Each section of the stadium were constructed as separate units to be dismantled and re-erected on a new site if required.
The name came from automotive companies who payed for it - AMC Chrysler, GM & Volvo.
One early stand out feature was first use of the single-shaft "goose-necked" field goal posts that are the standard for football
north and south of the border. Would never have been a suitable layout or location for MLB baseball.
Jarry had it's drawbacks, but it didn't compare to the mess at Seattle's Sick's stadium in '69 where Pilots did outdraw 4 other teams.
The first year, there was no direct tunnel from Expos dugout to clubhouse. Both teams (and pitchers knocked out in-game) had the long
walk down LF foul line to the clubhouses.
There were several areas with names like - "Jonesville" for Mack Jones left field bleachers where his homers would land etc..
Drapeau, the little man who's ego would overshadow his monumental dreams that cost taxpayers million$.
Pope wouldn't pay for naming rights but DuMarier would.
Baker Bowl RF was short, the wall was monstrous, Phils use Lifebouy - and the still stink!

I suspect one reason why the Expos failed to attract a large fan base was changing demographics. When the Expos started playing, Montreal had a relatively large English-speaking community and they were the ones who most supported the team. But over time, more and more Anglophiles starting leaving Montreal. As a result, support for the Expos withered on the vine. Since baseball is not a French-Canadian sport (how many French-Canadian professional baseball players have there been?), it would not be feasible to bring MLB baseball back to Montreal.

Just to nitpick a bit, you said that Jarry Park hosted 2 interleague NFL-AFL pre-season games in the park's first year and listed the Lions vs Patriots and the Steelers vs Giants. At the time these games were played the Steelers were still part of the NFL. They didn't move to the AFC until the merger beginning in 1970. That said, the Phillies clinched their first ever division title at Jarry Park in 1976 after winning the first game of the September 26th double header. The Phils took 4 of 5 games from the Expos in that series. Sadly the Expos never legitimately made the playoffs in their existence only making it by winning the 2nd half of the strike shortened 1981 season and they got completely jobbed by the strike in 1994 as they were clearly the best team in baseball that season. Had the strike not happened and the Expos made it to if not won the World Series I don't think they move.
