I recently listened to this quote and I'm having trouble deciding whether to buy things unnecessarily or not.
The quote is "If you don't buy the things you don't need, soon you will have to sell the things you need."

    • @LTT.Official
      @LTT.Official 3 года назад +27

I think it pretty much means, if you don't buy stuff you don't need to buy, pretty soon you'll realize that a lot of your current needs, you don't actually need and then you really see the real needs. An example of this was when I had cable and netflix, stopped paying for cable and kept netflix cause I thought I need to watch something. No I don't I hardly used it and quickly stopped paying for that as well. Now I just have an internet connection, that's all I really do need but then, I'm sure later on I'll be like, do I really need this? Let's not go down that rabbit hole :D

@@LTT.Official I've never had cable and never will. It's a plain scam. I only have Netflix and only for the kids. Once the kids grow a little older, it's going away, too.

@@MyReviews_karkan The question you have to ask yourself is, 'Do I want to be free of the nine to five?' Like the comment above says, 'You will probably find yourself selling the things you don't need'. This also gives you the freedom to buy the things you do need without having to rob money from the future. Loans and credit cards are just that...robbing money from your future where you will find that you are stuck in the rat race.

You not just have to host your own email to get full privacy and security but you also should use PGP encrypted emails only because even if you host your own email server, SMTP and other typical mail protocols are so old that they don't even encrypt anything by default. Even the encryption you can use is not end-to-end encryption from sender to the actual receiver. So please use PGP! If it's too difficult for anyone to setup, just have a look at the PEP project from the PEP foundation. They should have got you covered on most operating systems with most email clients to automatically use PGP by default.

I personally perceive Freedom as the option to say NO to something, and with people having automatic opt-in to so many things now with no choice of backtracking, the only thing left of freedom is the slogan, luckily I have a completely non connected car in which I can still COMPLETELY disable traction control, trivial yes, but does make the point, also my insurance company hasn't been able to forced any tracking device in my old car either

If this video was addressed to businesses then I agree with everything but because is not, then just self hosting advice is not the best message. Paying for secure & safe email services like ProtonMail or Tutanota are 2nd place to self hosting.

Good stuff Chris!! Thanks for doing this.
I think the concept of Privacy, Security, Freedom which you said should also be taught in school. The future is them. Here's a challenge for you Chris - how would you explain this to a teenager? I can take that video and then show it to my niece and nephews :D

As a private security contractor, security is a multi tier process. Trying to deploy a perfect secure ecosystem from the start is futile. One must accept a stepping process where one defines their own security vulnerabilities. For me and my services, our clients have a physical and digital vulnerability. Deploying the physical solution is quite straight forward. Digital security has to start with decentralizing services from the public cloud. Deploying our own server hosting nextcloud offers our clients an immediate decentralization from Google services and Microsoft services. With nextcloud, one can justify slashing email usage to a bare minimum using encrypted nextcloud as a replacement.
The goal is to all but eliminate the need for email as a whole. This takes time and nothing happens overnight. A complete digital security package aims to neutralize as many security vulnerabilities as possible by decentralizing from the public cloud and the multiple 3rd party service providers. Using nextcloud removes the largest vulnerabilities. From here we can continue to grow other self hosted tools to further remove 3rd party services.
Nextcloud helps alleviate sacrificing freedom for security. There really is no downside. In fact it's liberating. For the life of me I can't figure out why you and others don't bring this up when discussing communications security.

Hi, you've done many videos on how to turn off telemetry in W10, but you've done zero videos monitoring the traffic after you've den that. We want to know if shutup10 really works. Maybe wireshark is a suitable tool. Is it still the service DiagTrack that does all the telemetry, is there a way to completely remove it?

Speculation on my part as a marketing and communications person: control vs convenience is the underlying, if rarely touched on, aspect of computing. Big tech's advertising almost always puts emphasis on convenience, and rarely on control (Apple offering iPhone users transparency on what Apps are tracking users is a rare but welcome, if somewhat belated move imo).
Control implies inconvenience, time investment, and switching costs (whether said cost is financial or otherwise) - even if this is untrue; I find the terminal and vim far more convenient than having a million windows of MS Word open for instance - if you had told me a year ago this would be the case, I'd have laughed. But that's the power of perception: the view that anything outside big tech as inherently inconvenient will continue to fester.
The marketing logic is fairly straightforward in strategy and execution too: all of Big Tech can agree to fight on the battlefield of convenience, pretending control doesn't exist. To most non-tech users, the idea of control then looks, at best, eccentric and, at worse, a waste of time. I've lost count of the the number of times I hear some of RUclips's tech channels condescendingly view the time it takes for users to feel comfortable on Linux as the result of people who don't value their time.
Apple is the best at it because every new product comes with a bullet point list of conveniences.
FOSS users prefer control, but we are too small and fragmented to mount a sustained marketing pitch to non-tech users over a few years where the emphasis on the marketing is on control.
Great video as usual, Chris. Looking forward to the tutorial on setting up personal emails.

Very good video. I think pointing out the cost of "free" services is important. It's fine if you want don't want tracking with these sites, but lets not pretend like that idea is all that compatible with having the service being free, you're not going to get something for nothing. They are businesses, they are there to make money.
I think a basic solution would be a paid version of the site with enhanced privacy options that would be verified by some third party entity. I know a lot of people would be against this because they think the service should be free, but alluded to, the service was never free, you just didn't know you were paying.

Yes, people try to strive for privacy because it is very important to think twice when giving yourself away. In crypto, that is manifested in a high interest of users in Bitcoinmix or other coin join services, privacy coins and many others...

Having been brought up in a third world country has given me a great deal of modesty and minimalism. I know what I need, I'll go buy it whenever I really need it. I don't care how much big tech tracks and sells my personal data to advertisers, the seller WILL make money (in exchange of me using their product for free), and that's fine, but the buyer (advertisers) will never make a penny off of me. First, I have ads blocked everywhere in my life. Second, I never see an ad (if I ever do) then go "yeah, this looks good, let me go buy it". It's a win win situation for me.
