I love how in the latest issue, Carly is visibly horrified when told what Shockwave has in store for Cliff and is determined to save him, forgoing her need for revenge.
Very happy with carly's arc in the story Carly in the G1 cartoon was cool but she was never developed LIKE THIS she was more of a side character then in season 3 BOOM married to spike so I'm glad that a character such as this is given a second wind
@@DeltaTrion And given Spike's current diagnosis (facing possible permanent paralysis), it's more and more evident that in this series, Carly will be the human at the center of the action with Spike being more in the background. A nice reversal of the series.
@@DeltaTrion A Spike vid would be awesome. One thing I would love to see is maybe a commentary about how DWJ handles disability, or how he's handled Spike's disability. DWJ hasn't gone to either extreme. He acknowledges his current disability...Spike flat-out asked his doctor just to tell him if he was going to walk agin. But the 'beach' scenes, neither Spike or Beachcomber have mentioned his state at all, showing he's not just a "disability character." I'm very much hoping he'll eventually walk again, but story-wise, I'm getting more and more okay with the possibility of him being permanently disabled. It'd be a great (if tragic) take of his character (especially since Chip Chase was a major/minor character in the animated series).
Elita: The estranged “mother” Arcee: The estranged “daughter” Carly: The younger “sister” I put air quotes because while I don’t know how close Elita and Arcee are in age, those are pretty much the vibes they give off to me at this point. I think that’s what I really like most about Transformers and find fascinating. The relationship status between characters can be interpreted in many different ways because their concept of family/friendships is so loose and rarely made explicit across the continuities. Thus, allowing the fans to have a lot of freedom in interpretation. Even if characters refer to each other as “brothers” or “sisters”, it could more likely mean “brothers/sisters-in-arms”. Or comrades. Cybertronions are clearly a very social species (despite all the warfare), but it’s a uniquely social species.
5:11 Mn. Good stuff. 5:49 (and Spike he was just taken by Astrotrain haha) This comic also has my favorite representation of women so far in this franchise. I love that we've seen Arcee go from sweet to cold because of her love for her mentor. I don't think Prime Arcee really compares because we didn't get to see (more than a minute) of how she was before Cliff's death, but I'm also biased because I think mentorships are underrated. ALSO I'm just now noticing that this mirrors Carly trying to keep Spike out of battle until her dad was killed and she let loose. I'm also so happy Elita got to directly diss OP for leaving Cybertron; It especially hit hard with her claiming the war as his starting. They've had beef before, but this feels like a more humanized reaction than G1 Elita's not holding any grudge.
I am honestly glad that Elita-1 is getting this attention, she always seemed to get the end of the stick. Honestly, I feel the reason that her current harhs and weary attitude stems of her origins. This is more like a speculation territory, since Skybound is taking inspo from the G1, is possible that she suffered during her time as "Ariel", and what lead her to be remade as Elita-1, however, unless is said, she and Optimus seems close but couple-like. Amazing analysis!
Speaking of rage and hatred, I’m hoping Grimlock (if we get him in this) will be more like his FOC/Aligned or IDW counterparts. Hell, I’d like to see him as one of the few people who supports Optimus’s decision to defend Earth, even at the cost of Cybertron.
I get that some people prefer the more…simpleton Grimlock personality from G1, but I personally think IDW or Aligned continuity personalities would suit the Skybound story better.
Thank you so much! In so happy to see how much these videos are enjoyed. I’ve been having a ton of fun making them, and have about 6 more scheduled out
I'm not even going to lie, just rip my heart already. In all seriousness, I really appreciate your ability to convey the emotional turmoil that these characters are going through. Also, one of my favorite tropes, though I'm not sure if trope is the correct word, is seeing a character being composed one second only to "flip the switch" the second. The juxtaposition the two states is, when done well, always interesting to see.
Thank you for the compliment! It is really cool to see not only Arcee switch from noble warrior to merciless killer, but also the opposite for Carly. Her need for revenge is no longer her primary goal, but rather, saving Cliff.
I was slightly annoyed at some of the fandom reaction to Carly's vengeful turn. Given it's literally been days or weeks since she lost her father, of course, she's not going to be acting 100 percent to everyone's liking. In Issue #10 and #11, you saw Carly already making steps toward walking back that rage-filled persona - first by diffusing an interaction with Sparky's armed friends, and then her look of genuine fear when she discovered that Cliffjumper is likely on his way to suffering the same fate as Ultra Magnus. Daniel Warren Johnson has a great knack for making a small amount of text reveal a lot of detail. In the very beginning of the series, both Spike and Carly do not seem to be "shoo-in" candidates for their college of choice. Spike was too afraid to even bring up the subject to his dad about going to Berkeley to become an astronaut. And in one sentence, Carly talked about how her dad was working extra shifts to help Carly save up for art school. Just with that little detail, we saw that Carly's support base was super small, and her and her dad seemed to rely on each other to keep things afloat. Given the preview of Issue #12, it looks like Carly will be given a moment to shine. She's still imperfect (gloriously imperfect). She's chomping at the bits to be a part of this war, but Optimus and Arcee's hesitation about putting Carly in danger is justifiable. The violence that the Decepticons bring in this series is palatable - and human lives have quickly been extinguished, so, no matter how much courage Carly displays, it doesn't escape the fact that bringing her into a conflict like a full-fledged firefight between Shockwave, the Constructicons, and Soundwave will almost certainly make Carly more of a liability than asset. That said, if anyone who hasn't seen the preview for Issue #12 already knows, Carly doesn't care about the type of risk she poses and takes matters into her own hand when it comes to saving Cliffjumper. Relationship-note, it's going to be interesting to see how Carly and Spike interact whenever their paths cross again. Both have undergone some tremendous upheavals since they last were together.
I've got a much longer video coming next month! While it's not as insightful as these videos, it is a blast. That being said, my recap of Issues 1-12 will probably end up being a long one too
Here's something I noticed, Delta, Remember in Issue 5, once Arcee was revived and repaired, the way she ad Ratchet interacted for their reuinion, albiet short, was as if they've been close for a while now. While it can be said that they're just dear friends, the way it's drawn and written is as if DWJ is showing us there's more between them than meets the eye. But..once Ratchet died in Issue 9..if I got that right, thanks to Shockwave, not only did we have the flashbacks of the 1986 movie, But Arcee lost another one, the beloved medic of the Autobots. Ultra Magnus' return was really shocking, I assumed it was a different robot but no, it really is him, but he too can't catch a break because of Shockwave's deeds, So him running away once he saw the mad scientist, really made it a suprise, but something we'll dive in soon. Arcee wasn't just a young warrior who was under Magnus' care, but she's also a reflection of Carly, what Carly might've been had she kept her way of revenge. Optimus even tried to calm her down in Issue 11, reminding her of what happened, so it wasn't the first time she had that path walked on. She was a mirror to Carly, showing how revenge can affect someone, and now with the thought of Clifjumper, maybe Carly will finally be able to forgive Cliff, and herself. I also wonder how the tension between Optimus and Elita will be resolved, As you've said, Elita has been hardened because of the loss of her home, comrades and even possibly everyone else there. And with Optimus in Earth, yeah, she is mad at why he didn't do anything, yet maybe she didn't know that Optimus had been stuck inside the volcano for so long. But for Optimus, he's still composed, but showed that war affected him too, like when Jetfire was revived, although in only jet mode (Where was he in Issue 11, though?), he wanted him to rest, he really did. Ratchet? '86 again. And the Marvel comics style flashback of he and Ratchet..man. DWJ, your writing is amazing, I know he's leaving after Issue 24, so I hope the next writer will be able to run with the torch passed on. If you've read this whole thing, Delta, thannk you, maybe there are things I forgot to add, hahaha. Great video, by the way, and hopefully you'll get some rest every now and then. God bless you, and Jesus loves you.
One thing I was worried about is that the whole Carly and Cliffjumper partnership would be abomded in favor of Arcee, but I'm happy that it is seemingly not the case since Cliffjumper and Carly will probably reconcile when they reunite
Oh this? This is nothing. Sure, it's an intimate look at personal pain... but do you know what Shadowplay and Empurata mean? Have you seen what the DJD do? Why people can almost be reasonable saying, "Megatron was right"?
Whoops! Looks like I forgot to animate one of the comic panels in the video and left it full size... oh well
I love how in the latest issue, Carly is visibly horrified when told what Shockwave has in store for Cliff and is determined to save him, forgoing her need for revenge.
It was drawn so well! No words needed from her, you could feel her despair
“Revenge is not a valid motive, it’s an emotional response.”

It's been a breath of fresh air for sure. I was very surprised, but delighted, when Carly was given the more action oriented role instead of Spike.
