Thank you for your video, which has enabled me to clean out my ink absorber box on my MFC-J4610DW. Extremely useful to be able to do it oneself on a home printer that I've had for years but doesn't print hundreds of pages a year. It may be economical for a business to just get the maintenance guy in, or buy a new printer, but completely different scenario for an ordinary household.
This is a beautifully done video. I disassembled my MFC-J4410DW, removed the ink absorber box, and cleaned everything out, including thoroughly washing out and drying the pads. After reassembly, it works, but the status still says, "Ink Absorber Near Full". I reset the purge and flush counters, and still get that message. Then I found your other video about also clearing the FLSBK and FLSCL counters. THAT did the trick. No more error status. Thank you!
If only I'd got "Ink Absorber Near Full" to give me some warning before it was full and stopped working! Cleaning worked well, thanks, on a 4420. I did later find where I could get a replacement box with pads, but I'm glad I did the messy bit, especially as the replacement would have been £32. Then the touchpad malfunctioned and I couldn't purge the counters, so I found another exact model that was "free to a good home" and swapped the screen assemblies. It's been less used than mine, and Its ink absorber is only half full, so I've also got that as a spare, not to mention every other part I might be able to use!
Thank you! Just successfully cleaned my ink absorber box and reset purge count on my J4310 DW. I had to follow the alternate instructions (in comments) to get in maintenance mode and then after resetting purge, I had to power off and on to fully clear message. Printer is working great. I could not be more pleased :)
Worked perfectly on DCP-J4110DW, the only difference is that there isn't a crew in the part you need to unplug some cables, but the rest is exactly the same. Nice video tutorial
hello glad to see your printer was the same as mine. would you share your tips here on which plugs need to be unpluged to make the "ink absorber full" error message disappear?
Thanks for your video, great help with an old 2nd hand printer! A little tip for cleaning the 2nd absorber pad at 3:09. I couldn't lift any ink (seemed very dry), so I put a little amount of water on the paper towel and dabbed the pad ... it loosened up the dry ink from the pad. Repeated a few times with wet then dry paper towels and the pad ended up almost ink free.
Thanks for posting this video. I used it to guide me thru disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly of a J4420 printer. The only change I made was to remove the electrical connector that goes to the ink Printer tray in order to remove the tray. The little electrical board is attached to the tray and difficult to remove while trying to remove the tray from the printer. It was much easier to remove the board after the tray was completely removed, everything else worked out well. I was surprised to see how much ink was stored in the tray! Seems like a waste of a lot of expensive ink in that tray!!
MFC-J4510DW: Thanks for taking the time to produce this video...just some FYI for those trying to clear messages, etc...after removing the 'chip' attached to the absorber box it became apparent that the chip is actually a moisture detector whereby if it is too moist, (i.e. full of ink) then no matter what you do to clear messages, if the felts are wet this will generate the Error 46/Ink Absorber Pad Full error...all the magic keystrokes, number codes or finagling won't clear this error until you address the full pads which I simply removed rinsed under warm water, then let dry and reassembled...Hope this helps someone down the line...Good luck.
That IS helpful, thanks! I am working on mine right now, and I as guessing that's all it was (detecting resistance across two metal points), and that you want those pads to be REALLY dry before you put this all back together.
@@cowsongs This suggests an even easier fix. Just leave the contacts unplugged, throw away most of the felt (leave a piece in contact with the ink tubes to stop them clogging), and reseal the box with waterproof tape (eg silicon plumbers'). Sure, somewhere north of 20,000 pages the box is going to overflow and maybe make a mess, but by that time the print heads or feeder will have worn out anyway.
Thanks for this video!!!! I wondered what was involved. Probably not an easy task for the lay person, but easy for this retired EE. ***I have a brother MFC-J4710DW that's run trouble free for 10-12yrs!!!! I always used the OEM ink, not the cheaper generic water based 3rd party inks. --> Finally my ink absorber got full, and I need my printer back TODAY. So I'll perform the cleaning fix you suggest here. ***Thanks again. PS You have a soothing voice, was a pleasure listening to your video.
Thanks so much for uploading this video. I used it to help guide me through replacing the absorber box on my MFC-J4510DW and i also used another of your videos to get into maintenance and reset the counters. Both videos were great and everything went smoothly.
So relieved to see your post - I have the same model, 12 years old but still as good as new except for the "ink absorber near full" message LOL. I am ordering a replacement box but it doesn't come with installation instructions, this video will be invaluable as will your commentary for this model in particular! Thank you!
thanks for this! had this printer for over 8 years and worked flawless until recently. i didnt clean the pad, but rather ordered a new one from wallmart for $40. your explanation is very detailed and is extremely helpful! thanks for this video, along with the other on how to reset the ink pad error. thumbs up!
thank you for 2 perfect fixes paper jam (also needed a foam piece to get the lever to return) and ink absorber is now clean and no more 5 minute reset every time I want to print.
Brilliant, thanks, solved the problem. Video not always very clear but good enough to do what really matters. Messy business though, with all that ink in the absorber! I got the "absorber full" message afterwards as well, but managed to reset that too. Thanks for posting this, saved me the purchase of a new printer.
Thanks a bunch for sharing. I did experience the issue below, but just ignore the "Machine Error46" message and enter 80 as instructed. 1. Press Home button for 5 seconds. 2. Press blank entry on displayed list for 5 seconds. 3. Entered code *2864 4. "Machine Error46" is displayed. Just ignore the error and proceed to enter 80. The machine will enter maintenance mode and you can then perform the purge.
Brilliant. Excellent instructions relatively easy to follow. Messy. Saved my printer and all my new ink cartridges won't have to go in the bin. One comment is that if one understands that the support arm has a small plastic protuberance at the rear end (back) then gentle levering releases the arm. Otherwise lots of sweat is involved. PS Brother support says only their technicians can do it, Crap.
i can't find anywhere that releases the arm when pressed. does anyone have the link to the detailed version of this video? it is so well done, i just want to get past the part about releasing the control arm so i can proceed, thank you
I didn't find any detail. I do remember it was a struggle/fiddle particularly putting back. I know its slopy shoulder but i did it with perseverance. However the effort was worth it. I did have to reset the page counter a second time shortly after doing it.
Great video. Just as a point, the left (small) pad can become swollen from absorbing too much ink and cause smearing on the print head. I was able to reach it without disassembly and pat it with a paper towel slightly damp with diluted Windex. (about 10:1 Water:Windex), repeating until the pad was almost ink free. (I found it amazing, how much ink it can hold.) Disclaimer: Using any kind of solvent is not recommended by the manufacturer, so use it at your own risk. I've found that diluted Windex appears to be safe for all printers I've owned. HP 560/C HP 990/C Epson Workforce 600 Brother MFC-J4420DW (current printer) Make sure it is diluted and allow the sponge pad to dry before operating the printer. You can accelerate the process by blotting it with a paper towel moistened with distilled water a few times, then use a dry paper towel. Note: I have not attempted to use this solution to purge the heads on any printer. I have used it to surface clean the print head jets. Remember, the key word is blotting, avoid any forceful wiping.
Uh my printer is like 8 years old. What a pain this is to remove everything. And to power up my Brother model you have to stand on your ear just right to get it to come on and stay on. Mine is going in the trash and I will buy another printer. I just wasted $40 on ink because I thought my yellow was the culprit. But.....your videos are excellent.
Super helpful video, was able to follow along and get it done. Thank you. The printer worked for two prints. There were some faint lines and so ran nozzle cleaning. Then it went back to the "ink absorber pad full" message. I did the purge and flush reset. Any ideas for how to fix? Thanks for making these videos and for your help
Great video that answered whether there were any other counters that needed to be cleared. I have cleaned the absorber, reset purge and then restarted to be met with Ink Absorber near full. I then saw your video and cleared the black and colour flush counters. Unfortunately I still get the ink absorber near full message. Is there anything else I should be addressing.
This video enabled me to clean the ink absorber pad(s) and re-assemble properly. Afterwards, the printer (model Brother MFC-J4120DW) still reported the error message for ink pad full. But I entered the printer's maintenance mode using the info in your other video - *(Fix Ink Absorber Pad Full - Reset the PURGE and FLUSH Counter on Brother Printer (Error 46)* - and after resetting BOTH the 'purge' and 'flush' counters... my printer then was working fine! Has been for a few weeks now since the DIY repair. Thank you so very much for your great videos / demos. Do you have a Paypal or Patreon? Love from Scotland. :D ♥
I’m so glad my videos helped you ! It’s been a while since I’ve made a video so please let me know if there’s anything you need tips on -! PayPal’s qldtrade1 or kozzles06@hotmail.com ..
@Know-how Thank you very much! I've a couple of Brother machines with blocked nozzle probs. I tried the syringe / cleaning fluid / print head cleaning method.. but immediately afterwards the machine will only print black, anything of colour is coming out completely blank. I think maybe I've burst ink tubes(?) I've yet to try printing with again, I moved on to a different machine. (all Brothers) I've also got a Brother J5720-DW, practically brand new with blocked colour nozzles. :'( I guess I'll try syringe clean method on that next. And be extremely gentle pumping the cleaning fluid through. Thank you again for your time. Have made a Paypal payment for your help. :D ♥
I’m going to make a vid next on manually cleaning the print head and nozzles. When you used the syringe method, did you use distilled water or isopropyl alcohol ? Did you let it sit for a good 5/10 mins to absorb ? Check the print head itself is clean too~ dampen a folded paper towel and move the print head onto it (unplug the printer mid-print so you can freely move the print head). Let it sit on the towel for a while (at least 15mins) then move it over the towel a number of times.
@@Knowhow1 The cleaning kit was a product from 'Printhead Hospital'. The cleaning fluid tub lists no ingredients, just safe 'safe effective formulation for use with all water based printer inks. Bought online, the listing said was suitable for Brothers and others. I'll try that advice with checking the print head itself too, many thanks! :)
Thank you for the video which helped me to disassembled and cleaned my brother printer ink absorber felt. Although mine is DCP-J4110DW actually printer structure are almost the same as yours. The problem is once I have cleaned and dried the felter and put them back to the printer felt box, assenbled the printer. the "ink absorber full" error message remains when the printer is turned. Why is that? do you have any idea to resolve it?
Very helpful and informative video . But is very important to show how to reset the printer on the same video. not everyone is tech savvy even on the most basic things
thank you! Just cleaned the absorber on my 10-yo J4510 -- it sure was full! great video (though a little more video detail on unplugging the *6* plugs on the wiring harness would have been helpful. However, I reset the Purge and Flush counters per your other video, reconnected my wifi, and printed a test page...and right after it printed, again got the "Ink Absorber nearly full" msg -- same as before (even after rebooting the printer). Was not expecting that! Might I have a faulty detection circuit? Will have to see what happens next...
Thanks for the video. I replaced the ink absorber with an entire new one. When I put everything back together I got an error message that the scanner cover is open (when it’s clearly closed). Any advice on a fix? Thanks!
MFC-J4420DW. A very (un)helpful Brother chat tech was trying to help me with a print heads cleaning issue. She actually led me into the maintenance Purge mode and emptied my brand new ink tanks. I think she realized what she had done, ordered new inks and quickly signed off. Anyhoo... I've got a full absorber pad. How do you know if the plastic tray needs to be replaced? What kind of tape did you use to close the felts pad case? Do you have to protect the printer heads in any way? I think I could make the repair easily enough if I could just plug in a new part.
Greetings, nice video, my question is for my MFC-J470DW that has stopped due to absorber full error msg. following other instructions i cn get to the maintenance and also the purge ket but my number showing is 10779, it wont let me clear then error 46, any suggestions Paul,Toronto
Thank you for a very informative and well presented video. I have an older Brother MFC 290 C which is a marvellous machine and has served me well for many years. However it has just thrown up an “error 50” message. An on-line search informed me that it may have a foreign object (paper clip, staple or a piece of paper stuck somewhere in the works. I followed your instructions as to how to get the top cover and the glass plate up so I had a clear view of the rollers, print head, rails etc however I found nothing. Could it be that the ink absorber box is full? If that is a possibility are there any videos that you know of that would show me how to get at it on my MFC-290-C? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Rob
Hello there,Thanks for the video. My pads are drying so I have as of now not reassembled....however I located a service manual for this model MFCJ4620DW and when one reaches the waste Ink absorber box (BTW that's Brother PN : LET 43300 on the assembly ) the instructions are not to remove the chip but instead to follow the wiring from the chip back to the circuit board ( about 7 inches ) and disconnect it there not at the absorber box. P.S. My box's felt was swimming in "waste ink". Also in case anyone else tried to pull on the plug from the circuit board for the ribbon cable....the plug stays on the board just gently lift the cable and it slips out.....
I have replaced the absorber pad as per your video but cannot see how install the support arm correctly. Can you advise how to find your video on this item
After doing everything as instructed, now my machine doesn't print blacka at all. Do you have any idea if it's related? Thanks for the great video anyway
Thanks much for this video. I’m keep getting blank pages now, I’m seeing no error codes, I did clean the auto head cleaning and manual clean as well but no luck… Can you please share if you have an idea to fix the blank pages?
Is there any ink at all on the page or completely blank ? You may need to dismantle again and make sure all the wires, and tubing are connected properly. You could try a power purge, but it sounds more like a connection was missed on installation : ruclips.net/video/P-pXJTtlkFM/видео.html
Great help, thank you Unfortunately my MFC-J6930DW (with it's ink absorber saturated) is constructed significantly differently, so removing the scanner cover does not seem to be as easy as "pushing away from you", the scan cover arm is also a bit more tricky to unclip. In the MFC-J9630DW the ink absorber box is accessed from the bottom, it's a rectangular box held in by two screws, thus easy to remove. However, the problem on mine is the 'ink absorber pad' under the cartridges and it's 'wick' that descends through the bottom of the printer into the 'ink absorber box' It's become saturated after many attempts to fix 'smudged ink' by using the clean printheads maintenance routine. While I can remove the 'ink absorber box' from below... getting inside the machine to access the 'ink absorber pad & it's wick' is proving probematic!
I had this issue aswell on my dcp printer, it was an issue until I noticed how to do it. It won't come off right away like you see in the video but you need to put a bit of pressure at the bottom of the handle, there's some kind of tab there that wipp make it a lot easier to get out.
SOOOO. I see I was not the only one that had an error message EXPORT TO CARD appear when entering the maintenance mode after cleaning the absorber pads and attempting to clear the purge in the maintenance mode....and failing at the effort.. After hours of digging I found this process that works. In the Brother service manual section 5-4 - LIST OF MAINTENANCE MODE FUNCTIONS... Maintenance Mode 46 is listed as BACKUP 0F MACHINE INFORMATION. Going down to Mode number 76 is listed as PURGE OPERATION. The page is 5-54 section 1.3.29. Here one can perform different purges as well as reset the purge or flushing count. Here are the instructions from the BROTHER SERVICE MANUAL for model MFCJ4620DW - RESETTING purge or flushing count. 1 ) Press 8 and O keys in this order in the initial stage of the maintenance mode to call up the machine's log information ( maintenance Mode 80 ) refer to section 1.3.32 in this chapter. 2 ) Press the Mono Start Key several times until the purge or flushing count appears on the LCD display.( mine took about 25 pushes) 3 ) Press the 2,7,8, and 3 keys in this order to reset the purge or flushing count. The machine automatically returns to the initial stage of the maintenance mode. The procedure shown in Know How's post works after this procedure is performed, so perhaps the method I found in some cases must be used to reset after a cleaning of the Absorber Pads, at least in some cases. When my printer returned to normal mode the Absorber pad is nearly full message still displayed, however this does not stop the printer from printing. I printed an image off of my desktop and the message then disappeared and I am back to normal at this point. Apparently there are maintenance mode codes and error codes...well of course there are !!!
Thanks for this. I have another video which includes resetting the purge count aswell - ruclips.net/video/ANCokAwTwxo/видео.html Sometimes you need to do this as well like you said, particularly after cleaning the ink absorber box
@@Knowhow1You are too kind..I do believe that I did take the long way home. I do believe I was at times entering the error code 46 instead of 80 as per your instructions. Entering 46 sent me to Export to Card as I just recreated the error in the maintenance mode. 80 in the service manual is shown as DISPLAY of the EQUIPMENT'S LOG and shows and gives access to a lot of operational stuff including Purge counts . I have a much greater appreciation for printer tech's after this !!!
Sorry, but I am not exactly sure where this "chip" at the ink absorber is. Didn't see anything fall when I took the asorber off. Also should the absorber clip into anything unfortunately mine was dislodged already when I opened the printer up. Great video, just waiting for the pads to dry thoroughly. Probably put it back together tomorrow. Many thanks for taking the time to explain to "dummies" like me.
The chip is shown at 2:28 of the video - it's at the front of the box. The absorber box has plastic clips that should easily clip into place. Check to see if there's any white plastic pieces around or on the absorber which show signs of being snapped or broken since yours was already dislodged. Good luck and let me know if you need anything else
@@Knowhow1 I never did find the chip however when I put it all back together again it seems to be working ok. Then I found that one of the colours was empty. Just waiting for new supplies to arrive and go through all the maintenance jobs that you have very kindly provided videos for and get it all up back up and running. Do you think there may be two versions of this printer and one is without a chip? Could it be that that chip may have been causing too many errors? Again many thanks for providing the info. Mike
@@Knowhow1 One thing I did notice though was the absorber pads were in three layers. The two bottom ones were about the same thickness as shown in your video. then there was a much thicker (half inch) third pad that went on the very top. This pad only had a very minor build-up of ink so I left that one alone. When the ink arrives I will see how I get on.
Hi Know How, I've just finished dismantling my MFC-J4610DW (yay but eeeeek) and am ready to wash the ink pads. I wondered about the re-taping down of the plastic. I see that a section of the plastic is full of holes so presumably the holes need to remain untaped? And what to use for taping the rest - cellotape? 🙏
Electrical or duct tape would work, or masking tape. I wouldn’t think cellotape would have enough grip on the plastic and might come apart. Only tape the edges down, and any tears. Try to leave the breather holes untaped as much as you can :)
Hi I have followed your instructions which were great, however restarting my printer I am getting the error stating that “My Cover is Open’ even though it is not. So I do not know how to fix this. I have fulled the machine apart and rechecked that I put everything back together correctly and it all fits correctly. Is this something that I have broken in the process?
@@najelb6707 have you entered 80 to access the purge menu and you are in the menu where you can select purge ? If you have your sound turned down you won’t hear the beep so go back into that menu and select purge again to see if the count has reset to 00000
After I cleaned the ink absorber as your video shows and put everything back I still get the message ink absorber is full and I can't activate the Home button, it doesn't light up. I have a Brother DCP-J4110DW Have you any advice how I can activate the Home button to get further?
Hello, do you have tutorial for MFC-6910DW? Local Brother service center refuse to do service on discontinued products. Product still works fine, it's not necessary to change to a new printer. just need to replace the ink absorber.. Thanks.
Thanks a lot for that video, great explanation and very easy to follow. Unfortunately I still am unable to print. I tried cleaning the Ink Absorber Box, resetting the purge and flush count and I also left it unplugged for half an hour to turn it back on afterwards, as you reccomended in the comment section, but I still see the status "Ink Absorber full". Do you have any advice on what I can do/what could be the problem? And would you think it makes sense to buy a new ink absorber box, to see if maybe it just won't accept my freshly recycled one :)? Thanks again, you videos are supergreat!
Need advice. After replacing the ink absorber pads successfully the document feeder is not working. The Brother printer no longer sense that there are documents in the feeder. I can no longer fax a bunch of pages. Would welcome any advice
I followed your instructions to reset the counter when showing the error of Ink Box Full. On completion the message was still there so I decided to turn it off & on. Sadly it won't come back on. Any ideas please?
I'm trying this on a Brother MFC-J5720DW. Everything is the same until 1:30 in the video (except I have 8 wiring connectors to remove, not just the 4). I can't get the scanner cover off. This model has a rear paper feeder which seems to be getting in the way. It doesn't allow the scanner cover to lift up vertical. I applied considerable force and the left side popped out but the right still wont come off. Any tips?
Probably to late for you but might help someone else reading this. While working on my J885dw I removed all visible screws and still couldn't get cover to budge. I found that by removing ALL doors (ink cartridges, rear paper feed etc) cover came of easily.
i have a brother DCP 720DW which was working fine until a few days ago but as the printer was not printing cyan and yellow properly, i ran ink cleaning a few times and while printing, it suddenly started leaking ink from below the ink tank location..suddenly all my ink started oozing out and drained most of my ink within few minutes. . the printer is still working / printing but am afraid to fill up the ink again as it might be messy .. could it be a full ink absorber box or maybe something inside is broken ?
Did you reset the purge and flush counters ? If you have, shut down the printer and unplug for around 10-15 minutes and then power back on. It can take up to a couple of days for the message to resolve, but you should still be able to use the printer.
Because of the error message, I couldn’t get the purge to go through. After I did another reset, the purge started. Afterward, I was able to print 1 light page before the error came back. I contacted brother and after I explained what I already did, they recommended doing a purge as well. They then said I needed to replace the box. I have found them online, but I just don’t understand why a new bow would work when my cleaned, dried and taped box didn’t. I know this worked for other people, but could there be some sort of sensor that isn’t letting the error clear?
Don’t waste your money on a new box if you’ve already cleaned yours. To resolve the error msg - Turn off your printer to do a hard reset - unplug after shutting down for at least 10 mins. If error msg is still there, you need to reset the counters again. Don’t forget the flush colour and black counters and the purge count. As for the light pages it’s either: ink nozzles need cleaning by either power purging or if that doesn’t work after at least 3 attempts, or the print head needs cleaning (via settings) or it could be paper scraps on the print head.
@@Knowhow1 I don’t want to claim victory yet, BUT after clearing every counter I could and doing 2 print head cleanings, the test page came back good AND I was able to print out a 3 page order without an error message. Thank you for your time and effort. You don’t know what a stress reliever this is, so again thank you and keep making great videos :-)
On machine J4510DW having replaced the absorber box the casing under the scanner was difficult to reassemble and although I did manage to fit all the screws and everything seems ok when fitting the scanner assy. less support arm the scanner remains partially open and prevents the scanner from operating with code 30 showing. The new absorber box appears to be identical to the one removed. My support arm is all plastic unlike yours in the video and I still cannot get it to install correctly Any suggestions please.
My MFC40DW seems tobe duffereny tiyour video Different No's of screws,no tag holdeing ribbon, different scanner prop and i am stuck. Have got scanner off but don't seem to be able to get any further. Please advize?
Please please please re-record this with better lighting and steady, full focus. I really needed this and it’s so helpful, but navigating through the lack of focus and dark lighting made it extra difficult for this beginner. Thank you!
Thanks for the videos. I used them to replace the ink absorber on my MFC-J4510DW. I reset the purge and print colour and black. However, I still have the message coming up "Ink Absorber Nearly Full" . Can this be cleared? Many thanks for any help. Mike
Michael Aldworth the message will usually go away after a few prints, but did you also reset the flush count? Rest that too by going through the same steps as the purge count. ruclips.net/video/ANCokAwTwxo/видео.html If error msg is still there, try doing a hard start- Try unplugging the printer for 10 mins, then plug back in while holding down the power button. Keep the button down until it’s finished start up, snd the Home Screen is displayed.
Hello I have a problem. Take out the sponge, clean the sensor. But the alert message does not allow me to access the menu. Do you know how I can solve it?
Okay, I followed your instructions and was able to install a new ink absorber pad and get everything reconnected, then followed your other video to reset the purge and BK/Color counters. I fired it up an printed a double-sided page right away and it worked perfectly. But the second page I went to print got jammed. I pulled it out but now the printer continually says "paper jam front/rear,: and even after I check the paper tray, under the scanner cover, and the rear, finding no paper (not even small tears), the paper jam error won't go away. What could I have done? the paper that jammed did not have a tear in it, it came out complete. Help!
You might need it slowly dismantle it again and thoroughly check for any debris or tiny paper pieces in the top end of the printer and paper feed. First check there’s nothing behind the print head- move the print head to the centre by pressing the x / cancel or stop / exit button. Turn off and unplug power at the wall. See if there’s any visible obstructions / paper / staples / hard ink residue behind the print head- move it slightly if you need to. Plug in and turn back on and hopefully the error is gone. If not, take apart and have a very thorough check if anything became in the paper feed areas while you had dismantled it for the ink absorber
Hello there, after cleaning the absorber pad and reassembling going into maintenance mode still showing Absorber pad full , I enter code 46 and what shows is EXPORT TO CARD. Using the up arrow gives options import from card and Import all. ???? any clue as to how to get back to where I need to be in maintenance mode? Thanks.
It sounds like you’re entering 46 as the function code instead of 80. Try entering maintenance mode again and the steps for clearing purge and flush counts

It's been less used than mine, and Its ink absorber is only half full, so I've also got that as a spare, not to mention every other part I might be able to use!
Combined with reset everything I could find, and a new set of sponges I bought on ali-express, this was perfect. Thank you so much!
Thank you! Just successfully cleaned my ink absorber box and reset purge count on my J4310 DW. I had to follow the alternate instructions (in comments) to get in maintenance mode and then after resetting purge, I had to power off and on to fully clear message. Printer is working great. I could not be more pleased :)
Could you tell me where I can find the maintenance code ,please ?🙏 my printer is mfc j 245
How can i purge my brother 240
Worked perfectly on DCP-J4110DW, the only difference is that there isn't a crew in the part you need to unplug some cables, but the rest is exactly the same. Nice video tutorial
Thank you! Glad it helped you out :)
hello glad to see your printer was the same as mine. would you share your tips here on which plugs need to be unpluged to make the "ink absorber full" error message disappear?
Thanks for your video, great help with an old 2nd hand printer!
A little tip for cleaning the 2nd absorber pad at 3:09. I couldn't lift any ink (seemed very dry), so I put a little amount of water on the paper towel and dabbed the pad ... it loosened up the dry ink from the pad. Repeated a few times with wet then dry paper towels and the pad ended up almost ink free.
Thanks for posting this video. I used it to guide me thru disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly of a J4420 printer. The only change I made was to remove the electrical connector that goes to the ink
Printer tray in order to remove the tray.
No wonder there are so many printers in the landfill.
Suche Absorber voll für Brother MFC-J470 DW Das Zurücksetzen klappt nicht, da es dort keine Hometaste gibt
So relieved to see your post - I have the same model, 12 years old but still as good as new except for the "ink absorber near full" message LOL. I am ordering a replacement box but it doesn't come with installation instructions, this video will be invaluable as will your commentary for this model in particular! Thank you!
thanks for this! had this printer for over 8 years and worked flawless until recently. i didnt clean the pad, but rather ordered a new one from wallmart for $40. your explanation is very detailed and is extremely helpful! thanks for this video, along with the other on how to reset the ink pad error. thumbs up!
Thank you! 🙏
thank you for 2 perfect fixes paper jam (also needed a foam piece to get the lever to return) and ink absorber is now clean and no more 5 minute reset every time I want to print.
I just needed to get in far enough to reseat the display panel connector but your vid was perfect. Thanks so much for saving my printer and my time!
I bought a new absorber and fixed my MFC-J4420DW following your instructions, thank you soooo much!
Where did you buy your absorber pad? thx
Brilliant, thanks, solved the problem. Video not always very clear but good enough to do what really matters. Messy business though, with all that ink in the absorber! I got the "absorber full" message afterwards as well, but managed to reset that too. Thanks for posting this, saved me the purchase of a new printer.
Was it an easy job to do yourself?
Thanks a bunch for sharing. I did experience the issue below, but just ignore the "Machine Error46" message and enter 80 as instructed.
1. Press Home button for 5 seconds.
2. Press blank entry on displayed list for 5 seconds.
3. Entered code *2864
4. "Machine Error46" is displayed.
Just ignore the error and proceed to enter 80. The machine will enter maintenance mode and you can then perform the purge.
Again, thank you! Btw, your accent and clear annunciation are wonderful.
Thank you !
Thank you!!!!😶The only video which helps me to change the ink absorber! Wonderful!!!!
I’m so glad it helped you :)

Merci beaucoup pour cette vidéo. Grace à vous je me suis dépassée aujourd'hui et j'en suis très fière. Merci beaucoup 🥰🙏💪
Just another thank you - I fixed my printer. You've done a good job.
Where did you buy a replacement ink absorber? Im having trouble finding one.
They are hard to find. I cleaned and reused mine.
Excellent video, I used on MFC-J4410DW, works great, many thanks from Panama
Great video.
Just as a point, the left (small) pad can become swollen from absorbing too much ink and cause smearing on the print head. I was able to reach it without disassembly and pat it with a paper towel slightly damp with diluted Windex. (about 10:1 Water:Windex), repeating until the pad was almost ink free. (I found it amazing, how much ink it can hold.)
Disclaimer:
Using any kind of solvent is not recommended by the manufacturer, so use it at your own risk. I've found that diluted Windex appears to be safe for all printers I've owned.

Make sure it is diluted and allow the sponge pad to dry before operating the printer.
Sehr gutes Video. Very good Video. Thank you very much. I've a MFC4410DW. Since years I'm very happy with it.
Have you still got the error message ? It should have cleared within 2 days or so (if it didn’t straight away).
I think maybe I've burst ink tubes(?)
I've yet to try printing with again, I moved on to a different machine. (all Brothers)
I've also got a Brother J5720-DW, practically brand new with blocked colour nozzles. :'(
I guess I'll try syringe clean method on that next.
@@mr.a8315 and thank you so much for the donation! I truly appreciate that and am so grateful 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks , it works
For sealing I use an iron and a new plastic wrap putting a baking paper between the iron and the plastic
This is a great idea and is much more aesthetically pleasing than the tape!
Danke jetzt läuft mein Drucker wieder ohne Probleme.
Super instructions. Saved us time and money. Appreciate the guide. Thanks.
Will have to see what happens next...
...or perhaps the pad at the detector was not dry enough when i put it back in?
This worked on my MFC-J4710DW printer! Thank you!!!
Thanks for the video. I replaced the ink absorber with an entire new one. When I put everything back together I got an error message that the scanner cover is open (when it’s clearly closed). Any advice on a fix? Thanks!
Thank you :)
I've just fixed my 4410 :)
Great! May i change the pad of my Brother MFC J 5320DW in the same way? I ordered a new pad but i have to change it myself.
Thank you very much for sharing this video. It was very helpful!
Rob
Great video thanks. Is this the ONLY ink absorber in the MFC-J4620DW printer?
Very helpful video! Thank you!
Do you have to replace the flushing box also or is that the same thing as the ink absorber box??
Can you do video for mfc-j6920dw
Can you advise how to find your video on this item
sure thing - ruclips.net/video/tKy26kc9Yok/видео.html - I hope this helps
After doing everything as instructed, now my machine doesn't print blacka at all. Do you have any idea if it's related? Thanks for the great video anyway
Great, just great explained
Thanks much for this video.
I’m keep getting blank pages now, I’m seeing no error codes, I did clean the auto head cleaning and manual clean as well but no luck…
Can you please share if you have an idea to fix the blank pages?
Is there any ink at all on the page or completely blank ? You may need to dismantle again and make sure all the wires, and tubing are connected properly. You could try a power purge, but it sounds more like a connection was missed on installation : ruclips.net/video/P-pXJTtlkFM/видео.html
Great help, thank you
Unfortunately my MFC-J6930DW (with it's ink absorber saturated) is constructed significantly differently, so removing the scanner cover does not seem to be as easy as "pushing away from you", the scan cover arm is also a bit more tricky to unclip.
In the MFC-J9630DW the ink absorber box is accessed from the bottom, it's a rectangular box held in by two screws, thus easy to remove.
However, the problem on mine is the 'ink absorber pad' under the cartridges and it's 'wick' that descends through the bottom of the printer into the 'ink absorber box'
It's become saturated after many attempts to fix 'smudged ink' by using the clean printheads maintenance routine.
While I can remove the 'ink absorber box' from below... getting inside the machine to access the 'ink absorber pad & it's wick' is proving probematic!
I'm having this issue exactly on my 6930 as well. Did you ever fix yours? If so, any tips?
I had this issue aswell on my dcp printer, it was an issue until I noticed how to do it. It won't come off right away like you see in the video but you need to put a bit of pressure at the bottom of the handle, there's some kind of tab there that wipp make it a lot easier to get out.
his is beyond me. Where might I get repair done in NE Florida? Thank you.
2 ) Press the Mono Start Key several times until the purge or flushing count appears on the LCD display.( mine took about 25 pushes)
3 ) Press the 2,7,8, and 3 keys in this order to reset the purge or flushing count.
I have another video which includes resetting the purge count aswell - ruclips.net/video/ANCokAwTwxo/видео.html
Sometimes you need to do this as well like you said, particularly after cleaning the ink absorber box
Thank you for the video! Much appreciate!!! regards

@@Knowhow1 Thank you very much.
I have the same issue. Did you ever find a fix? Thanks!

After I cleaned the ink absorber as your video shows and put everything back I still get the message ink absorber is full and I can't activate the Home button, it doesn't light up. I have a Brother DCP-J4110DW
Have you any advice how I can activate the Home button to get further?
Hello, do you have tutorial for MFC-6910DW? Local Brother service center refuse to do service on discontinued products. Product still works fine, it's not necessary to change to a new printer. just need to replace the ink absorber.. Thanks.
Thank you ! this video helped me a lot!
Thank you for your tutorial! Was a great help!
I have a DCP-J4110DW. and cleaned the absorber following your excellent video.but i still get the error46 code.how can i remove that?
Did you reset the purge and flush counters ? If you have, shut down the printer and unplug for around 10-15 minutes and then power back on. It can take up to a couple of days for the message to resolve, but you should still be able to use the printer.
I cleaned the pads, reset the counter, but it still prints light/blank. Any suggestions?
Maybe the pads were still slightly wet or too compressed?
It sounds like the ink nozzles need to be purged - ruclips.net/video/P-pXJTtlkFM/видео.html

On machine J4510DW having replaced the absorber box the casing under the scanner was difficult to reassemble and although I did manage to fit all the screws and everything seems ok when fitting the scanner assy. less support arm the scanner remains partially open and prevents the scanner from operating with code 30 showing. Michael Aldworth the message will usually go away after a few prints, but did you also reset the flush count? Rest that too by going through the same steps as the purge count. ruclips.net/video/ANCokAwTwxo/видео.html
If error msg is still there, try doing a hard start- Try unplugging the printer for 10 mins, then plug back in while holding down the power button. Keep the button down until it’s finished start up, snd the Home Screen is displayed.
@@Knowhow1 thanks for quick reply. Yes I did the flush as per your other video. Will try your suggestion. Thank you. Mike
Hello I have a problem. Take out the sponge, clean the sensor. But the alert message does not allow me to access the menu. Do you know how I can solve it?
Wow Thank you very helpful
Will this work on a Mfc - j475DW model?
If not, take apart and have a very thorough check if anything became in the paper feed areas while you had dismantled it for the ink absorber
can we use 2200w hair dryer to solve it?
Any hairdryer, just be careful not to burn it, or blow it out of shape too much
Hello there, after cleaning the absorber pad and reassembling going into maintenance mode still showing Absorber pad full , I enter code 46 and what shows is EXPORT TO CARD. Using the up arrow gives options import from card and Import all. ???? any clue as to how to get back to where I need to be in maintenance mode? Thanks.
It sounds like you’re entering 46 as the function code instead of 80. Try entering maintenance mode again and the steps for clearing purge and flush counts

@@Knowhow1 as Homer Simpson might say...DOAH! Could have been as you said, I did find another procedure in the service manual , perhaps it is the same as the one you provided..... any way I posted the Brother procedure from the manual as it may help others like me. Now I have a headache. Thanks again my printer is up and running.
For those that adventurous amateur printer repair folk that make it here - a link to the brother service manual - I downloaded this and ran an anti virus scan and it came out clean....check yourselves if you go and get it !! kupdf.net/download/brother-mfc-j4625dw-service-manual_596e5313dc0d602f66a88e7f_pdf#
Thanks. This is great.
I have used this Video for the second time today to clean out my mfc4620dw. The first time I used it all went well, but today the maintenance screen just bleeps when I try and press anything, and it won’t even let me turn the printer off or exit the menu. Any ideas of what I can do?
Thank you for saving me :)
How do you clear the "cover is open" prompt in maintenance mode?
How often should it to be cleaned?
Every 8000 pages or so, but can depend on a few factors
Bonjour , pourriez vous m'indiquer le code erreur qui correspond au remplacement de l'absorbeur d'encre merci beaucoup
After following and successfully installing the new ink absorber, the printer now says:
Paper Jam [front,Rear]
There is no paper!
What could be the problem???
I have gone over it 5 more times reattaching the parts carefully but cannot find why it’s saying there’s a jam.
