Hosted an Appalachian trail thru hiker here in the states last year, he was from New Zealand and had a lot of good things to say about this trail, it looks absolutely amazing

Nice. Nz tracks are.tough, and weather can be hail or snow.in summer... helps to have good cold weather gear, breathable.overmitts etc.

I got to vizit NZ for a few weeks in 2005. Many good reasons to visit again, but now I see a really big reason to do it.

Excellent. Thanks for sharing that. I did it in 2017/18 and watching that makes me so want to go again. Mind you you seem to have had nicer weather than me! How did you do the plotter on the map?

Thanks! It was tricky, I had to learn a bit of animation basics.

North or South island, which one is the most beautiful? I already know it for myself:)

Hi Dylan. Great video! Did TA in 2015/16 in 88 days. Just after finishing AT some month before. Your map looks amazing. Would there be a chance to get it from you so that I could print it out for myself? Best regards Marc aka 10-Speed

Hi Marc! I hiked in 2015/16 too, maybe we crossed paths? The map was made by a talented friend of mine with an agreement to share the proceeds of any sales, so I'd rather not distribute the image without his permission. Unfortunately I'm not selling them right now, sorry. Happy trails!

I'll be in NZ in a few months and really want to hike the Te Araroa, but not all of it... Would you recommend the north or south island part more?
I really like the nature in the north, but I heard that there you hike a street many times instead of a path... Is that true? How many kms did you really have to use the street approximately? And how many at once?
How difficult is the south islands part? I have a decade of hiking experience from the scouts, would that be sufficient? And what is the nature like?

If you are only going to hike one island, I would recommend the South Island. There is much less road walking than the North Island, but there is still some. I don't remember exactly numbers. If you're not too concerned about hiking the entire path, I would recommend hitchhiking through the parts with roads and also leaving the trail to go hike other areas in New Zealand. The Abel Tasman track, the Kepler Track, and the Routeburn track are all gorgeous but they are not on Te Araroa. If you have any time on the North Island, I would recommend the Tongariro crossing.
I don't know much about Scouts, but the terrain in NZ can be very difficult at times. You need to have strong navigation skills and appropriate gear for cold and wet weather. There is not always a 'trail', sometimes you are travelling cross-country.
New Zealand is beautiful though, enjoy your trip!

Hi there, that video was posted accidentally to my account. My brother and I used to share an account and I guess he still had access. I never saw the comment. Sorry about the mix-up.
