Saw it this evening. One thing this movie gets right more so than any other film I’ve seen is how insanely loud gunfire is. Especially in enclosed spaces. It really jolts you as a viewer and makes you very uncomfortable as it should.
Yeah as a veteran I always get kinda taken out of the immersion of movies. Because they never get explosions or gunfire right. Tanks and Helis never sound right. Or explosions in the distance.
Heat did a good job with the sound design
@@sk8mafia214 Michael Mann has been accused of being an overly stylized filmmaker but I think that is his charm and that is his greatest strength especially when it comes to realism of violence is that The only way any of the heady ideas that any of his characters in his motion pictures are able to accomplish are usually simply the result of their logical through line would result in shit that is completely unpredictable or rather not optimal of an outcome as they had previously calculated… Meaning we can’t best each other simply through violence but we can through behavior
Dunkirk was like that too. Had the gun sounds and stukas at realistic levels in cinemas as per Norlans orders.
Agreed the sound stood out, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a contender for an Academy award for sound
Saw this film last night. I think it’s an extremely distressing masterpiece. Like nothing else. The sound is absolutely incredible. Definitely worth seeing at the cinema.
Lots of people wanting to know what was going on I think miss the point a little. In a civil war it's very likely you wouldn't know who to trust in a lot of situations. You'd be walking a fine line in an effort to survive, and sometimes you would never find out the truth of a situation. You'd simply be happy to have survived it. This film demonstrates this perfectly.
This statement is extremely astute and historical. Check the Spanish civil war. No distinct sides, no one to trust, just hunker down and try to protect your family and anything you have that others may want or need. Your neighbors and friends will become your adversaries in a fight for survival. This will be real HORROR.
From the clues the movie gave: the president ran for a third term, probably lost or had a controversial and doubtful win (like declaring the election was stolen).
People started rioting and the FBI investigated the electoral result.
President then disbanded the FBI and used the army against rioters.
Many states didn't recognize the president after that and split up, but his armed supporters started acting as his "brownshirts" and they took many state s by force.
California and Texas stood strong and started a campaign to take back DC and restore the rule of law.
They are unlikely allies because they represent what the US is supposed to be: a diversity of opinion working under the same power structure.
You mean like REAL LIFE, the Truth or Lies your being told and then Believe? Fascist Communist DemoRats who's president took 30+ Million dollars from China Russia and other countries just love their Corrupt High Treasonous president who never should be allowed to be president. But the Corrupt Treasonous FBI CIA DOJ and many other High Treasonous agencies, see no Evil because they are EVIL with them... Evil loves Evil, but now we know who they all are. Death loves Treason...
Got out from seeing the film about an hour ago. There's definitely a "side" to the war that the film leans into, but Garland does a good job of letting the story play out through the lense of the photo journalists. It's not a North/South or Conservative/Liberal kind of civil war. The United States is broken up into multiple factions, not just two, although California and Texas are the "leaders" of the Western Forces. You can tell throughout the film that the factions are only working together to get the President out of power due to him subverting the Constitution to get a third term and abolshing the FBI, but once that issue is settled then all four factions will potentially turn on each other to gain power. I think the biggest takaway from this film for me was that we need to be careful about how we view our fellow Americans and how we treat each other. If we get to the point where we view each other as anything less than human then there is no hope for America. Jesse Plemons did an amazing job for such a short scene. He definitely dipped back into the Todd role from Breaking Bad.
Just saw the film and when I heard "third term", I instantly thought "dictatorship".
Most Americans don’t even know what the Constitution is all about and both Parties are constantly undermining it. I doubt most people would stand up for it.
Garland gave an interview and he said, and I paraphrase....'extremism problems are the result of popularism' no need to say anything more about what the film is about
@@josephcioppa1943 im not a big fan of trump.. but that sounds like a leftist shot from garland. Expected. Little goes through censors that would be strongly anti current regime. Ill wait till i can see it for free. I hate feeding the enemy.
The difference between Todd and his role here is that he relishes in toying with them. Even though he was gonna shoot them all anyway.
Garland is very smart and careful when answering the questions.
Probably because this is a leftist propaganda movie and is completely divorced from reality. There is no civil war scenerio where a gun grabbing state like Commiefornia would join forces with a “free state” like TX. Terrible writing and he clearly hasn’t a clue what America is all about.
I really hope Alex continues directing movies
He has said recently that the sequel to 28 days later is already in the works.
@@russel777 he's only writing that movie
@@ragdalis Don't worry, after a couple of writing jobs he will continue directing, he confirmed that in the recent Collider interview.
His TV show DEVS is amazing too.
It was sweet hearing him say how kind he thought the interviewer was
Crazy well done movie, I don’t get why people don’t understand why there’s not much of a backstory
they were expecting it to be about a civil war and that was only the window dressing for the actual story
The discourse surrounding this film will be relentless…just like Jake’s questions. Another great interview in the books, good sir! :)
So many people fail to appreciate this style of storytelling that he has gravitated towards recently. And I am so happy to see Jake bring that up. Appreciating that bringing the subjective quality of art back to film so that a film can be appreciated simply for the art it provides. It is brilliant. Garland is never appreciated enough for that.
This civil war story is retarded.
Garland gave an interview and he said, and I paraphrase....'extremism problems are the result of popularism' no need to say anything more about what the film is about.....stop the propaganda BS
@@josephcioppa1943 lol. One. You completely misquoted him. Two. You are too dumb to understand filmmaking anyway. Don't try. Lol.
The silence early on in the film felt like being at an art gallery, just observing visual scenarios with other people in the room taking in and appreciating everything by your side.
@@Dousch agreed. As a viewer it is such an almost eerie feeling in the theater and it was awesome.
This movie was so different than anything I’ve seen I can’t explain it
I love that Garland makes movies that engage the viewer as part of the storytelling process - this is what great cinema does! Nothing is 'dumbed down" for the audience - Alex treats you as intelligent and engaged.
Just got back from seeing this. Amazing film, a definite must see!
Garland gave an interview and he said, and I paraphrase....'extremism problems are the result of popularism' no need to say anything more about what the film is about
He really said: you were too stupid to get the hints mate 💕
what a brilliant film - I loved it and loved the fact it was not all spelt out for the audience - and as a viewer you had to bring your own thoughts and perspectives to the story...
Truly amazing work
Wasn't the point that regardless of who starts it, war is horrific?
Just finished watching and wow Civil war did great job telling this war through the lense of the press with some of the most edge of your seat anxiety driven scenes...I think the people negative reviews are due to people's expectations based on the trailer unfortunately but for me was amazing 👏
Love your interview style. Great interview with a master filmmaker.
Alex garland giving every actor props is soooo awesome and also is idea as a director to do that is something so smart that I wouldn’t think of
One of my favorite things about this channel is the questions asked.
Jake is so dope, seriously. Great listener.
So just saw the film a little bit ago and it was really good, where I'm hoping for a prequel, cause yeah, I really want to see how this all came to be.
Garland, as director, believes you already know how this has come to be, and knows thats the actual scary element of the story
great interview
Perfect interview.
Great last question!
Good interview
The gun fire is what stood out I started looking around
Only in America
Jesse Plemons was scary af.
what kind of scary?
@darkknight2864
To me in the sense of the extent a human can go to dark places and how it can be for nothing/just want to
@@nelsongallegos6899 He was making a joke as in he was phrasing it just like Jesse was with "what kind of American".
Yea he did the best acting in the movie
Kirsten Dunst was a close second with her blank/broken stares
He’s WAY too good at playing a sociopath
Did anyone get subtle vibes from 28 days later especially with the soundtrack? So cool. Really great film.
Most important unanswered question from the film: What are those red sunglasses Jesse Plemons is wearing? Brand & make?
You get the impression he stole them off of a body. At one point you see that girl crawling across a baby. Perhaps there were other children in that group as well and he took it from one of them
@@Stygian360 ARe you saying they are cheap childrens sunglasses?
@@TheGoodfella2012 I didn't pay super close attention to them and I wouldn't think childrens sunglasses would fit an adult Jesse's size, but they do remind me of something a young person would wear.
@@Stygian360 OK, thanks. I was more curious as to the actual brand/make of the sunglasses and wondered if they are widely available
@@TheGoodfella2012 Jesse bought them himself according to Kirsten. I’m trying to find out too
Might sound like heresy but I think Alex garlands halo script is pretty fucking underrated
loved this film so, so much despite it horrifying me. people bashing it may not fully see their own feet in the marsh pit, and they're therefore simultaneously too close to the context and extremely distant from it. this has, of course, usually been the case with some americans for a long time
Oscar worthy film.
Alex Garland is a master.
It seems comical that Texas and California would unite but if there was a greater threat like a fascist president destroying democracy then perhaps they would put aside their differences.
Not comical if you think about it. Most of the woke stuff is being pushed by Feds. Once the Federal Govt goes fascist, all the liberal propaganda would end, Californians would go back to normal.
i was pretty mid on the film but really nice questions!
Brilliant film. Saw it tonight. Will see it again.
I found an alliance between Texas and California to be completely implausible. But I suppose it kept the story from being partisan.
Nevertheless thats where the real money is being made in the USA. Money likes money. Maybe your not paying attention???
why? you think one of them would side with a tyrant prez?
History is full of examples of nations that abandoned their principles and made alliances with their worst enemy. Think Stalin and Hitler
Do I spy 3 prime time emmys on that shelf over there?
I do not believe he would do a sit down with a channel with only 142k subscribers. This must be a prefab splitscreen like they did in the old days.
You don’t know how junkets work, do you?
I think he said he doesn't want to direct anymore, came from the press junkets. He really doesn't like to talk about things, that should talk for themselves.
He debunked that one, he will direct, just later.
As long as he's not retiring completely and will continue writing screenplays. Can. live with that
Like the movie ,here is an explanation without explaining a thing
Alex Garland is right up there in my top 5 directors currently working. Yorgos, Dennis, Alex, Nolan, and Scorsese.
Peter Strickland too
EXCELLENT questions!
The movie was beautifully shot and acted. I loved how the movie was apolitical. I also loved that it felt like an indie film inserted into a war movie.
It could be like starwars go backwards and forward
Why is this reporter SO HYPERBALIC?! 😂 Alex js a great filmmaker but… “you have the greatest filmography OF ALL TIME” is a but much no?! Lol
I have no idea who you are. But this was a good interview.
🎥📽️🎭9/10
I think it was fairly clear as the movie progressed as to why the president was so hated and why they wanted to get rid of him. I wasn't clear as to how the Western front amassed so much military might. I also wasn't clear how the president was able to enact the third term without the nation going completely bonkers. And I mean the nation in general not just a couple of upstart states. Put the movie was very tense with lots of great moments. Don't know if I would be excited to see it again, but it definitely had me on the edge of my seat
Common cause-like most guerilla warfare-is what I was reminded of most when it came to the WF. The way it worked/works with the VC, Syrian rebel groups or anti-occupation forces in Kashmir or...really, most situations in wartime, I think those are cases, largely, of young men picking up arms and going to fight for a big umbrella group that isn't really ideologically coherent, it's very capacious-but held together by the opposition to the common enemy. That's iconography the film uses, from VC to Iraq/Afghan military bases to the Khmer Rouge. And it made so much sense to me from that perspective. Secessionists would not necessarily BE ideologically coherent under that umbrella, which is why an early comment indicates that "they'll turn on each other" after. Once that common threat is neutralized, ideology does emerge more organically (it can be subsumed again). Thus the fact that there's MANY sides in this film-and to be fair there are many sides right now too: the Dems/GOP are a reductive way of parceling up 300+ million people, obviously, to a large degree. There's tons of different shades. But in the film it made even more sense: splinter groups may not emerge out of ideological difference but rather geography or military resources or infighting over petty details or a sense that some states are doing the "heavy lifting" etc.
In that light, I began to realize during the film that it made sooooo much sense that partisan politics would not map onto the movie's state of the world in any way whatsoever. If it did in any way, that would be even more baffling! Re: the third term... who knows? We could all make our own stories of that, to be fair. Military might-that slowly eroded as secession began? I don't know there, but the logic of guerilla warfare as explaining.
The Texas National Guard by itself would make the list of largest military forces in the world. Plus Fort Bliss and Foot Hood (now named Something else) reside in Texas. Both bases are home to an Armored Division and. Calvary Division which is essentially the same thing. The Chinooks all had the 1st CAV patch on them. As a retired Army Officer it makes sense to me just based on what I laid out above.
So who gives a crap, you think all texas national guard are right wing nuts? Naw if s were to hit the fan i guarantee most texan national guard would fight for democracy and freedom not authoritarian rule and citizen killings.@@kenricbourne9417
California and Texas combined are like almost a third of the US population and probably close to half the economy
That and numerous other states joined with them. If anything it seems the loyalists to the presidents weren’t very numerous
Bürgerkrieg....
Der Untergang....
Stark...
The scenes of devastation at Washington DC are reminiscent of Berlin in Oliver Hirschbiegel's epic film 🎬 Der Untergang (Downfall).
Der einzige Widerspruch liegt ausserhalb des Films: Was kommt zuerst!? Ein Atomwaffenangriff, der DC verwüstet, oder dieser?!
Very much like Quentin Tarantino....
Here, it's even more....
Epic, sporadic, intense, unmediated, eliminationist violence. Gunshots, grievous bullet wounds, blood loss, trauma and death. No scope of human agency. It's as if the origin of violence is transcendent. Negotiating terms without guns is fatal. Negotiating while wielding guns is futile and redundant. Therefore, make way for the sheer force & flow of violence.
The language....
Viktor Klemperer wrote ✍️ about LTI.... Lingua Tertii Imperii.... The language of the Third Reich. Similarly, English is now the language of war, _le Langue du Guerre_ .
Many are claiming it is not a "political movie".
Strange, as one side are: Deplorable baddies.
The other side are: Progressive goodies.
The "message" being promoted is subtle.
But it is not really hidden either.
I didn't see any good guys there. All sides were pretty shady. The president was the worst one.
He’s a genius.
There is no way that the side you're *supposed* to take isn't the Leftist one. No one in Hollywood would ever truly try to understand the conservative viewpoint (or the *super evil MAGA orange man* Republicans*). But subtlety certainly makes for better art. So, that's cool I guess.
Spinach and rotten.
My question is this, Jesse plemons character is obviously a complete sicko, was he wearing red lenses to make
It easier to just savagely do what he does or is it because he only sees blood point blank
This is the only scene in the film that matters. That has something to say. That even resembles the current threat to democracy that America is facing. If Alex Garland had any balls at all he would have leaned into this tension and centered the entire film around the real threat: people like this. Who very much exist in America today and are a hair’s breadth away from collapsing the republic.
/whoosh
Good until it wasn't.
That scene should have ended with Plemons letting them all go after he shot the dude from Hong Kong.
Maybe yells after them and says "Sorry about your friends"
And they're all just emotional and fucked up getting to Charlottesville.
I think it was pretty obvious what was about to happen to Wagner Moura’s character though.
LOVED THE SCENE WHERE ....... IN THE MIDDLE OF A SHOOTING WAR ....... THE GIRLS TRY ON SOME DRESS AND GO SHOPPING !!! Yeah .... I'm a chauvinist !
nice touch of levity
For anyone saying this is Trump. Remember when Obama was leaving office there were several people saying he should have a third term. He himself is even quoted as saying he would have won a third term. BTW-not defending Trump. And I’m seeing the movie this weekend
Obama is having a third term with a Biden puppet
This is Obamas 4th term. You think Biden is running the show now! and Obama lived in DC and never left running the coup against Trump. And yes, that's why our country is collapsing. If Hillary won it would have been sooner.
Trump is a fascist and Garland said this movie was about a fascist president. It more related to Trump and he's ideologies especially with his supporters not liking immigrants as shown in the scene with the still above
Once they mentioned dron stirkes, I immidiately thought of Obama. He had actually killed several American citizens with drons.
Garland baffles me. He's been lucky enough to spend decades doing what he loves, making a good living at it, receiving critical praise, he's married to a glamorous actress...and he seems like the most curmudgeonly jerk you could meet. He said in another interview that he likes to work with nice people, which is odd since he seems like he'd be an absolute drag to be around.
Did he run over your cat or something?
I just think he's british
Could not disagree more with that take. Every interview or interaction I have seen with him he is incredibly gracious. And actors adore the guy.
How odd, proof that we all look through different eyes
the movie showing the “Bugaloo Boys” ( the armed men with the hawaiian shirts ) and when they mention the “Antifa Massacre” means the context of the movie is the conflicted reality we have in the states today, politically, socially, and economically
Why did he have to put a blk woman at the end. It was so contrived.
Eh it was okay... not enough explained. Felt like there was no middle or end.
You needed it explained?? 😂 stick to marvel movies
Spoiler alert: Didn't want to ask him why he decided to kill all the minorities introduced in the movie? It's certainly a burning question of mine.
Umm, the female soldier giving orders in the end was black.
@@sherab2715 was she on the journey together with the main group on the road while they didn't have military assistance? I'm talking about the journalists as theirs was the lens the movie was framed in. They were the main group. Everything else were things that were going on externally to them
@@ohdaUtubeAs a former actress who is black I was just happy to see Stephen McKinley get a much bigger role than I’ve ever seen him get cast in before.
While I personally struggled finding auditions in Hollywood 15-20 years ago for a black woman to play anything other than a small bit role as the friend or girlfriend, this movie didn’t bother me when it came to diversity. It centered two female protagonists and the black woman I referred to before at the end was nice to see. Kirsten mentioned in interviews that she didn’t work for 2 years after The Power of the Dog because she was only sent scripts to play the ‘sad mom’, which is why she took this role.
The lead actor, Wagner Moura is from Salvador. He’s a minority and he survived.

Only in Hollywood would anyone wear the pink sunglasses much less a hick from the south, and men have rainbow colored hair with painted multicolor fingernails. Nothing controversial about the scene, the dude in the colored red glasses is ethnical cleansing, this happens during wars everywhere. We did not see anything of what Garland says about the President removing constitutional conventions or bombing civilians, there is mention of it but nothing shown. The film falls short of showing any essence other than vague references. And that girl with a Nikon FM2 camera that never ran out of film. I used to own one, the most you can carry is a 36 frame roll. During a firefight you would run out in a blink and have to change it. The CGI was also disappointing.
I didn’t really understand the choices he made I don’t really understand the choice he made about the guy wearing pink glasses if one just digs deeper in his mind the reason he’s showing men with painted colors, nails and colored hair because of war specially in something like a Civil War and everybody is going to fight. Fighting wouldn’t be exclusive to one group of people I would assume in any war like that there would be some sort of draft. The reason he kept it vague was because he didn’t want to spell it out for the audience. I think it was more than appropriate to write a film without having to partisan politics. I don’t think the movie was trying to make a easily consumable right versus wrong kind of film. I’m pretty sure the Director wanted to keep it vague because he wanted you to come to your own conclusion. you do have a point about that Nikon slr those things only hold 36 photos and the film run out. That’s exactly what I thought tonight when I watched it.
@@regalreegus Looking at the world with Rose tinted glasses. Do you get it know????

This movie was edited to make it less obviously anti-MAGA. It is clear that the President is supposed to be Trump and Plemmons is supposed to be a red neck Trump supporter. Neither of which is close to reality but it is what I expected.
It’s leftist propaganda. Pathetic to be honest. TX and Commiefornia joining sides just shows how out of touch or dishonest he is as a director and story teller.
here's a clear case of people seeing what they want to see
@@klnrklnr4433 I saw what was and you pretend what it wasn't.
I have not seen the film yet, but it seems plausible. But based on what I have read about the film, it seems that the Western Forces (who in your reading would be anti-Trump) are the ones starting the insurrection (whether justifiably or not I cannot say) and assembling in Charlottesville (which seems like a rather deliberate choice), which seems to scramble the "MAGA narrative" a bit (which for the purposes of the film is likely a good thing).
the president was suppose to be Obama. they mention dron strikes agains Americans. That's exactly what Obama was doing
The bad (conservative) guy has red glasses, so we can figure out that the red state guys see things through a red lens. Get it? Hint. I have never seen a conservative wear anything like that, but I have seen guys at PRIDE do it.
That was the sniper and the spotter. They represented the rainbow 🌈 people.

A pale shadow of the cronenbergs and romeros that came before.
I just watched this movie today 4-14-2024. I rate it a zero from 1-10. There was a lot of cussing, every cuss word there is I think. Next just a bunch of loud guns shooting. The whole point of the Western Forces being led by a right wing state and a left wing one was supposed to show that in this situation there’d be Americans on both sides who still believed in the constitution and wouldn’t stand for a dictator.
Joe Biden is the president in this movie.
Perhaps,it is Trump😂

It could be either Biden or Trump. And that's what makes this movie so brilliant.
@@fredgrumby You didn't hear what I said. The Civil War was started in reality by Democrats enslaving blacks. Alex Garland the director said that he gives clues. The president in the movie can't be Trump because Trump left the White House in real life. We don't know if Biden will do the same if he manages to steal the election with Dominion machines. Biden in real life has said he won't allow Trump into the White House. There has been indications he will use the 10,000 guards to continue to hold office. This movie is offensively lame.
Yup. The director is a moron for even writing Commiefornia and TX joining sides as TX isn’t a gun grabbing state and that’s the lefts platform. The left is basically full of traitors to the constitution and will use the government to disarm the rest of the country.
I absolutely agree. Anyone who says this movie is above a 1 doesn’t expect much.
Your mom is offensive and lame.
Very disappointed watching this. I felt like the story he told with the Jounalists could have been told for any war. They didn't try to do anything unique using the U.S. as a backdrop. They really didn't give you any background on the conflict and often the characters motivations were all over the place. It seems like a very generic movie trying to capitalize in divisions in the country to make a buck.

A very cordial interview.
It’ll be more like the English civil wars, than the Confederacy/Union civil war.
So think about Parliamentarians vs Royalists, or Roundheads & Cavaliers, but in the 21st century.
Probably Spanish Civil War is a better comparison.
Nah, I think the film does a pretty good job of showing how it would look, disregarding the make up of the factions. It really would just be a series of disorganised frenzies like the disintegration of Yugoslavia and all the conflicts that resulted from it.
