  • In this episode of Stories of Appalachia, we tell the story of the prelude to the infamous Trail of Tears-the murder that inflamed Cherokee tensions and provided the legal framework for the tragic forced relocation of the tribe from the southeast to what’s now Oklahoma.
Join Rod Mullins and Steve Gilly as they unravel the complex tale of Jack Walker Jr., a Cherokee man caught in the crossfire of a nation's strife and the murky politics that led to a pivotal moment in American history.

I got a possible Cherokee ancestor in Keziah Vann. But im not Cherokee since it was so far back. But love hearing the stories. I dont know the language and i dont follow the ways. But i think another ancestor William Patrick Vaughn a long hunter, had the right idea going to Arkansas with the Chickamuaga abd while a friend to Daniel Boone he was also a friend with the old school Cherokee. Just my opinion.

Have you ever had a DNA done? I did it. You can order a kit online for this. I had Irish and Scandinavian just a little showed up. Which my family was surprised with this. Later on the history channel I learned that most of us do have this. It’s because of raping and pillaging centuries ago. So as far as the Cherokee showing up in your DNA is very good. They can tell you the percentage of each race that’s in your DNA. Our family had so much fun doing this. I thought you and your siblings would be all the same. Not true. You all may have the same races but different percentages. My son has always looked Native American. But we had no idea why. My husband’s great aunt did a family tree for his side. Learned of Cherokee in my husband’s side. (Surprise). My son got a big percentage of that . Try it it’s so fun and educational. I have heard of family’s giving these kits for gifts. Also if you watch these DNA web sites they do run special sales on this. It’s not cheap but so worth it.
