The Gayatri Mantra is one of the oldest and most powerful of the Sanskrit mantras.The mantra has its origin in the Sanskrit phrase,'Gayantam Triyate iti' which refers to that mantra which rescues the chanter from all adverse situations that may lead to mortality. Goddess Gayatri is also called the Veda Mata or the mother of the vedas - Rig, Yajur, Saam and Atharva. Recitation of the Gayatri Mantra is preceded by the syllable 'Om', followed by 'Bhur Bhuva Swaha', which is collectively known as 'Mahavyahrti', which means great utterance.

I use to sing/chant this exact version of the Gayatri mantra to the wild Mice that i am feeding every night, haha. It actually made a quite scary difference, as when i was fully quiet they were mostly scared/fearful but as soon as i started chanting this in a low voice with my normal "super kind" intention they seemed more disturbed by me talking rather than actual Fear, but when they eat and turn their head looking straight at me while eating there is this "Strange Gaze" really, haha

1. When u say it loudly (less effective)
2. When you just utter words but don't produce sound. (Medium)
3. When u chant Mantra with full concentration and devotion in mind without even moving tounge or lips (highly effective but this technique is difficult, a normal person can't concentrate in first try)

So, there are no many versions of this mantra, there is the only one that is original, in Sanscrit. All the others probably originate from the version of chanting, that is, the melody of singing. But only one is totally metrically correct.

This chanting is performed by the real Brahmins, the cast of priests, so they know the best how this mantra should be chanted.

When i hear this mantra every day at 4 a. m i remember the word of Sri Krishna in the holy Gita that among the mantras He is Sri Gayatri Mantra and even foreign scholars agreed that this is the most positive energy mantra, and broad cast in their media and schools. Wake up early is very simple. I stop my mb. 9 p. m. and finish dinner. Chant Om Nama Shivaya mantra 108 times and go to bed within 10. p. m. 5 yrs back i had set alarm at 4.A.M and now i dont need . As we believe 3 to 6 A. M. when the world sleeps ones prayer will be more effective (Divine Time). My Bramin friend (82 years ) also practice like this. (Generally Hindu Temples open at 3 A.M for public called Subrabata Darshan for whole year.) afternoon 1hour sleep and 7 hour sleep enough for a person. Early to bed and early from bed and practice makes a person perfect. Believe in these 2 points. Also all Hindus should be proud that NASA'S research on SUN planet revealed that it emanates the sound OM non-stop. Then imagine the power of OM mantra. ( Any Mantra minimum 108 times chanting is better.) Even in my routine job i chant mentally mantras. May God Bless ur family. (Om Dum Durga Namaha. ) The most poweful mantra which protect one from all negative effects of Kaliyuga, + Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam +Sri Aditya Hrydyam etc. also no to Alcohal, Drugs, and Non-Veg. I used to chant the Gayatri Mantra in a fast manner or listen to Gayatri Mantras sung by Anuradha Paudwal. Now I understand that the Gayatri Mantra has to be chanted aloud to get the benefit of the sound vibrations. This presentation looks ideal to chant with and bring me the needed knowledge.

It's curious how some people still think of the Creator as a he. It must be very flattering to male narcissism, but, of course, it has nothing to do with the real meaning and spirit of the profoundest (and in my view closest to the truth) Vedic tradition and (I dare say) knowledge.

Sexes are only applicable to physical bodies and then 2 or 3 other finer bodies in which you as a soul will dwell and then shed them (ethir, emotional, mental etc) the way you dwell in and shed a physical body; until it is time to get reincarnated and you receive a new physical body again. So a soul is sexless, a soul is a reflection of God so God is sexless, the closest term you can think of is It, but because It is of an inanimate nature or applied to animals it cannot be applied to God who is Life in its purest essence. So usually in most religions God is referred to as He due to the fact that most cultures are patriarchal, although God is not a he or she, God is God.

Iniyavel Sugumar I appreciate your attempt to accommodate our own sexual (and biologically normative and necessary) forms, but doing so using a masculine-gendered noun in English (I don't know what gender Arthanaareeswarar is in the language the term comes from, which I suppose is Sanskrit) cannot do justice to Reality (or to the world of Creation for that matter). I do believe in the existence of the ultimate Divine Being but I think we make a potentially serious and avoidable error in using the word God as a substitute for Divine Being -- and worshipping the Divine Being in any sexualized form (either female or male, or in a hermaphroditic combination of both sexual traits). What we call God (a masculine-gendered noun) is only an imperfect articulation and conceptualization of the Divine Being, who exists but who is beyond the sexual (biologically necessary) forms and categories, and who thus doesn't "accommodate" any two halves because that ultimate Reality which subtends the manifest world(s) and the very field(s) of manifestation and creation is completely and utterly beyond any such categories (without, however, being "beyond good and evil" because the Divine Being is intrinsically good and is the ultimate guarantor of both goodness and truth as well as rationality itself). Thus, as a woman and a feminist, while I must continue to object to any attempt to limit our understanding and our attempt to honour the Divine Being by identifiying it with the Gods of our religions (which is what we mean when we say "God"), I cannot accept the contemporary attempts to bring back to life the concept and the worship of the Goddess either (which is merely a deification of women and also a deification of nature conceptualized as female, something we really ought to have realized by now is not only a senseless and irrational thing to do but also potentially quite dangerous because misleading).
Let me try to say it this way: the spiritual traditions of the Indian subcontinent have given the world two extermely important concepts. One is the trinitarian construct (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva), which, however, and quite obviously since each of the three is conceptualized in a male-gendered form, remains implicated in and itself limited by the very limitations of patriarchal thought and patriarchy as a system of life practises. The other is almost impossible to articulate or experience except through the highly sophisticated tradition of spiritual wisdom and the actual (yogic and other) practises associated with it. The trinitarianism found in both Hinduism and Christianity is, in my view, best understood and re-articulated in purely conceptual (non-reifying) terms. Ultimately, the Divine Being is not segmented or separable into three persons, etc. and is in that respect one, although we may just as well (or even better, more appropriately) represent it by using the third epochal concept your part of the world has given us, which is the mathematical concept of the Zero (also thought of as the Void). What we call the void is only the appearance of the nihil, of nothingness; beyond the appearance of the void, of the nihil, is "where" we find Ultimate Reality, i.e. the Divine Being.

But i think any mantra in any language when chanted with devotion will give this effect.... Indian yogis were probably first among equals to do that.... This mantra will cure anxiety and panic.. the effect will be more when chanted in the mind ( which you may do after some time of listening). Sit in a mediating posture, chant in the mind 108 times in the morning, 32 times during noon, 64 times in the evening.. and then see the effect.

I love this mantra, it brings me so much calm centered-ness. At least until my husband decides that he simply must interrupt my chanting to bask in the glow of my good mood and get my loving attention. Having these profound feelings still active within me I can calmly let him know how I feel about his self centered attitude and demanding my hard won time when not caring for everyone else in the house. I turn the chant back on and it’s working, my anger fades away again. Blessed be!
