      Indeed, man and hands are quite something. And Manu is as well kind of revolutionary in finding new, eco friendly ways of touring. Look wat he posted on social media about his upcoming tour through his heimat Austria. facebook.com/watch/?v=525552198098372

      Manu Delago plays the hang drum

  • @9UaYXxB
    @9UaYXxB 8 лет назад +2

    I love the hang drums, but I think the repetitive impact they impose on the hands would be detrimental over time----that's not skin that one is pounding and slapping upon.

      +Swede McGuire I understand your concern. But I'm a classical singer myself and familiar with such maestros playing around me. The instrument "ghatam" has a similar playing pattern and the maestros' hands get accustomed to playing it over and over for years that the bones and muscles get hardened to handle the impact. They play for hours on end during concerts on a daily basis with no major problems. It's a bit like running a marathon; after a while the legs and lungs get used to it. Cheers :)

      Maybe.
      I developed osteo-arthritis (which I had to wear splints on both hands/wrists for 3 years to heal from) by the type of 'work' I do, which often involved working with vibrating tools on the job. The vibrating tools not only did work on objects, they did work on all of the joints in my hands---causing long term damages. What you do 'does' have an effect on your body, the body isn't impervious to impact injuries, far from it. Bones are hard...do they get 'harder', by bumping/thumping against impenetrable/unpliant surfaces....what is the evidence for that?
      And muscles 'get hardened' based upon impacts/strains placed upon them...what does that even mean? Strength might build based upon overcoming resistance, but percussion isn't muscular development, and that would be unrelated to the subject of joint injury.
      Repetitive abrupt impact against a hard surface is hazardous. It's best to avoid. And if it can't be avoided, at least recognizing the risks is a bare minimum of care...but the consequences will occur, there's no free lunch. The body recovers from injuries, when young, for a while (dependant on the extent and nature of the injuries), but long term that ability to recuperate diminishes.

    • @vivek1393

      +Swede McGuire Muscles and bones go through micro fractures when exposed to impact which are later healed, making them stronger and more resilient to impacts. There is a fine line between over working and practicing. I think it's up to each individual to recognize his/ her limits before ending up injured like how you're saying. Maybe talk to a 70 year old veteran ghatam player, mridangam player or even a marathon runner about how they still keep going without breaking bones or tearing tendons.

      Vivek Jayan
      And how many of them are there (these 70 year old athletes,... as an example), vs. their younger counterparts? Not so many, and a primary reason why is because so many are worn out. Surprise, surprise.
      You dont' want to sustain fractures, 'micro' or otherwise. They are bad news. A good bone is not a healed bone, a good bone is one that wasn't fractured to begin with. And I'm particularly speaking on the subject of joint damage---cartilage and tendons and bursa, you don't want to be beating these things up, after a while they will fail. That is reality. That's why there are orthopedic specialists around, because so many people have these problems and, once established, these problems rapidly degenerate (become intractable, chronic, irreversible). Then a person is simply trying to recover lost function, that's not good at all. Look around you, you are surrounded by people, particularly aged people, who are in various states of physical collapse---because they overtaxed their bodies capacities to mend.
