Gesso before stretching? Each to their own, I guess. But when you come to stretch on the frame the primed layer will be subject to stress when the canvas is put under tension. I'd advise stretching and then the gesso layers, myself. But whatever works for you.
If you're going to paint in acrylic, get a metal tray and put a sponge or wet paper towels in it. cover that with tracing paper and your paint will stay wet. Cover it with plastic wrap or put it in a plastic bag for later.
Very interesting insight especially Lowry's colour palette, thanks. I recall watching a documentary long ago that described how Lowry would prepare his canvasses by building up a rich thick patina of paint then leave it for several weeks to dry but unfortunately I cannot remember the details.
start small bro, buy cheap stuffs first, or save some money and buy quality stuff. She used calico, so it's kinda cheaper, and there are some quite good low price gesso (Maries brand, from china), or make your own gesso, there are a lot of tutorial about making your own gesso.
Three primary colours ( red, yellow, blue) plus black? and white, 2-3 brushes, buy old pictures from thrift shops and take out of frame give the board a couple coats of gesso and you get a free picture frame, add to your equipment every week or so and you are good to go for the price of a large pizza.
william morrison it’s not that she’s seen or not seen a Lowry close-up. The fact that she can’t even pronounce the word ‘Gesso’, is a give away for her to give up.
If you watch the BBC documentary in Lowrys own words he says he does not put much importance on perspective and yet you say he carefully considers it. Also Lowry never used mediums mixed in his paints I didn't watch the full video lost interest due to blatant lack of knowledge of Lowrys style or viewpoint.
If you had half the knowledge that you claim then you would realise the the painter was using Acrylics ( because quote: easier for beginners) and the thickening medium was to emulate the texture of oil paint so as to create a thick impasto effect which is not always easy when acrylics are used straight out of the tube. As for perspective, Lowry was acknowledged as an accomplished draughtsman so it is unlikely he would be bothered worrying about perspective lines or vanishing points while sketching out paintings. A cursory glance at any of his paintings makes it evident that he had that aspect completely under control.
Im doung a painting on board that soneone requested. Called out of the mill. Ir will he 2 foot by 20 inch with oil. Pray for Jesus christ to aid me and for God to help me with this.
If I ever wanted to paint like an artist and I had to pick one to emulate, the very, very ladt one Id ever try to imitate would be L.S. Lowry. Utter cack.

How incredibly thorough - Thanks for taking the time and effort to produce this.

Lowry didn't use any medium mixed with his paint, so if you want to "paint like Lowry", then don't use medium.
he painted with oil. she suggests using medium within the context of using acrylic because it can be a cheaper substitute experience
don't think you have seen a lowry close-up

Relax Jose Martinez
the moment you don't use the same materials the painter used, you are not painting like them

Where are the phones?
working in acrylics is not easier!!
to use the word naïve about an artist is to put them down...so I don't agree !! I don't even like the word primitive...
Im doung a painting on board that soneone requested. Called out of the mill. Ir will he 2 foot by 20 inch with oil. Pray for Jesus christ to aid me and for God to help me with this.
As soon as she mispronounce the word ‘Gesso’, I switched off.
You just made my day!

How to give serious painters a bad name! And, by the way, when you stretch a canvas, you start from the MIDDLE of each side; NOT as shown.
I believe the tutorial was aimed at beginners, hence the use of acrylics and thickening medium rather than jumping in with artist quality oils.
