Great video. It confirms what maybe many of us are thinking now, this Midi Mapping function has made the CC121 redundant? Hence why it has been discontinued! I have a CC121, only bought last year, however, I am now able to use my other MIDI Controllers and map them in Cubase. This should attract new users now who maybe were frustrated at the limited options previously of finding a MIDI controller to work in Cubase. So well done Steinberg. You have nailed it!
That's an amazing video thank you so much brought me closer to regulating my MIDI set-up. I was wonder could PLEASE help out in details of how to assign CC1 CC11 and so on from libraries to faders on midi controller that's the only thing left so I can start working. didn't quite get from this video how you programed it IN to your controller 16:39. thank you very much
Thanks so much! Thanks to your video I was finally able to set up my Maschine Studio for proper use with Cubase. Funny enough I found that assigning Start to a button with the intention to pause on second press, you need to set Toggle to "off", not "on". Kinda counterintuitive but it works. The only thing I haven't found out yet is how I can use the jog wheel to move the cursor/marker forward/backward. Apparently that is not possible?
x-touch mini contoller has 2 layers, you can assign both layers by adding more buttons and assigning them, then switching layers on the controller, outputs seperate cc.. .example, fader as filter cutoff on layer 1, fader as channel volume on layer 2.
I have a lot of faders and Knobs in my midi controller, but I can only add up to 8 qc options, and I would like to also control volume and other options in the plug ins
Unfortunately, this doesn't work with motorised faders (for example on mixing consoles) - The faders lock up as Cubase receives and sends the midi messages, and end up fighting themselves. In 12.10, Steinberg introduced a check box that can disable sending messages back to the hardware, but who'd want a bunch of faders that don't return to where they should be when you rewind, or follow fader moves etc. Will be good when it works though! Looking forward to it.
Hi John! I'm thankful for your Cubase videos. Are really helpful. May I ask... With the Midi Remote Mapping, you can assign different parameters for each of your virtual instruments/samplers ect? Or the "expression" fader at your example will act always & only to this specific CC for all your instruments? And one more... What's the difference vs midi learn? I mean practical. Why not to use the midi learn? (of course when midi learn works, cause sometimes it doesn't...). Thanks 👍 once again!
Thanks for watching, I'm glad I can help! MIDI learn is just a quick way to script a controller to move a parameter with controllers where otherwise you wouldn't want a permanent knob or fader to do that, ex. a popular choice is "Cutoff". I will be making an updated video on the MIDI Mapping and other features for tomorrow, be on the look out for that and hopefully it can answer more of your questions. Hope this helps!
Hi John, thx for this video. I have nanokontrol2 just like you do so. But when I have upgraded to Cubase 12, I have raalized that Cubase has automatically assigned my nanokontrol 2's faders. I would like to assign, for example the first vertical fader to CC1, but I could not find out how to do that, of course i need to assign it as default, not just for that instance of kontakt, but for each Kontakt I add in the project. Could you please help me on this?
Nice, concise video. I look forward to seeing others from you. Just a quick question: I presume it's possible to disable the remote MIDI so that you can access the original controls on the keyboard when you want to use it say, as a standalone synth fed by a MIDI score to create an audio feed back to an audio channel. It's an old Korg X50 but has lots of buttons so should be really useful in the context you showed here.
Thank u so much for this informative video , i have a problem that when i open the cubase 12 the nanokontrol 2 it works fine for transport button and 1st fader is assigned for dynamics and last one assigned for kontact volume , when i try no assign the 2nd fader for vibato , i lose all the before mentioned and like an error happen
Hi. Thnx for your video! When I change or learn the knob parameter to my personal setup, How can I save with the plugin? Do I have to repeat this action if I load this plugin on other project or other track?
Great question, in my experience you'd have to do that on a per project basis. But, if you save the preset on the plugin it may also save the MIDI learn. That might be a great research project, try it out and let me know! I will post future findings as well!

Thanks for making this informative video! Question: I have a touchscreen that has a bunch of Cubase commands where a lot of them aren’t connected properly and I would like to remap everything ala your video, however In that same touchscreen lemur page, I also have Composer tools pro. Is it possible to just remap some of it, meaning all the Cubase commands, but leave Composer tools unaffected? Or the second I start remapping, will it override the Composer tools commands?
Hi Christopher, In theory, yes you can just leave out the things you don't want mapped and it should worked as you programmed it. Then the things you do map will be overwritten and can be used in Cubase. I do not have personal experience with lemur or composer tools pro, but based on my research and testing of different MIDI controllers it seems to work just fine. Let me know how it goes!
I don't see a way to import/export individualized mapping that goes BEYOND the Focus Quick controls like we had in the Generic Remote. That means I'm losing my customized maps (except for the focus QC) for a new project. I spend the time to set up 24 controls, then go to a new project--gone.... Aaargh.
I would say have a variety of templates depending on what you are working on. Just takes a few to setup, but it will streamline your workflow if things are already setup before hand. Hope this helps, good luck!
@@Johnmunstudios Sorry to belabor the point: Most of my work is sound design, so I'm spending a couple hours on a particular sound program with fiddly little knobs that I would have to manipulate with a rock (aka mouse) until I perfect it, (then use it as an instrument in a composition with the automation in the QC's). EG, when I can use my imported generic remote presets for the MC24 controller, I can easily adjust settings with my knobs rather than struggle with the mouse during that long sound design process, and not only have a great deal more comfort but also more exact settings. Setting up templates for each of the sound design programs combined with the other plugins I use would be a huge task and pretty nonfunctional for doing sound design. Fine for the composition process-- I do use templates in other ways, but not sound design, so I'm comfortable and happy with their function. Just not for this... THanks for your thoughts, tho. Jewel
Hello! Not sure what happened there, but trying replugging in the MIDI Keyboard, or switching it on and off. If that doesn't work try a factory reset: Press and hold the Octave up + Octave down buttons. While still holding the Octave up + Octave down buttons, turn on the Impact. Release both Octave buttons after 2 seconds. I hope this helps! 🙏🏽
Great tutorial! I'm attempting to repurpose a Tascam US 428 using the mapping tool in Cubase 12. I assume due to its age was dropped from the list of supported devices. Most things are working fine but I have an issue with faders moving only when the specific track is selected. Once selected any/all faders move the selected channel volume up and down. Also, I can't move multiple faders at once. Is this due to a Cubase setting, midi setting or rather my selection in the mapping tool? I chose Volume under Selected track. Thank you in advance.
It should work because I have it working on 12. I would make that adjustment in the Korg editor before using the remote mapping in Cubase. Hope this helps!
@@Johnmunstudios Thanks. I did the mapping in the Korg editor. Tested it on C-11. It works without problem. It is not working on C-12. The fader are going to VST parameters instead. I think I have issues with understanding the Remote MIDI mapping to get the 2 first fader to CC1 and CC1. When I use Modulation on my Key boadr it works perfectly too,
The best controller for Cubase 12 - after the production of the Steinberg CC121 has ceased - for me is the PreSonus FaderPort V2 (one fader) together with the new version (23.08.2023) of the midi remote script written by Werner Mairegger with the extensions written by Christian Oestmann. The new version of this script can be found in the Cubase Steinberg Forum under the topic "PreSonus FaderPort 2 (2018) midi remote script". Actually, the script can do more than what the CC121 was able to do, because so far 90 functions have been realized with the script: 27 functions for each track/channel, 19 functions for transport, 23 functions for navigation and editing and 21 other functions. And all this I get for only about 170 Euros for the Controller which is compact and very ergonomic. :-)
..i just tried to map my oxygen pro..it wont work, something is totally wrong..my knobs are acting like a switch not as a knob..my faders are connected but they are not moving anything in cubase 12...its so frustrating, in logic i did the mapping in 2 minutes and everything works perfect...🙁..any help?
Hello John, I have tried to assign one of my pads to open my VST instrument (for ex. Retrologue) but when I start to play on my keyboards where my VST pad it is, I have problem: on keyboard I have same function as on pad. It means I can't play because all the time VST window be activated during my playing. How can I divide it, Cubase functions and my keyboard notes on MIDI controller?
x touch mini has 2 layers activated by a button. in cubase you create more buttons and assign the functions. the controller outputs the 2 layers seperate. assume shift feature is the same thing.
Hi Sergio, In order for the impact LX to work properly as a controller is by deleting any presets you may have made in the keyboard it self. I recommend doing a factory reset on the device and trying again after. The keyboard will override any incoming messages if you have the keyboards pre mapped. This did occur to me once because I own the LX88+ and it solved the problem. These are the steps to doing a factory reset. 1) Turn the Impact off. 2) Hold both Octave buttons while turning the Impact back on. 3) The display will show the firmware version number, followed by 8.8. and then it will return to normal operation. 4) Release the Octave buttons. I hope this helps! 🙏🏽
In realtà io credo che il problema sia che il Cubase legga la LX già come un midi remote. Per dirne una ora io non riesco a mappare i tasti funzione TRANSPORT mentre prima ci riuscivo. Così come ora invece riesco a mappare i pads. Credimi sto impazzendo
@@Johnmunstudios ho provato a fare un factory reset ma ogni volta che faccio ripartire Cubase la tastiera si setta per la cominucazione nativa con ubase. Hi. I am Dennys. I need HELP! I am very dumb concerning electronic equipment! Your Video is very informative! However, I could not set my J L Cooper Fader Master Professional MIDI Automation Controller. Cubase12 has JL Cooper listed but does not have my MIDI controller on its list. So, I filled manually the empty fields. (I hope that my name on the Script field works because I was not sure if that was supposed to be filled with a MIDI/electronic/Software protocol I had to enter or download. Anyway, the easy part of touching the sliders and buttons and being recognized immediately by CubasePro12 did not work. Only the generic red button showed up, which I could change it into a slider or a knob. This only slider in Cubase did not move when I move any of my MIDI controller sliders. So, I think that there is no communication going on between my controller and Cubase. John, if you read this message and have time to give me an answer on what I should do, or check, I appreciate your BIG HELP. BTW, I read the little manual provided by my J L Cooper Fader Master and it does not say anything about this problem. Also, do you teach online or know anyone who does it? Let me know. Thanks a millions.
Hi Dennys! I do have a question. Do you have a driver, or a software that came with your MIDI controller that allows you to assign the buttons and faders? If so, Cubase does not override already programmed buttons. Try creating an empty preset or try and see if you can bypass any programmed buttons and faders. Try this and if it doesn't work, we can try something else! If you want a more one-on-one help you can sign up for consultations at: calendly.com/johnmunstudios
I think he said that because Reaper has had this functionality for a while. What I didn't catch in the video is if I can assign controls depending on the vst in focus. To the OP, check out Realearn, it does exactly this.

Is it possible to just remap some of it, meaning all the Cubase commands, but leave Composer tools unaffected? Or the second I start remapping, will it override the Composer tools commands?
Hi Christopher,
In theory, yes you can just leave out the things you don't want mapped and it should worked as you programmed it.
Aaargh.
Save as a template!!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Sorry, I use different setups constantly…templates are not the answer
Jewel
Are you still limited to 8 QC(as in quick control) like the previous version? This is a disappointment if it's the case.
As I’ve seen so far, yes there is only 8QCs.
@@Johnmunstudios OK. Thanks.
Thanks for making sense of this jungle of new information 😊 which would drive somebody crazy who is new to it like me
Hello, I have the same keyboard as you, but Cubase dosen't recognize the transport buttons. Any ideas?
Hello!
Not sure what happened there, but trying replugging in the MIDI Keyboard, or switching it on and off.
If that doesn't work try a factory reset:
Press and hold the Octave up + Octave down buttons.
THANK YOU! Brian is happy now thanks to you :)
John feels great knowing Brian’s happy! 😁🙏🏽
@@Johnmunstudios but Brian not that happy anyways bc knobs not working as they should.
Thanks. I have nanoKontrol2. I want to use Fader 1 for CC11 and Fader 2 for CC1. I could do that on C11 but cannot on c12. Can it be done?
Can I create a midimapping without link it with an external hardware and use it with mouse exclusively?
I don’t think that’s possible, what you can do is map macros on mouses if it’s programmable.
@@Johnmunstudios ok thanks!
I made a layout but the controller doesnt respond to the mapping assistant. My keyboard works though..
Why couldn't they add the Nektar P6?
How do you save the script
Stay tuned for an updated video tomorrow!
If a controller has a shift function so buttons can have two commands, does this work with this?
That’s a great question, would need to try that out I’m not sure!
x touch mini has 2 layers activated by a button. in cubase you create more buttons and assign the functions. the controller outputs the 2 layers seperate. assume shift feature is the same thing.
Sir Please iam using nektar Lx88 i need remote Control for all my bottons and faders Thank you
Hi Sergio,
In order for the impact LX to work properly as a controller is by deleting any presets you may have made in the keyboard it self.
Così come ora invece riesco a mappare i pads. Credimi sto impazzendo
If you want a more one-on-one help you can sign up for consultations at:

How to erase controller from cubase 12. Tried to use my XP60 as controller...wont work. How do I erase it?
I found only option, that you can disable it, not erase
Stay tuned for tomorrow's video, I will be answering your question!
Thank God for Reaper!
@Nathaniel Walker Don't get mad 😂
I think he said that because Reaper has had this functionality for a while. What I didn't catch in the video is if I can assign controls depending on the vst in focus. To the OP, check out Realearn, it does exactly this.
@@joetowers4804 Exactly. And it's MUCH more convenient, as are most of Reaper's features. Steinberg loves to make things unnecessarily complicated.
yep got to say after a few days using new cubase features and then going back to reaper iam finding more functions in reaper and easyier to use, agree that cubase is complicated /bad interface in parts.will check out realearn see what else it can do.
If ONLY it was possible to map SAMPLE START AND SAMPLE END ...IN GROOVE AGENT 5 !!!!
it does not work with the komplete m32
learning feature isnt working for my oxygen pro mini. when i lay a fader or knob down and then move it for it to map, it only works 2 out of 10 times so i cant map my full midi. it recognized 1 out of 4 faders, restarted the process and now it doesnt recognize any. no transpose buttons, knobs.. i fucking hate cubase. its been a piece of shit ever since i started using it. ableton, fl studio, reason, none of them give me problems. i cant make music in cubase because im busy fucking with getting shit to work.
You can't map CC to a midi remote, such as mod wheel CC. Thats a huge downside.
aLL OF YOU ARE SAYING HOW EASY THIS IS AND ITS NOT......keystation 88 by M-Audio and none of this will work...
This CC mapping is an issue... I can't sit around programming CC for each plugin... The CC mapping is literally the speed factor. If we have to do it for each and every one, the there is no point is even having a universal CC system.
