  • Here is a quick video showing the difference between SDS Plus & SDS MAX bits. The SDS Plus hammer bit has a shank about 3/8" of an inch with 2 slots and 2 dimples. Hilti calls them a TE-C bit. SDS hammers typically are used for holes 5/32 to around 3/4" all though you can get sold bits in diameters up to 1-1/4". SDS MAX hammer bits have a shank about 3/4" and have 3 slots and 2 dimples. Hilti will refer to these as TE-Y bits. SDS MAX hammers typically are drilling holes 3/4" to 1-1/2". If you mainly drilling holes of that diameter, you will benefit from improved speed. Bits for the SDS MAX hammers are available in diameters of 1/2" to 2" solid. MAX bits are also available in lengths up to 66"!
