I just have to say, I’ve watched Laina’s Life and your channel and you two have MADE my cloth journey. I “failed” with my daughter after doing it about 3-5 months due to having too much microfiber and not enough of consistent washing machine access. I stumbled upon a video of yours a few weeks ago and now I am successfully using free/second hand Thirsties covers and FSTs until I have money to buy some more flats and ….. why didn’t I just try this before. I finally feel like I have a consistent wash routine and if I have to hand wash, I’m not super scared about it. Now I’m due with #2 in February and finally watching these newborn videos feeing inspired to actually try newborn cloth!
I love Laina, she’s super sweet. I talk to her behind the scenes. She’s the reason I started trying muslin flats and fell in love! I wish mf would stop being the industry standard. It creates so many issues. If you’re able to get your hands on receiving blankets then those make great flats too. More absorbent than FST, imo. I’ve been able to get the majority of mine for free by asking friends and family. I found a few at goodwill for .50! They’ve been a staple in my stash for years 🖤 I wouldn’t buy them brand new, but they’re great if you can repurpose them
@@JaysNest Ironically, now that I saw this comment, my daughter outgrew the absorbency on FSTs and I started using my few receiving blankets I was gifted. I had two muslin blankets I couldn’t figure out how to fold but I folded in thirds instead of half if that makes sense and then padfolded and it works well. I finally bought a few muslin flats and GIRL I am in love!!! I bought large prefolds from GMD too and I like them a lot but I think I should have gotten mediums😅 oh well, ya live and ya learn.
I am at a total loss with what to do with a newborn! I’ve always used disposables with my last 4 but in one of your videos you talked about the rental program and it blew my mind. I’m trying so hard not to buy any newborn diapers lol. All of my girls lost their cords within 3-4 weeks 😭
Newborn cloth diapering is my favorite thing ever lol. It’s way easier than the other stages of cloth diapering, imo. But there are tons of parents who disagree with that. I will always advocate for it but I know it’s not for everyone. Some people just don’t have the budget to do it. Other people just don’t want to spend the time doing in because it’s more work. Find a happy medium that works for you. I can’t tell you what you’ll like or what will be perfect for you. Do your research and be realistic with yourself. Can you afford a newborn stash? Will you have the energy to do it? No one here will be judging you and your decision to use cloth in the beginning days. When we have newborn babies we are put in survival mode lol. I think that might be another reason why i like cloth for tiny babies. It gives me something to look forward to. With that said, saving money isn’t the main reason why I choose cloth. Cloth is just a lifestyle change for me.. and sometimes we do use disposables here too. . Don’t hold yourself to high standards ❤️ Use half & half if you want. Don’t over complicate it and stress yourself out. You’ve got this momma 😘💕🙌🏼
It's not too far from summer though 😉 You have the perfect amount of time to plan and build your stash! Hopefully I'll have a decent amount of newborn videos up by the time your baby is born
That You Are My Sunshine ND cover is so cute I really didn't know about them when I first started cloth about 3 years ago but they are one of the shops that I go to the most. And also Green Mountain diapers if I could go back it would be so different.
I love my Nicki's covers! Definitely one of my favorite newborn and one size covers. The nb wasn't cord friendly for Scarlett but it has lasted as long as the Thirsties duo sz1. I've come to really love GMD Muslin flats. I didn't think I would but I totally do!
I love 36 as a number as well!! My daughter would wet anywhere from 14-24 diapers per 24 her period and this lasted from birth until 8 mo, when she started to crawl and had something else to do! 😂 it was mayhem! So glad I had a "larger" stash and not just the minimum, plus as you say, line drying takes time!
Oh my goodness 🙈 She could really plow through diapers lol It's always great to be prepared! With the first child I cloth diapered I had only 12 NB diapers. It was not doable lol. I was washing about 2x a day and the loads were so small. I started buying sized diapers and one size to help fill my stash. It was a mess 😂 I don't have the patience to wash every day anymore. Having a larger stash is definitely really nice!
I never cloth diapered my newborns but I did cloth diaper my 6 month+ babies and I did it on 6 crappy Gerber prefolds, 5 covers, 6 homemade tshirt prefolds, and 1 secondhand homemade fitted diaper. I did that with 4 babies and had no money to invest in a better/bigger stash. This was before Facebook, etc so I was on my own. It was stressful and I was always teetering on not having a diaper for the next change but I made it work. A lot of naked air time helped stretch diaper changes out too 😬 I’m due in Jan with baby 5 and I have a proper stash this time, thanks to all the resources available nowadays. I’m grateful for all these vids; it’s like I have to relearn everything since there 6 years between my youngest and this new babe.

One size tends to be really huge for a newborn. I definitely prefer newborn diapers over one size for small babies. I'm glad this was helpful for you ❤️

Great video. Always informative. If we have more I may get some newborn diapers this time around. Sweet pea and diaper rite were my favorite but they are different now. Never found a good newborn cover. Prefolds were my go to for newborn phase. I may have to try the grandma el's we have a bad allergy rash...do they sell it in stores? Not a fan of AIO even though they are convenient. An alternative to synthetic liners would be wool liners or raw silk. I agree about the wipes we use them for so many things. I use my smaller prefolds for washing my face or spills and small flats for bibs.
I've been wanting to try DR but haven't heard too many reviews of it. Nicki's used to sell Grandma Els but it doesn't look like they sell it anymore. I bought this tub from a local cloth shop. We almost got Scarlett raw silk liners! Her skin was so sensitive to everything. I might eventually invest in some for this baby to try out. I love the feeling of silk. I can imagine that it feels really nice against the skin

There's (almost) nothing worse than constant leaks with cloth diapers. Newborn diapers like AIOs always tend to leak the most because of the lack of absorbency. None of my babies have been heavy wetters during the newborn stage thlugh. So I'm nervous this baby might lol. I definitely have my arsenal prepared in case baby is a flooder haha! And yes! I 100% don't know what I'd do without the online community❤️ So many amazing parents!
I personally would not use a pocket as a cover. But if you're able to not get pee or poop on the fleece then you could always reuse it if you're in a pinch. The problem with the micro fleece is that it gets moisture wicked onto it easily so it wouldn't be as effective as a cover. I've seen mom's talk about using it as a cover with success. It's always worth a try to see I feel it works out for you! I really love my prefolds *inside* of pockets.
This was super helpful! I'd like to add that Happy Beehinds tiny newborn diaper has the snap for under the cord! They're good quality and affordable, especially when they have sales! (They're AIO)
Snaps or Aplix for newborn diapers? A lot of people say that the Velcro wears out or the Velcro sound scares the baby? But to me, I would think Aplix would be the way to go with newborns bc they are changed so often and are tiny. Advice?
I personally keep a mixture of both. Last time around I loved velcro in the first month but after that first month I found myself liking snaps more. I found that velcro was really nice to use under the cord. I've never had an issue with velcro scaring baby. I've heard people talk about that for years but I haven't personally experienced that. I have noticed that snaps tend to have a better resale value.

Sizes of prefolds are personal preference. If your baby comes out 10lbs then newborn prefolds would be worthless to you. My baby is a few days old and even newborn prefolds are too large. So I can't give you a specific amount of what would work for you personally. There's a huge margin of things to consider. Maybe start out with 24 newborn and 12 small. I recommend 36 changes, so for prefolds that would mean 36 prefolds. I'd recommend 6-8 covers minimum. Happy flute has a decent cover that fits small. I also like rumparooz for an average sized newborn. Consider buying used covers because you can save more money. You can find the happy flute brand new for $4-6 though, so I'd just buy that new. Happybeehinds sells a rebranded happy flute cover with theirr tag on it. I think thefluffypenguin also sells rebranded happy flute covers as well.

How many diapers would you suggest if washing every 3rd day? I know that is a long time to go without washing, and I don't actually plan on going that long but i'm trying to be realistic. Currently we're ttc but dealing with infertility. I love making cloth diapers anyway but I had made mostly medium, large and one size diapers. Now i'm working on a newborn stash.

Granted I have small hands, but not at all. It was very easy for me to stuff. The pocket opening in the back is pretty big and my hand fits in it comfortably. It's actually a decent pocket diaper. It's not cord friendly and the Velcro isn't the best on the market so I'm not sure how it would last over the months. We used it a decent amount of times with Scarlett but it wasn't my first pick of diapers to use. Plus we didn't start using it until she was about 9lbs. Even at 16 lbs she fit into it on the middle rise with a newborn prefold stuffed in it. I do think it would last until the advertised weight of 22lbs.
