He’s definitely one of the reasons I became a cubs fan. This is such a wonderful day and even better offseason. I am so proud to consider myself a cubs fan! Love you guys and what you do!
Sammy hit his 37th hr of the big season directly to me in the RF bleachers. It was slow motion, I froze and didnt lift up my glove. It bounced off the guy in front of me who had his hands up and went into the basket. Our photo ended up in Sports Illustrated. Even though i froze it is my best childhood memory. Go cubs!
Sammy gave us thrills. I was at gm 1 when he hit a game tying home run in the 9th vs urbina. I been ta Wrigley hundreds of times, and that was the loudest ever
Man. Seeing this makes me emotional and gives me chills. My Grandpa loved the Cubs and Sammy and he introduced me to Cubs baseball when I was 7yrs old. To this day, more than 40 yrs have passed and love this team win or lose. Welcome home Sammy!
I’m from Syracuse, NY and I became a Cubs fan as a kid because of Sammy Sosa, Kerry Wood, Mark Prior, and WGN for always having their games on. Glad to hear Sammy is back!
@@joecasey1329 what you think he's going to hand out syringes pre game? he going to replace the bats with corked ones? lol let the man come back and apologize for his wrong doings. Regardless of drugs him and Big Mac saved baseball
@@joecasey1329Joe I’m sure you’ve never made any mistakes in your life but either way Sammy it’s time to move on. There’s a ton of players in that era who all were doing the same thing, yeah it sucked but it wasn’t against the law. Life is too short, time to let it go.
@ of course I’ve made mistakes. I’m not asking to be worshipped either.. especially after spending the last several years of my career lying to the fans. I don’t care about other players. They aren’t the subject here. Maybe it’s time for YOU to let it go, don’t effing tell me that garbage. He’s a POS. He was a shitty teammate and a selfish, lazy self aggrandizing, pain in the ass. Maybe someday you’ll understand what principles and integrity are? I doubt it, though.
I am happy to hear it. If Mark McGuire can get a redemption arch in St. Louis, Sammy Sosa deserves one in Chicago. I hope you guys might be able to get an interview with Sammy. I think it would be special.
@RedneckOutdoorsman4life You are using a baseball channel to push religion on people. On to me. That isn't cool. Not everyone believes in the same things as you do. On top of that, you assume that I must not believe. Which is true actually. I am an atheist and sorry to inform you, but there are no invisible sky daddies doing anything. I am sure in many ways you might be a decent guy. I can't say if you are or are not. I don't know you. But I can say exactly how I feel about religion. It is complete bullshit.
Long, long overdue -- just thrilled the man and organization got this done before Sammy passed the bridge. The first book I ever purchased myself was the Sosa V Mcguire home run race anthology; I knew the ending, but was still rooting hard for Sammy with every turnt page... I say that to say this; I owe much of my love for baseball to two men. My father -- who was drafted by the white sox (ugh) but never got above AA -- of course, and Slammin' Sammy Sosa! Love this for Sammy, Love this for the org, but mostly I love that the most important player of my childhood is no longer persona non grata to my favorite organization. Good work to everyone involved!
Long overdue. It never made sense that the organization distance themselves from Sosa when they had Manny Ramirez and Mark McGwire working in the organization in some capacity.
Sosa is our generation's Ernie Banks. My first Cubs game was the day after my 11th birthday. 8/19/1998 vs STL. Sammy hit # 48 to take the lead in the race, but McGwire came right back with 48 and 49. Cubbies lost that day 6-8 making their record 69-57. Boys I just dropped that from memory because I remember it like it was yesterday.
Guys I hope you get Sosa on the show. I grew up watching Ryno play live on TV and Sammy Sosa playing. I been watching the team since the 80s. Looking forward to the season and excited to see Tucker and Sosa and Swanson and Steele and the boys at the convention. Keep up the great work.
This is long over due! Baseball was Struggling until Mark McGuire and Sammy put on s Show for the world to see. I STILL have an un-opened Box of Wheaties with Sammy's potential autographed baseball card in it, WELCOME HOME SAMMY!!!
Such good news. I was 31 in 1998, but I hold that season like a childhood memory. Not to mention Sammy sprinting onto the field, with the American flag, will live in my thoughts forever. Thank you to Sammy ands Ricketts for the homecoming.
I would also try and get Andre Dawson, Gregg Maddux, Derek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Shawon Dunston, Mark Grace, Rick Sutcliffe, Lee Smith, Joe Girardi, Ryne Sandberg and any other legend you can get. If they are there.
if everything is right with the world, when tom nickels introduces sammy at the cubs con he will get loud boos. And when it turns to sammy he will get an incredible standing ovation. that way, everyone will know, who's fault this long separation was.
I lived in the states from early 80s and absolutely loved the people and the country and being English our two countries have so much in common but cheating in sports is absolutely frowned upon and never excepted . Why do Americans except it and in sammy sosa case treat him like a hero 😢😢😢 so sad from a country that and rightly so sets so many standards for the rest of the world to follow
Sammy walked out on Cubs and did steroids.. so why have a emergency podcast? Why not keep everyone who is a cub fan. About Ryno and keeping everyone up to date. Ryno is a better cub than Sosa plus Sosa had been caught with cork in bat.
Sammy Sosa is still the Cubs career all time Home Run leader. It is possible that Sammy Sosa will get his number retired. He might also be inducted into the Chicago Cubs team Hall of Fame. As for the National Baseball Hall of Fame, it is like a club. Not every great player from the past can have an individual plaque. The National Baseball Hall of Fame does honor great events from the past such as the 1998 MLB Season.
Last minute invite. If he can't attend in 2025, will he be invited in 2026? That's the TRUE TEST if the organization really wants him back in the fold.
If we are bringing back old legends, why not bring back KB to back up at 1st and 3rd? I mean I know the money is an issue but would be cool to bring back one of the 2016 champs after loosing the professor…
Sam looks like Alfred E. Neumann in the thumbnail ! If Sammy is asked to speak at a Cubs function will he speak English or forget like in the hearings .
Matt’s prediction streak continues. Congrats to you and happy for both of you. Personally, I lost respect for Sammy after it became apparent that he was juicing, and I predate his era so not as big a deal for me. Overall, he’s probably spent enough time in purgatory to be welcomed back into the fold at this point.
I realize you both and others have an emotional bond with Sosa. He was a childhood hero of many and no doubt he and McGwire's rivalry brought back baseball. (Banks was my childhood hero). I can forgive him for the steroids, since it was a common practice and baseball hadn't banned them. However, I don't forgive Sosa for not owning up to it earlier, walking out on his team the last game of the season, causing friction in the clubhouse, the corked bat (which I will never believe was a one time thing) and faking that he couldn't speak english. I'm glad this now has closure but it would be unfortunate if he gets a statue and/or a foul pole pennant. IMO he is not in the same class as Banks, Williams, Santo, Jenkins and Sandberg.
That’s kind of a BS comment. Sammy hopefully has and will continue to come clean. He was by all accounts not a favorite of his teammates and he was an embarrassing figure at times to the fans. Forgiveness is fine, remember who is apologizing in these statements, the owners have done nothing wrong.
Eh, pretending the most influential man in your org didn't exist for 2 decades is a wrong, but I will agree that the org didn't bring the situation onto themselves.
As time goes by and people are more indoctrinated since birth into the "better living through chemistry" paradigm (the thing in 2020 being a prime example), I think people will be more accepting of the steroid era in baseball. I'm not saying I personally agree with it. I'm just saying how I see things trending.
Sosa is a user, a cheater, a liar, and a hothead. What he did to baseball, (and what he's trying to do now with his non-apology apology) are reprehensible. This pretense is all financially motivated, and I for one, am disgusted.
Sammy won’t make a dime from any of this, the man has finally swallowed his pride let him be, he and McGwire basically saved baseball back in the day. Time to let it go.
Mark McGuire has been welcomed back to the Cardinals & the MLB. Mark McGuire has also been a hitting coach for several MLB teams. Many people remember growing up being Cubs fans watching Sammy Sosa on WGN everyday. Sammy Sosa is still the Cubs career all time Home Run leader. Sammy Sosa is one of the most popular Cubs players of all time.
Despicable how this ownership treated Sammy, when the majority of major league baseball players were using during his era, treat him like a man, and in time he will tell his story. This is bitter, sweet.🎉

Great first step on both Sammy's and Rickett's part. I will gladly welcome him back to Wrigley.

I loved the 2:20 games. I am in Eastern time zone. I was a teacher and could get home in time to see most of the game
Would love to see Sammy at the Convention. Want to see them announce and introduce Roki Sasaki too!

Great news for Cubs fans!
Sammy belongs in Chicago he's a true Cubs icon
Yes!!
Historically, Sosa is one of the most important Cubs. Put this dumb chapter to rest.
Hearing this... I got that new Superman Theme in my head from the trailer!

Should not have apologized since Bud Selig the commissioner at the time knew what was going on and is in the Hall of Fame.
I've always been amused that the Cubs never needed an apology when they were making a fortune off his labor.
