As someone who's never played a Duke Nukem game in her life, it seems like there are SO many parts of this game that WOULD be really cool and fun, but each one of them was f*cked up in some way or another.
"Do you want a game where your character beats up aliens with his bare fists?" Yeah! "Do you want to use nothing BUT your fists for the first 30 minutes of a first-person *_shooter_* ?" No!
"Do you want to have access to a vast arsenal of weapons?" Yeah! "Do you only want to have two inventory slots, which (due to the way the game is designed) will require you to use only one for most of the game?" No!
"Do you want a section of the game where you shrink down really small and drive a toy car like a dune buggy?" Yeah! "Do you want it to be in a game with such a bad physics engine that you crash every 5 seconds?" No!
"Do you want a game with an interactive whiteboard that lets you write/draw whatever funny stuff you want?" Yeah! "Do you want the game to straight-up not tell you how to exit, and not even use one of the first buttons you'd think of to do it?" No!
It almost seems like no part of the game was designed around any other part. Like two people each had an idea, and they were implemented at the same time without thought to how they'd interact with each other. Either that or they'd have half an idea and forget to finish it-and the very idea that a game which was developed for 14 years could have ANY part of it be unfinished is laughable.

I remember devs doing an interview at one point and they said something along the lines of they dreaded whenever a new FPS came out cause they knew that the head guy would come in and demand that htey find a way to shove it into their game... even making a joke that to get it finished they need to lock him in a room with no access to video games.
He wanted it not just to be a good game but the best game ever with literally everything people loved from other games in it... which is why it's a massive bloated mess of ideas and also why you kinda see the different striations of FPS tropes as you progress through the game... this was popular so we make this type of level... and then the horror fps was popular so we make a kinda body horror section and etc. etc.
The fact you could only carry two guns was one of my biggest issues when I first played it.. yeah it's more "Realistic" to have a limit on how many guns you can carry but... it's Duke Nukem... he is literally a parody of the late 80's action movie stars... him lugging around an entire arsenal of weapons is part of the joke and who he is....
I also wish they played with the weapons he did get more too... they're supposed to be over the top and insane like the multiple barrelled chain gun or the massive two armed rocket launcher... but they're all pretty standard style guns... or rockets.

To quote Shigeru Miyamoto, "A delayed game will eventually be good, but a rushed game will forever be bad." No pun intended. Not only is Duke Nukem Forever delayed, it's also been rushed. Duke Nukem Forever is such an epic failure that it singlehandedly killed the franchise. The problem was that it's a 90s computer game that dated itself the moment it was released. What's more is that the humor is very dated and is not suitable for today's PC world. PC as in "politically correct". Bottom line: Duke Nukem Forever wasn't worth the wait. This game was 15 years in the making and it never lived up to the hype. The 2001 demo I've heard was better than the final product. That 2001 demo is what Duke Nukem Forever should've been.

If I'm interpreting the info from the Duke4Ever Museum site and developer commentaries correctly, the 2001 version was almost finished by 2002 but the lead director, George Broussard, mandated the team to add dynamic lighting and shadows because of that Doom 3 E3 demo from the same year, messing everything up and having to scrap the whole thing they spent 3 years doing (1999-2002).
The result of that mess-up is another iteration of DNF that lasted from 2003-2006 and then THAT got scrapped as well for the 2007-2011 build, the one we eventually got, and THAT didn't escape unscathed either.
The leaked world chart and bits and pieces from the documents from 2008 show that the levels that were in the DLC were in the base game, and instead of Dylan, we would've had Bombshell, and you could play as her too. The stripper who gives Duke a lapdance in Duke's Titty City was actually also meant to be Bombshell as well. AND the game was intended to end with General Graves sacrificing himself to save both Duke and Bombshell and then having to fight the Octaking instead of the Cycloid Emperor again. The final version had to scrap half of it and since the old story wouldn't make sense anymore, they made one up on the spot, no matter how nonsensical, and that's BEFORE Gearbox stepped in.
Game dev is messy business, especially when the team behind it had outdated mentality. Their insistence on being the latest and greatest despite the inexperience, working on multiple games at once, and small team size... those factors ultimately killed old 3D Realms and, by extension, the whole Duke Nukem franchise.
At least Max Payne and Prey ended up good.

The most depressingly ironic part of this is that the leaked 2001 build shows if they had just stuck to their guns and maybe increased the texture resolution across the board, and polygon count of environment/prop and character models, they would've released a game that was pretty ahead of the curve for 2001 standards. That fully dynamic shattering glass stuff is a rare sight even in modern games.
But they kept stupidly chasing trends from other games, like the Doom 3 lighting model you mentioned, or regenerating health and 2-weapon limit from Halo, mounted turret sections from COD, etc. which all ended up filling the game with such dated mechanics and design that come 2011 when Gearbox lifts Forever's limp corpse and props it up with poles just barely good enough to throw it out the door and onto the market, it felt like it was already a decade behind the curve at that point.
Let me put it this way, both the 2001 version and the final 2011 version feel like a game from 2004.

@@homersimpson8955 I woldn't say it's the best Duke Nukem game or that it was enjoyable, but it's not quite as bad as most reviewers make it to be.
I'm not a massive fan of recent FPS so maybe it helps that my references for FPS is pretty much the "3D" triplet, so any improvement over that style is good in my book.
I don't think DNF is a good game, but not a bad one either. It stands in the middle, good enough to enjoy your time playing it, not enough to make you go "Hey I'm gonna play it again"
I guess if you have played more recent FPS, it can be rough, and not everyone is gonna like the quite dated humour. But heh, that part to me is the hallmark of Duke Nukem, that over the top 90's badass hero attitude, with all the "wrong" things attached to it.

@@jakekaywell5972 The worst, it wasn't a bad car at all. Like the DMC (the car) it was hype a lot but the underpower engine didn't meet the expectation of the customers.

Nah, it was bad as a shooter too.
There were many problems, but two weapon limit ruined the game on it's own.

I miss end bosses where it was just you and them. Now in newer games it’s an end boss and every enemy you encountered in the game.

31:52 That build's been leaked. There's the Duke Nukem Restoration Project too.
