  • The Canon Demi EE17 is one of the premier half-frame cameras. I'll take a look at the camera and some of the great photographs that people are taking with it. Here are the photography credits below:Misster Pissta: www.flickr.com...

    That is an original advantage coming from cameras which were originally intended to save costs on buying rolls by doubling their normal photo count. The Demi EE 17 is a true beauty and a competent shooter no doubt.

    I bought my Demi EE17 at the PX at Cu Chi Base Camp in South Vietnam in 1968, and I carried it, wrapped in plastic, for the eight months of my combat tour with the 25th Infantry Division. It was small and had that great feature of taking 72 photos on a single role of 35mm film. I continued to use the camera into the 1970s when I bought my first auto focus point and shooter. I put it away. Thirty years later I tried to find a battery for the Canon and was told there was no available equivalent to the now unavailable original battery. From this thread I've learned that perhaps there is a battery that works in this camera. Can anyone give me information on such a battery? The original was a mercury button battery, 1.3 volts.

      It looks like the Wein Cell MRB625 would work as a replacement. It's a zinc/air battery and 1.35 volts.
      There are also alkaline and silver-oxide replacements, but they're 1.5-1.55 volts and will give an inaccurate reading on the meter. My understanding is that they'll still work, but you'll need to compensate for them underexposing.
      I don't have any personal experience with any of these batteries, so I can't say for absolute certain that they'll work.

      Man, I would love to see some of the pictures you made in Nam. Is there anywhere I could see them?

    All the photos shown were soft, blurry or out of focus? I have seen very sharp and great pictures with other half-frame cameras. Is it this camera or you picked photos of this style?

      It could be out of focus but one issue is that you need to zoom in more because the frame is smaller and that can make it look blurry. An equivalent would be showing two low res movies at once on a HD TV.

    Weird this camera isn't a rangefinder... what's that circular window do then (the one above the lens)?

      I think it's part of the light meter. i call cameras like this "rangeguessers"

    One thing that's confusing me about this camera: Let's say I go full manual, and set the aperture to 1.7... at this point do I want to adjust the shutter speed so the needle reads f/1.7? That's what I'm thinking so far. I noticed that the needle doesn't move when I adjust the aperture, so it seems like regardless of aperture, it's just telling you what the aperture SHOULD be set at if you're fully manual, or WILL BE set at if you go to auto. Is this thinking correct? Let me know. Thanks

      +Charles J Gartner Just read the manual, bit.ly/1SpeSVY, your thinking is on point. The needle is showing you what aperture you should use, make sure you have the right batteries. Also auto controls aperture. Good question!

    I stumbled across your video. I think I understand the half part in regards to half the film frame exposure od a 35mm. I am curious to know do you also double the marked focal mm to know it's true 35mm focal equivalent?

    • @ShawneeUnion
      @ShawneeUnion  5 лет назад

      No need to double the focal length, it’s adjusted to shoot at what feels like 35mm.

    hi
    what flash is compatible for the ee17? thanks!

    • @ShawneeUnion
      @ShawneeUnion  9 лет назад +2

      +Alphae Marfa old manual flashes. Newer ones would be overkill but could work. You need to use them in manual mode since this camera is so old, and use Guide Numbers to help you get the right power.

    are people in the photography world really THAT uncreative: You give someone a normal 35mm and I'd say 95 percent of the shots are "landscape" framing... give someone this canon halfframe where holding it normal it gives you "portrait" style framing, and 95 percent of people will shoot portrait framing. Seriously, not one of the example shots showed someone creative enough to get a horizontal image? Weird.
