Hi Greg, Dan here from Alberta Canada. It’s good to see how you deal with winter grazing conditions. We deal with winter conditions for 4-5 months usually, so lots of bale grazing for us. A week ago we had -42C wind chills already this winter.
Thanks for the video! Have you seen the prices of feeder cattle now? There’s definitely not many cattle out there. I’m unrolling hay and bale grazing now. I have some stockpile, but not very much. My plan is to roll hay out where there’s been cover crops since 2021. It has been reseeding itself for that many years, but now I want it into perennial pasture with a diversity of plants. I’ve been doing small sections every year doing it this way. It is crazy how it has improved my forage. I’m so glad I found you in RUclips.
Hope the new association works out great. I get excited every time I see red cattle in mid-TN. Fellow has a few just down the road from me. Of course he's letting 'em continuously graze the same ground and it's awful. Some day I'll ask him what he has. My first guess is red Angus. I checked the records, he has 21 acres of hillside, 75% wooded.
Fall calving appears to be a better thing than the "standard" winter calving. I hate seeing all the heavy cows out there (the common herds) knowing they're due in the dead of winter, and we're not there yet. Of course Spring is best!
thanks Grg! We didn't know cattle either so we found people like you to learn from! We only have the one 3/4 cow and her calf we bought from you and have decided to AI the rest of our girls with Judy semen.
Have you ever had Devon cattle they are doing well in many areas. They have made great improvements for me once I found the right genetics within the breed
"If you don't have grass, don't get cattle". Good advice. Greg, too bad the guy that does You Tubes from Greene NY didn't listen to you! I doubt that Salatin got through to him either. Don't have 3 times more cattle than you have grass. A two week recovery rotation don't cut it. "Best Grass Fed Beef In NY State!" NOT.
They both are learning and have come along ways from where they started. Sometimes it just takes time and making some mistakes to learn that there are things that you can improve on. They are both very hard workers and I am rooting for them to be successful in their endeavors.
Greg, I’ve been looking at Red Devon’s out of Lakota ranch in VA to start my herd, do you have any experience with this breed in your past? You said nothing can do what a south poll does on grass, but they’re claiming the same with the red Devon’s. Just curious if you had any experience with them and what it was you didn’t like about them if you did, thanks!
My neighbors here in the Finger Lakes region of NY state have had Red Devons for 25 years. I was skeptical when they got them but I must admit they stay fat and productive on nothing but grass and hay for a few months in the winter. I have no experience with South Polls but the Red Devons may be better suited for a northern climate.
I used to watch videos like that guy and just send them to your channel and hope for the best. It’s amazing to me that at this stage people don’t know of managed grazing but sometimes it takes 3-4 different sources to break through. I think the new administration will get things rolling. 🐄
Maybe after they take your social security, medicare, V. A. Benefits, right to unionize, and "you might not need to vote again", they'll get around to taking your cows and giving them to a billionaire. " For your own good". Y'all didn't notice the 'pandemic' started almost the exact same day the last "administration" started? What's their next plan?
Lovely to watch in the snow, that's a happy herd. I look forward to hearing about developments on the new farm, I am sure it is safe to assume it does not involve a Mac-Mansion.
Good morning. Beautiful brrrrry morning! Congrats on being the keynote speaker at the inaugural South Poll Association meeting. Well deserved honor.
Great video,thanks for sharing!❤

Your cattle don't just survive winter, they thrive!
Yes they do, and they thrive all the rest of the year too. Greg is a shining example of how to manage pastures and animals.
west plains is a nice little town thats where porter wagner lived

I would try a few of each breed on your farm and then decide for yourself.

@practicalsheepman Great folks and beautiful farm and cattle. You are lucky to be farming in lodi. What do you have for sheep

What's their next plan?
Some folks just plain don't deserve animals. They should lease their land to those who DO get it, and go work in town, or something else.

Hoping they got the remaining plots 👍
@@chrish1657 Ah; yes, that never occurred to me.
