"From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch."
Drag him out there. Do it. Preferrably without all the equipment, they love to defund Nasa anyway .... tell him it wasn´t enough for two suits.
For All Mankind
That quote so happens to be one of my favorite.
They seem petty from Earth as well
You seem really petty from your comment too.
+KeiKAndLies good one 😂😂
Adrian Duran for real tho
Neil DeGrasse Tyson is the true American Badass.
Gada101 so true
Elijah Pelofske j
Gada101 amen!
Scientific Badass*
Mentioning a county to an astrophysicist is the worst thing you can do
he should become secretary of education
Ma St we don't have an education department anymore.
Nah, it's still there, but probably not for long.
Trump will give it to Ted Nugent or something.
Sayem
and thinks evolution is a concept invented by the devil!
He is not brilliant. He is a young earth creationist.
Leave it to Neil to bring the panic attacks down to reality of perspective.
I took a shot every time I felt relief that I no longer live in the US.
I get my new liver on the 14th!
When do you get the fava beans and the nice chianti?
Health-care is literally in a hospital.. you think Americans don't have health care? We just don't have to pay for socialist tax demands that make us pay for everybody's health care, you can get health care paid for just for having a full time job in the US, and no ripping out of our taxes. Just more foreigners who don't know shit about the US...
***** What do you know about the US? Because you say all that as if having a full time job means they give you coverage with no deductible.
Even when you have a full-time job and even when said job comes with health insurance, we pay out the nose for it. Health care in general (when you account for everything... insurance premiums for us, taxes for others) is more expensive in America than it is in any other major power. It's obscene.
ExileOnDaytonStreet Yes the US health care does cost you but how can you say the US has no health care... that simply means the ability for receiving care for your health. What's next the average person can't afford Yale, so there's no education? To be clear there's a down and upside to both having universal healthcare, I'm not saying either is necessarily better, but nobody is superior for having socialist welfare programs. The US has their own way of dealing with healthcare, whether insurance,(our own "medcaid" in some states) or employee benefits and to a lot of people it actually fucks them over in taxes to pay for this. A lot of our system works around it.
Neil 2020 Make America Smart Again
America is a continent.
I'm glad Borat moved to America to play the saxophone on a Late Night show. (0:07)
very niiice
My rebuttal: Any issue seems pretty damn large when it's right in front of you.
That's exactly why: Just take a step back and see how ridiculous it actually is.
The1AndOnlyGoldenboy said the ant to the mouse
The point of the cosmic perspective is to stop thinking about it in terms of you and start thinking about it in terms of the universe.
The cosmic perspective was from my heart. Thank you Neil, thank you Edgar.
That quote by Edgar Mitchell might be one of the best quotes of all time.
I'm glad he's mentioning this, I realized today is Carl Sagans birthday and I went and listened to his "pale blue dot" speech again. It's much longer than the quote Neil used from the Apollo astronaut, but it felt just as relevant today. One of my favorite things to listen to when things feel overwhelming.
“Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.''
I was excited for a second till I googled it and noticed your post was before midnight. Mine is today, least I still got raising of the Iwo Jima flag.
I love that quote he read at the end
People don't think the universe be like it is but it do
Kind of hard to ignore "petty" politics for people who are going to be personally affected. I'm fairly well off and I'll be fine unless something catastrophic happens so I have the luxury of taking the cosmic perspective. But things are going to suck for LGBTQ people, Muslims, Mexican-Americans, women who need abortions, people dependent on the ACA for health insurance, etc.
KingOfMadCows Yeah this is what infuriates me, so many people have been marginalized and these racist, misogynst, bigots have been empowered whilst minority groups are degraded. I hate this whole "time to move on" shit. Nah I'm gonna fight this at every chance i get.
Doesn't matter how self important we find ourselves, our politics are petty, no matter how badly they effect humans on earth.
l0kidaf00l How does not wanting to lose basic human rights make someone self important?
And everything on earth is petty compared to the vastness of the universe. Heck, everything in this galaxy is petty compared to the hundreds of billions of other galaxies out there. For all we know our universe is insignificant. The universe wouldn't care if an asteroid or nuclear war destroyed human civilization. Doesn't mean we shouldn't be concerned about it.
KingOfMadCows you honestly think trumps going to do half the shit he spouts...he's a big blow hard and that's not going to change.
***** Of course, but now you're mixing a more standard perspective of the world with a cosmic perspective. The whole point of the cosmic perspective is to take a seat and lean back, look at thing differently, outside our normal experience, a perspective from the universe itself, where our struggles and successes are pointless.
Wow. I've said very similar things online as what Neil said about politicians. I remember trolls coming out of their holes to call me the worst names. Hearing Neil affirm my observations.... it fills me with determination.
I feel better now thanks NDT.
Kanye getting elected president doesn't seem too improbable now.
2:15 Stares into camera... "Please don't hurt me, Mr. President."
i think ndt is every host's favourite guest. i mean he's charismatic and smart and can talk for hours about astronomy. like, they never need to do any dumb shit with him all they have to do is just be like yeah just sit down and start talking no matter what comes out it's interesting
typoded and very passionate I mean it’s very contagious like a genuine smile
1:42 i LOVE this man. he's speaking so much truth, if you kids out there are all for quoting people and sharing useless videos of bloggers and youtube, for the love of all that is holy, share this instead. this election was proof of how much people got driven by hate rather than actual facts and interest towards the content of both parties' agenda.
In this country, we used to admire smart people.
now that country admires the likes of;
- Paris Hilton
-kim k (dont know how to spell her last name)
- kanye west
- other D-bags (male and female)
No we didn't lmao
that's why people like you and I are important, because we still admire and respect people like Neil
I like how the stars in the background match actual constellations and aren't just random dots.
You two are really great!
Neil bringing the truth.
Humans should unite. It's ridiculous to fight against each other because of politics. We can get along.
lesslighter Well, i hope humanity could solve it's problems without wars someday.
Prof Tyson nails it again!
Love the quote
Love you Neil DeGrassi-high Tyson!
Could it be possible for this man to be any more brilliant, more entertaining more enviable? ...
I LOVE NEIL 😫😍
Dr Tyson thank you thank you thank you. We need you
Neil Degrasse Tyson should have been on this show right before the election so more people could make an informed decision.
I want to believe that... but there are some people who care more about perception than facts.
Btw, I love that Wheatley is your profile pic.
Unfortunately, the people who would benefit the most from hearing him speak are the ones who are least likely to listen.
You guys realize that NDT hasn't actually said anything anti-trump here, you are just hearing what you want to hear, as per usual...
@@emmal429 So your saying that all the people who voted for Trump, are automatically racist? Got it. Good logic
I honestly don't see why we can't *do both*: we can criticise Trump _and_ educate people.
Because one of them suggests you're superior to your fellow Americas, a country that says every man is equal
space program will go to shit... i just thought about that
The one time Trump was asked about the space program, he was basically like "There's still a space program?" :(
Yea, cause it was just doing amazingly under Obama, getting it's funding cut to hell and back. Best hope for space these days is in the private sector with companies like SpaceX.
As bad as it already was it will get worse more than likely.
Matias Gipler yea true. fuck.
Oh shit. Climate change regulations. That just hit me.
The point is Earth is just a tiny little spec in the universe and no matter how large the conflict between humans may grow to be, in the end the universe is indifferent to it. None of this truly matters.
My existentialist code tells me it does matter.
An Evolving Ape yeah, I don't really like existentialism. I believe in absurdism. I think we should embrace the meaninglessness of our lives or live happily in spite of it.
Risen Demon best comment i've seen since this buffoonery has started 💜
Risen Demon
I think the universe is absurd too but I find value and meaning in the things I do daily and in how I perceive the universe. Happiness is a fleeting emotion and not something I really worry about. Being at peace within my own mind is more important to me.
0:01 - 0:03 - The hand drop with the sound heheh
So when is Stephen going to have an Ask The Big Questions segment with Tyson? He probably doesn't even need the teleprompter to turn Stephen's brain into liquid soup.
usaid alfatih soup is liquid
***** Not if it's in powder form😉
Although that comparison would've work just as well in the OP.
I love you, Neil, we all do. But how the hell do you educate a people who chose to believe in insane conspiracy theories, but refuse to even admit that science and reality itself is real? How can you educate those who deny education at all...?
You educate their children. Takes some time, I guess.
That's the huge challenge that we face but never give up. We have to keep trying for the sake of the world.
You can´t really. Those people have a stranglehold and will not let you save their children from stupidity.
Thats a doomed generation, even if you pick off anyone you can get.
your not getting the point...
Nice quote Mr. Mitchell!!
"took a shot everytime i wanted to kill my feelings" - Stephen Colbert
Well said...
Thank you Neil!
I've felt so hopeless and depressed after the election that no matter who spoke, including Stephen, I couldn't bring myself to hope or feel optimistic. But, I think having Neil deGrasse Tyson come and speak, made me feel the best I've felt in days. Thank you for speaking about Edgar Mitchell. I met Edgar Mitchell back in 2009. He still teared up back then when he spoke about his time in space. I believed every word then and his words repeated by you now, someone I greatly respect and look up to, gives me great comfort. Thank you so much. I needed this.
N. D. T. !!!
Tell it like it is!
Oooooh, I knew that quote long ago. That was and still is great.
Thank you Neil. I really needed this. And thank you Stephen for bringing him on the show :)
This is perfect!
Dr. Tyson is just the man America needs to listen to after this ugly election.
i can’t stop watching these 😂
0:07 Trumpet man
make america smart again
Wow what a serious coincidence that Colbert had Neil on his show. After the election one of the first things that came to my mind was " I wonder what Neil and Elon Musk think about this"". Had a hard time finding anything but here he is!
Da man! Science for president! 2020!
As a Canadian I think you guys should give Drumpf a chance. After, I mean, his next speech is one long apology starting to John McCain, all POWs, Ted Cruz's wife and father, war vets, Muslims, women, the foundation members he duped, his university students his screwed, etc.. Then you can see how his followers like him after that speech.
you forgot about the Mexicans, the Geneva Convention, and the Earth (Paris agreement/deregulating epa/fda), and his former wife who he cheated on while possibly sexually assualting women. Anymore I missed????
i love Neil man
didnt realize america was this racist. maybe because i was in cali and ny only.
*Racist because they always elect a white president???*
*That's racist.*
JoeDurobot Pretty sure he meant racist because they elected a racist.
Vic F *Still have no idea how he's supposed to be racist.*
Well for one thing, because he thinks of all non-whites strictly in terms of stereotypes. So basically the same reason a lot of radical liberals are racists, but still, he's definitely racist.
You must live in a pretty nice social bubble, because NY and Cali are extremely racist states as well. Look up "segregation and redlining in NYC" and "sundown towns in California" on Google.
This man is awesome
"From The Moon, Our Politics Seem Petty". Strange! From the dinner table they seem pretty important.
Tyson to the rescue.
TYSON: "Grab them by the Scruff!"
He didn't write the quote.
I don't understand the point of drinking games. Just let me drink already lol
I love this guy!
Last time I was this early Trump jokes were still a thing.
They will be again when he starts making decisions on behalf of the country.
They still are. People still make Dubya jokes, and it's been two terms since he's even been in office.
Did Bush jokes stop when Bush got elected?
Sean's Piano not a thing, it was still funny.
Hell, all we really need to do is remove the "Hope" from this meme and give it to Trump supporters in a few months. s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/6e/60/38/6e60384e84a490d6adf38a7b589f5dcb.jpg
I love how Stephen is a Christian who can really appreciate the good fight that scientists like Neil are fighting.
Neil Degrasse Tyson's laugh is awesome
The fact that all this is petty is only from the PERSPECTIVE OF the universe. I am a physicist and love NDT but just because we understand the universe on a certain level does not excuse us from doing out due diligence as citizens of this great nation. And don't kid yourselves folks, its still a great nation, we just gotta try a little harder to keep in on track now. Fight for what you believe in no matter what that is.
beanie0112 Well technically I am only a lowly grad student, but close enough I guess? The level of scientific understanding in government is atrocious, and is indeed scary as hell. When I see a congressman bring a snowball in and say its proof global warming doesn't exist I fear for humanity lol. Although I doubt they most are truly that stupid and are just shameless politicians bought out by big energy corporations.
0:53 Neil flashes devil horns, illuminati confirmed.
well actually the pink and index finger, as well as the thumb, were raised not devil horns but rather I love you in sign language.
Well, let's move there then.
Neil for president?
+Metalmanmick13 pls...dont make me cry...its just dreams that wont happn
Dr. Acula an atheist would never be elected for president unfortunately
Neil is awesome.
But we don't live on the God damned moon.
Clearly the point was lost on you.
You think?
Earth is much smaller than you imagine it.
#sendtrumptothemoon
without oxygen
CanadianRM4 yes
From _earth_ our politics seem petty, because they are.
Hell yeah. We've got a badass over here.
I love him!!!
He is my favorite guest too!!!!!
When you hate a politician you dont hate their electorate, you hate their donars
Agreed
randomflashbacks I know people who voted for Trump and I hate that they voted for him, but they are in no way shape or form what you described. Sure Trump had the support of every illiterate moron the US had to offer, but not all of his supporters are like that.
no i hate their voters. believe it or not, but a truck load of money cant actually buy an election. votes still mater and theres WAY too many fascists
I cried
"Bitch" was not beeped? WOW
laughterline because it was used in term of a female dog
Live Show. Even then bitch doesn't usually get bleeped.
Marquise Williams Yep, but it's a recording, they could've bleeped it after. In the after-election monologue Stephen's curse words were bleeped.
There's plenty of war and stupidity on earth. But there's also really amazing things, like cake! :)
anyone else think they missed an opportunity to show Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot speech?
The. Fucking. Man. Letting the natural phenomenon of the universe put our lives into perspective. Love NdT!
this like to dislike ratio is insane. what can I say? people love NDT
Dr Hibbert is looking well :)
Why did he look up at the ceiling and do devil horns?
In the next segment, just as he was about to reveal the secret of the universe, Colbert cuts him off to go to an ad. Maybe we're all about to die, and don't know because someone had to sell some dumb product!!?
That's my wallpaper. Thanks Black Science Guy :)
Edgar Mitchell died this years. RIP...
You know, I didn't follow Neil too much, but I like the guy.
We need to give the whole human race an orbital vacation, so they can get their own cosmic perspective.
Why can't we have Neil Degrasse Tyson as our president?
I eat food
I LOVE YOU, BLACK SCIENCE MAN!
Can we make Neil president?
Neil deGrasse is brilliant to listen to, but that vest seriously makes him look like an amateur magician at a children's birthday party.
Fish.
Anyone who hasn't read Carl Sagan's "Pale Blue Dot" quote really really really really should
How have you not done the stargazing thing with Neil yet?
1:49 First time I've ever thought something that Neil said was total bullshit. Politicians don't represent their electorate. They don't vote the way their constituency wants them to. They vote the way they themselves believe they should, or the way they've been bribed to. Letterman did a "know your senator" segment a few years ago and shamed the ones that despite having something like a 90% concensus against a particular issue, they voted for it. Either because it was their belief, they'd been bribed to do it, or a party whip forced them to do it. Unless the politicians are forced to vote how their constituents say they should, then it's all just rigged and crooked bullshit. This is true for all democracies, not just America.
