M1 pickup pattern was definitely facing the wrong direction. Almost guaranteed you had it set to rear directional. It should not be that big of a difference and the quality is generally what it sounds like when you're talking from behind a shotgun mic - low volume and slightly muffled.

Agreed. I use the ECM-M1 and get far better audio with it than shown here. It may have been something as simple as the wrong pattern selected accidentally.

What happened with that M1 audio? There's no way that's accurate.

To be honest , the other videos I have watched nailed it !! Perhaps your directional options were set wrongly . I wish I could insert a link on one of the reviewers here . He tested all directions and they were pretty awesome . Could you do us a favor by doing another video showing us all the directional options please ?

Hey man, inthink your test gone wrong.. are you sure you didn't have the dial turned into back mic in b1? It's even quite easy to hear it. I watched a few others comparisons a the difference between them was hard to hear, definitely not that huge like in your test.

im positive......everyone i know has the same issue and only rubberbands work with some shock noise....it also depends on lenses....some dont vibrate as much as others when focusing

Thanks for saying this I thought I was crazy. Detroit, they're not talking about your rattle test they're talking about the comparison. I think the M1 sounds pretty clearly switched to the wrong pattern

Where exactly are you putting the rubber band?- Any video showing exactly where to put the rubberband to? like zooming in after the rubber band?

I use the ECM-B1M on an older FDR-AX33. I set it to analog rather than digital. I discovered that if I use the directional shotgun setting I loose the needed background audio when I have to pan the camera for action surrounding me. I have to remember to use the middle setting. I shoot multi-sided events like Confederate versus Union musket fire. I often fall back on my ECM-XYST1M which is stereo. BTW As a fellow RUclipsr I made sure to give this well presented video a 👍.

That big rig with the MKE600 and XLR adapter isn't too much weight for the hot shoe? Something like that would usually need a cage of some sort that the camera and mic attach to.
There is also the Sennheiser MKE440 which is a stereo mic and might be better than either.

No def not too much weight....it actually feels really solid

Rubber bands! How did I not think of this by now?! Thank you!

Does the mke 400 also create these banging noises? Just sent my ECM-M1 back because I thought it was faulty. I am thinking about to get a MKE 400 for run and gun shootings for my A7IV and an additional Zoom Hn1 Essentials for ambient and stereo sounds. Any other recommendations or should I give the ECM-M1 another try?

How about Sennheiser MKE 440 compare to these? I plan to use them for headshot, environment, and I hope I can use the mic to experiment and record singing and instrutments too. Can I use these Sony mics on non Sony camera? I plan to get the Sennheiser MKE 440 on a camcorder I plan to buy too, Panasonic HC-X1500, the camcorder has an optional grip with LED and 2 XLR input, that Sennheiser MKE 440 seem like one of its kind and better stand standard shotgun mic, do you think so and if so, does thee grip still necessary because it going to be bulky and it mainly is to attach a standard shotgun mic and does the XLR going to provide noticeable better than. The 3.5mm jack input mics? And also us 32 bits record necessary over 24 or 16 bits?

i had the same thoughts as you!!! reviewing it now and been using it for a few weeks, i love it.....hate the wire but love it....its much lower and fits the angle of the body better....give it a shot, if you dont like it you can always return it

I thought they fixed the mount noise for the ecm-m1. My b10 has horrible mount noise.

Great video. I made a comparison a while ago, and found the b1m and even the b10 to be superior to the m1. The small G1 is very underrated.
