  • Опубликовано: 4 окт 2024
  • After the arduous task of dragging our lead keel out of the ground and onto the cribbing in the boathouse, it was time to start working on flattening both keels in preparation for them to be mated together.
See how we set things up in order to do that.
Also, we will be at the Maine Boatbuilder's show in Portland ME from March 23rd to 25th and are scheduled to do a talk. If you are in the area please come and check out this great event and meet us in person!
Last but definitely not least.... One of our subscriber's girlfriend contacted us and about a special birthday gift for her boyfriend. She got him a Patreon to our channel asked us to wish him a happy birthday in the video. So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY Blair Nichols!!
But let's see if we can top that and get as many Happy birthday wishes we can pile up for Blair in the comments below! GO!

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

My dad and his company of 4 brothers lofted and built a 5 3 ft 3 mast katch, in 1939-41 in mentor on the lake eire shore. It placed 2nd in class 1943. It later was dry docked, left to decay, until 1950 where it was rebuilt and shipped to san Francisco thru the 70s , it then ended up in the keys where is sank during hurricane Andrew. I have a couple black and whites of dad lofting and stem fitment a color of the launch. His favorite tool was his adz which was forged in Hawaii before wwII. He was a master ship wright in the merchant marines there. He had it in his Navy chest until he passed in 2006 , then it was given to an obscure family member who probably sold it at a flea market. I always say he forgot more about ship building than I ever learned, we worked together from 73-88 when he retited back to the lake erie area. Those were fine times ,what an education. Miss him.

For leveling the wooden keel. If you check out your area, you will find someone with an LT15 wood mizer bandsaw mill. Just rent a Hiab and take your keel there and they will cut it perfectly in a few minutes. Then flip it and make the last cut wherever you want. You guys are doing an incredible job! My Dad was a master shipwright and I was lucky enough to work with him for years building lapstrake/clinker hull, cedar boats. I'm really enjoying watching you guys work it all out!

Happy Birthday to Blair. I don't understand all the words you use (nomenclature) but having built motorcycles, lift cars and aircraft interiors all my life, I can relate and follow with much interest and recall about what is happening and the way you are doing it with jigs, templates, marking out techniques and other building reasonings. It gives me great pleasure to see how you are doing this and can relate a great deal to my last 45 years of construction. Happy days guys.

HBD, Blair. Thanks, guys. I spent 15 years traveling the country turning 45 -pound rolls of construction drawings into million dollar Banana Republic stores and the like. Man, there were places I'd have KILLED to hire someone as thoughtful and skilled as you to lighten my load. That's perhaps a bigger compliment than you'll realize.

Thanks, we have worked with crews in the past that left a bit to be desired so we have some understanding =)
We heard from a gentleman who worked in/on UN buildings in far flung places and said they had limited tools, time and resources and he also would have killed to have guys like us on the crew. We never knew we could be in such high demand! It seems most employers want a specialist, not a jack of all trades I can figure something out folks like us, glad there are still niches out there for us!

I did a few big projects in areas outside my culture. A trusted associate was key. But, then, I'm so West Coast that I still find it odd to see someone use a folding ruler! A lot of what I see is your passion for the project. That was most often the attitude I took into an assignment, but I couldn't pay people to feel the same way. All my best.

My father was a boatbuilder, he had 2 workshops on Canvey Island in Essex, England, He used to hand build hard chine and round bilge boats, making his own cold moulded plywood, when it wasn't carvel or clinker built. He used to build masts and spars for G Prout and Sons the catamaran builders on Canvey, he also built the 80 ft wishbone mast for the 'rehu Moana' the catamaran that went to the arctic.

Oh, I used to own a 1931 TSDY the 'Kathleen Mary built by Thorneycroft for Pride of the 1931 Southampton Boat show for Lord Harmsworth Barthomlew and named after his wife Kathleen Mary. The Royal Navy took it during WW II as Churchills VIP Cutter in The Solent, it left no bow or stern wash (so could not be seen by it's fluorescence at night.) It had it's original Baby Blake heads and Throneycroft RH1 engines in it when I bought it.
