Mistakes Happen: Reglazing and Refiring a Sunflower Bowl to Fix a Thin Glaze!

- This video shows how to fix an issue that many potters have at some point in their pot-making. That is having a pot come out of the kiln with less than desired results, and reglazing and refiring it until it is successful. I have a bowl where I didn’t apply enough glaze, and had to refire it. I used Mayco Stroke and Coat, (which has a huge range from lowfire to cone 6, and even some go to cone 10.) The clay body is Standard 225 Brown Stoneware, with a 2% absorption at cone 6 and 12% shrinkage.
The imagery of the sunflowers was inspired by the situation happening now in Ukraine, in support of the Ukrainans living under attack, as the world rallies around them.

Thanks, Karan! I’m using Mayco Stroke and Coat with my students. I am trying a single firing technique for my first year because the kiln is at my house. This way I don’t have to transport as many times. It’s working well-So far❤️🎨

I would like to see more stroke and coat use and hear your opinion. Have been using it almost exclusively but since I am a relative newbie of 2 years, not sure what to think! Sometimes happy with results sometimes not

As a greenhorn potter I am so thrilled to find your wonderful videos Karan. Haven’t tried Coyote glazes but am very interested in trying them. This video is especially interesting Re: your glaze problem with the iron based color painted over the yellow. I have seen that before as a porcelain artist (read overglaze paints). One of the first things I learned was that yellow pigments are notorious for “eating” iron based colors (reds) and to be very careful to keep them separated in porcelain painting. I wonder if some of the pigments in pottery glazes are the same as the pigments we use in porcelain painting? Maybe try a test tile to see if that could be the problem? Great observations, Linda- thanks!! I will definitely be testing more to see what gives! That bowl was a very impromptu idea with no prework testing any combos! I’ve only recently started playing with iron oxide accents like that- so this was a great learning experience!
I’ve been watching all of your vids as I’ve taken a greater interest in pottery and clay. I have a question though, where or how do you make your slab sticks? I don’t like the press as it may have some inconsistencies
You can actually buy hardwood slab stick sets from ceramic suppliers! Or, have someone with a table saw cut you some sticks of specific thicknesses. I also found the jumbo paint stir sticks are perfect 1/4" sticks!!!

Was wondering if you have used the coyote underglaze - if you have, what is your opinion of it. I have used most all the other brands except theirs. Thank you - a beautiful bowl.
Love the Coyote underglazes! I’d say a bit more than the Amaco velvets. I find the colors go to cone 6 more dependably! I am slowly switching over my school inventory to Coyote over Amaco!

I just used the Coyote Underglazes for the first time, and I am in love. The Mazerine Blue is SO intense.
I had a pottery instructor tell me to paint the glazed pot with white glue so that my reglazing would stick better. Have you ever tried this? Would you recommend it?
Hi Susan- I’ve heard people mention this in the past. I’ve never personally done it because I’ve never found it necessary. I’m a little hesitant to add ingredients that could potentially burn and leave a slight residue within the glaze as a potential contamination. It may work perfectly well, but I’ve just found heating to do the trick for me! 🙂
