No driver is perfect, but as long as you are observant and don’t speed then you are a good driver
As long as you are patient, observant and drive according to the speed limit and conditions then you are a good driver but everyone makes errors
I rode a motorcycle before a car. I think that gave me more road sense than anything: the visual restrictions wearing a helmet, and the vulnerability of having only two wheels. Only ONE way to ride: defensively. I'm told I drive like I was still biking eg. always doing "life-savers" and NOT RELYING just on mirrors, my style of driving to a plan: looking a long way ahead, my observation of signs, road cambers/conditions, hedge-lines/street lighting, vehicle and pedestrian activity etc., but also in aiming to break/accelerate in a straight line, road-positioning, and so forth. (I am not a professional driver by the way.)

i was impressed with the crossing guard. He stood his ground and potentially prevented an accident.

I've been a subscriber for many years of this channel and I must say as someone who's been driving many years and never had an accident that I've learnt so much from watching your videos. Learned to drive around 40 years old. Was a keen cyclist before, but needed to learn as I started a family. 20 years later I've done pretty well on London streets, you have a great channel.
I have been driving 28 years and in all honesty I haven't seen a fraction of what you witness every day. Some of your clips are staggering.

We all make mistakes but to go through red lights seconds after they have gone red is outrageous.
Everyone knows a yellow is fair game but when it gets to a red there’s a real danger
Exactly. There's a difference between a genuine mistake, and egregious incidents of red light jumping (and excessive speeding) that are obviously deliberate, perpetuated by people who have no regard for the lives of others. Should be made to take a trip down the local mortuary.
I can't help but wonder just how much safer our roads would be if people just had a little patiences.
Also just gonna throw this out; now that the gritters are out in force, it's a good idea to wash your car if possible and rinse the salt off. Also when stopping at traffic lights please try and not block off junctions, an ambulance might need to get in there and it's not exactly useful when you're in the way.
I wouldn't worry, give it a year there won't be any ambulances to block off

R R you’re right, but I would still do it in most cases. It’s pretty obvious in this situation that theres no danger in going around the car, of course it would require basic danger checks that you do unconsciously (like looking at the other driver to see if he isnt trying to move back, checking for traffic behind the car, bikes etc..)
@@blanco7726 I still wouldn't recommend that. The other drive may decide to reverse, another car might appear or other cars might follow your example and not make the checks you did. It is best just to wait and let the person clear the road. You might have to wait an extra 30 sec or a min, but better than getting involved in an additional incident or making the situation worst.
How can people say driving instructors promote bad habits. From all these clips the most sensible actions usually come from the learner cars!
My driving instructor started mentioning a couple of the things he teaches being on the list of things people tend to forget the most quickly after getting their driver's license, with looking over their shoulder, using their mirrors and in a traffic jam, letting a gap start to exist in front of you and then just advance forward in 1st or 2nd gear on the clutch only, so you can just coast slowly and probably when the people in front of you can move forward a bit you won't have to tap the brakes.
Especially that last one is something I see almost no one do.
I've got a class D PCV licence. I like to think that I drive in a professional manner. And then I see some other so-called professionals driving buses and lorries and shake my head in despair. And your private hire/taxi drivers up there are just as bad as the ones were have in Wolverhampton. Keep educating us all, Ashley. All the best, mate. 👍🏼
I'm a professional delivery van driver with 22 years on the road I also have a heavy goods licence, modified cars and driving is my passion/hobby but I still enjoy watching your videos and other dash cam compilations, it definitely helps you learn what to expect, I often correctly predict what crazy things people are about to do on the roads.
I used to be an escort on a minibus, and the driver was a shocking driver. She many times, reversed into walls
Great end to what must be a fantastic year for you and so well deserved bud, I've been driving for 32 years and still learning things every day both on the road and off you. Lets hope that everybody's new year's resolutions for 2020 is to be more PATIENT & THOUGHTFUL on our roads.
I've had a full UK licence for 27 years and counting. I still believe you can learn something new every drive. I enjoy your videos so much because they are instructional, even to us "veteran" drivers and I love how calm you remain in situations that would have most of us reaching for the horn, the brake and the dashcam... Usually in that order!
Passed my motorcycle test in '84 ,car in '94 & cat c lgv (class 2) this December (2019). Hopefully do c+e soon.(class 1)
Never stop learning throughout ya driving how bad some people can be , but with experience gained you hopefully learn how 2 deal with them all 2 & to keep yourself and others safe n accident free..

@@thinkos6730 Even the most experienced of drivers can still learn from this channel. Nobody is infallible. I happen to be one of those with significant experience and use this channel with good reason. Never too old to pick up good points. Just don't get complacent. Everybody makes mistakes ok. Stay safe.

I've been driving 60 years almost every day and yet I'm still learning. I still read the 'The Highway code' . I wonder how many motorists do the same? Not many watching your video's. Thanks for all the imformation.
I live in Western Australia, but watch your videos. I thought the drivers down here were bad and we do have the occasional Red light jumper but we do not have as many as you seem to get. I am 70 and have practiced Defensive driving for years and can see that is what you practice and preach. There is not much difference between driving in WA as the UK, we drive on the same side of the road. My 16 year old granddaughter has just got her learners permit and I am trying to encourage her to watch some of your videos as it will help her with her driving.
Definitely helpful Ashley, I've been watching all your videos since learning to drive a few months ago, and despite failing my first test a couple weeks back, I managed to get a cancellation last minute and passed my 2nd test this Tuesday just gone, with 3 faults - 2 of which were stalling as I was paranoid after 33 minutes of nothing going wrong and thinking I'd done nothing to warrant a fail (despite being super anxious during it) that's when I stalled 2x haha.
Long story short, you, DGN Driving and Drive London channels have helped me with extra revision and real life examples of what to avoid and what not to do. I'm already in my first car and these videos will still be watched and learned from.

18:00 This happened to me recently. They were pretty close after cutting in front of me, then slowed rapidly to pull off the road. I started slowing when I realised they were changing lanes, but had to brake hard as they continued. Missed them by centimetres. At least they were indicating, I guess. The lessons for me: 1. Expect others to change lanes with little (or no) warning. 2. Be willing to brake hard at short notice, and maintain space in front even when it vanishes suddenly. 3. Be aware when you're in someone's blind spot (and don't expect them to check properly). 4. If you miss a lane-change or a turn, suck it up and keep going, rather than attempting a desperate manoeuvre.
I've been driving for many years but still get a lot out of your videos. They are a constant reminder how vigilant you have to be and how to be prepared for any situation. I would be keen to see another video on motorway driving some time.
"Getting the message out there to promote good quality driving on the road" sums this up nicely!
Great to see so many constructive comments from other subscribers. Even those of us with many years of experience can (and sometimes do) make occasional mistakes so it proves that everyone can learn from this channel.
Sadly, despite Ashley's best efforts, I think that there will always be a need for this type of channel - we are never going to eradicate the idiots out there.
Human error is responsible for at least 95% of "accidents". That is unlikely to change - at least not in my lifetime.

Correct, and that is the reason people shouldn't be using the word "accident" unless they know the cause of the collision was not due to human error. It's an insult to the families of those who were killed or seriously injured by dangerous, careless or distractive driving.

One of the best snippets of advice.......don't drive angry. Probably as bad as intoxicated.
The trouble is these clowns usually believe they are great drivers.
Sadly those that drive safely have to share the road with the clowns and risk their own lives.

Shame now there seems to be more clowns than ever and careful/reasonable drivers have to share the same roads with them.
A little tip that my dad shared with me and my brothers is to always drive naked. Hear me out: In the event of a road rage incident, all you have to do is step out of your car and you de-esculate the situation 100% of the time. Nobody wants a confrontation with a naked man - win or lose.
However, my dad was also a driver is currently in Broadmoor, but we still love him and feel his sage driving advice has served us well in terms of conflict resolution.
Like the fact that you take the young apprentices out in the dark, and the rain. Personally I drive an artic for work and like to think that I do it professionally. I still have a copy of the highway code with me. I passed my car test in 1986, my HGV class one in 1992, and still consider myself as continuing to learn.
These are some of the best instructional videos I've seen on RUclips. They've certainly helped to improve my own safety awareness and driving skills.

I always tell my children every time they drive their car they are still learning. Passing the test is actually the easy bit.

So much of what you say in your videos reminds me of my own tuition in the mid 2000's. I thought then that my instructor was a good one, looking back now i cant say my opinion has changed at all

I really enjoy watching as it does remind me how important it is to keep my own standards high, even though I am an ex instructor and advance driving examiner. I only wish the bad drivers in your clips and others shown on RUclips could see themselves. I have one suggestion, why it is important to look left when turning left out of a junction as well as looking into the junction as you turn in. Lots of drivers fail to do this and the consequences can be catastrophic.

I have first hand experience of this, Alan.
I was working for BT and up a telegraph pole at the time. The pole was situated at the exit of a garage in Ongar, Essex, on a straight stretch of road. As I worked away, suddenly there was a blood curdling skidding sound that seemed to go on forever and according to my colleague, I just clung to the pole as he was in fits of laughter at ground level!! You can probably imagine what had happened, someone overtaking with someone exiting and not checking.
Given my mates reaction, ie, high hilarity, there was no bad outcome and maybe some lessons learnt, but it could have been very different. For a start, I may not be here now to watch Ashleys great material.
Van drivers are the worst, I was sitting in my work van with somebody else driving and the standard of driving was dreadful.
With regard to offending drivers seeing them selves doing stupid things Alan. I suspect that they really couldn't give a fiddler's fanny!. In fact I suspect the queue jumpers and the like, whilst all other drivers wait patiently, give themselves a huge pat on the back and feel really pleased with themselves having got one over everyone else.

This actually makes me think Northampton isnt that bad... and thats as a bus driver lol.
In all fairness though, some of these clips are shocking, that guy on the school crossing don't know what he was thinking.
I have given a good scare to a ups driver before though. Blocking my lane pulling out onto the A6 (50mph road), looking the other way for a gap in a long line of traffic. Didn't blast the horn like I normally would, just slowed right down and pulled up to him. He practically jumped out his seat when he turned his head and saw me as he pulled off.

I agree with your comment about the CBT. I know a rider who renews his every 2yrs (on his 3rd) & is happy to ride on Ls. Many Bikers would agree riding helps when driving a car, Because you need to be aware of potential situations & act accordingly.
Great montage, really enjoying the videos and appreciate the time it takes to edit them. Ure a credit to ure profession especially in the quest of trying to make a change in people's perceptions of learners and being considerate and respectful towards them. Some people though as you'll know will never change and ultimately it will catch up on them and unfortunately someone else one day who are in their line of sight. #change
I'm a learner from The Netherlands. Wednesday I did an emergency brake. Somebody reversed out fast of a parking space without looking. There was a cyclist next to me. I had her in view. But because of my quick thinking, the cyclist had more surviving space. The driver turned without noticing the cyclist. Squeezing her between their car and the other parked cars. I had all 3 mirrors and windshield in view. My instructor was very impressed. It was scary but I kept calm.

Some truly awful drivers outt there. I try not to get rattled or upset when driving but it’s not always easy.
I’ve been driving about 25 years or so and try to be the better person when there are idiots about.
We’re all human and make mistakes so we need to own and admit them.

First time watching your videos. As an instructor you inspire your pupils by your calm approach, and gentle praise for your pupil when something untoward occurs. This must inspire them!
8:55 one of my ultimate guitly pleasures when driving is when people overtake me above the speed limit, risking speeding tickets left and right, and then at the traffic lights I catch them up, roll up to them at the slowest speed possible and wave at them :) like hey mate, look, speeding got you absolutely nowhere :D
Just subscribed to your channel after watching this video, enjoyed it very much but there really are some shocking drivers out there. It's actually so refreshing to watch a video where the person isn't screaming and shouting but just talking through what's happening and it really does give you a calm and controlled perspective on the situation.
I've had my license for almost 4 years now, but I watch these videos to get a feel for what it's like to drive on the other side of the road. It still feels a little confusing sometimes, but it's not all that different!

For what it's worth, I watch your videos to see if I can learn a thing or two about how to stay safe on the road. When I'm driving, my goal is to get to my destination safely for myself & other motorists on the road. Even though I'm not required to, every two years or so I engage a driving instructor to look at how I'm driving, to see if I am developing any bad habits or not keeping up with law changes. I think as I get older I may have to make that every 18 months or so. My friends think I'm strange for doing it, but so far so good, there's been no accidents & no one around me having them either from something stupid that I caused.
When I passed my CBT about 15 years ago I was unfamiliar with geared bikes and I overshot a left turn and ended up on the opposite side of the road about 1m from the edge.
I still passed. Looking back now I should of been failed. Unless cbts have changed it was pointless day.
Came across your channel by chance and now subscribed, keep up the good work, been driving, bikes and cars for 50yrs, never too old to have 2nd opinion on things you see everyday!.. Across the river in Lytham seems most drivers where given their licences in WW1, never having to read any rules and sit an exam, just don't mention mini roundabouts.... Gone are the days where a young kid @ 16 learnt road craft on 2 wheels before progressing into a 4 wheeled tin can....
Such an insightful compilation . Really good to see the different types of ‘ manoeuvres” people try to do . If there is anything I wish you could show due to the fact that I have never seen them on your clips . Although this may be difficult to do as you may not have many incidents but horses . Overtaking of horses / animals on the road . In our area it is awful and people have no clue how to , where their vehicle should sit and what their vehicle should be doing . It’s just a recipe for disaster . But thanks for all the work . It is appreciated.👍❤️
I've followed your Channel for some time and have (enjoyed?)... watching your various videos & commentaries and reading fellow viewers reactions, to the evidence of so many driving fails, almost too many to mention.
Having spent most of my life living and working in Southern Africa, I thought I'd seen & witnessed everything possible while out driving for both work & pleasure. Since returnining to the UK (Newcastle, Edinburgh & London) it is from my own perspective, obvious I still have much to learn, about driving on UK roads.
In closing, my own pet hates, after all is said & done: hmmmm (!) Folk who continue to use hand held mobiles while out driving and folk who drink alcohol and then get behind a steering wheel.

Excellent series of ‘driving fails’. I recently moved to Southport from Garstang (just north of Preston) after living there for over 65 years. The standard of driving here is appalling with red light jumpers and those who drive in excess of 50mph in the many 20mph zones in the town. I had to fit front and rear cameras in both of my cars for my protection from belligerent Neanderthal drivers. I have been an IAM Advanced Driver for the last 3 years and am currently taking my Master Driver course (now sadly put on hold due to the Coronavirus). Keep up the good work but I doubt if we will ever improve the standard of driving in Merseyside.

Agree about the motorcyclist at 5:20 and just underlines your recent video about blind spots. I have seen many youtube videos of motorcyclists nearly coming to grief when filtering not realising that sometimes other motorists can't actually see them even if they had used their mirrors etc. Very often when you're in slow moving traffic you can hear a motorbike around you way before you can see them.

My first ADI instructor, over twenty-seven years ago, (who was also a rally driver) was really bad and did teach bad habits.
He would not allow you to do the speed-limit, shouting if you did. He once even wanted me to do eighty in a fifty...I won't repeat my response, but it rhymed with clucking bell and ended off. Amber lights meant you don't stop. He told me off for looking at the opposing lanes for red-light jumpers, saying that if they hit you, it's their fault. His reasoning, when I had it out with him, was "I'm teaching you to drive in the real world, not just to pass monkey puzzles". Terrible instructor!
My next instructor was fantastic and worked hard to remove all the bad habits taught by the first prat...passed with zero faults with him. I also took a short refresher course a few years back, and this instructor too, was brilliant. I am now going in for my RoSPA advanced driving in the new year.
My experiences just go to show the differences between a bad instructor and a good one. If you have a bad one, get rid at the earliest possible chance. Sadly, back in the day, I didn't know how to report a bad instructor.
I always wined the window down and shout at them which driving instructor told you to make that manoeuvre
Great video as always, love the perspective you bring to the subject of driving, personally I think red light jumping is increasing and what worries myself, is that people just accept bad driving these days, there is a big difference between making a genuine mistake and deliberately driving badly or even dangerously on purpose.
The face of the woman who wanted herself blurred from the always blame the learner driver is still unblurred in this video at the beginning lol

Can I suggest a video idea? I passed my test at the end of October, but a video on when it’s safe to go through amber lights, like with cars behind or without, it has always confused me and I’m petrified I’m going to accidentally go through a red. Also great content last year really helped me pass

Did the Taxis in Liverpool for 17yrs, watching this video brought back memories as it was a daily battle with idiot drivers, if I had a camera in my taxi I could have supplied you with videos to keep your channel running for years lol.
Ashley, your camera is so good I actually managed to get that black Audi's reg plate at 12:10: SJ15OHF. I hope you have a good system with your local police for reporting such dangerous driving. Looks like he's got about 20% VLT tint on his front windows too, which is illegal.
It's Liverpool - I think the police are far too busy with other things lol.
@@alisonwilliams4862 "other things". Please don't leave ignorant comments. The police's job is literally to protect the public. My local police have a dedicated online submission for dashcam footage and drivers caught running red lights, or using their phone while driving, can still be taken to court and given a fine/points on their licence. But whatever, glad you think it's funny...
@@scareneb It was only half a joke really. If the police dealt with bad drivers all day, they wouldn't have time for anything else! Not to mention the cuts in recent years, resulting in less police. I used to work for the ambulance service and we had to get the police to attend some of our calls. They often had no vehicles available and we had to wait for them to turn up. Plus Liverpool is pretty rough (I know because I live there) and I'm sure they have their work cut out dealing with the 'scallies.' Maybe it's different in other parts of the country though.
@scareneb Theoretically it sounds great but in practice it doesn't work. I had two videos sent with drivers running a red light (one of them was a van that overtook the car in front of him that stopped for that red light, later checked the reg and found he also didn't had a valid MOT) and you know what happened? Absolutely nothing. For the one with the van I had no reply, the other one the police said it was actually amber...(which clearly was not, otherwise I wouldn't had sent the video...). Considering the amount of time spent to fill in the forms (the process is really not that straightforward as it sounds) it made me stop sending other videos (a lot of drivers running red lights recently). So unless something changes this is just something that sounds nice when you hear it on the news...pitty
One time, a bus had pulled up to let some school kids off. As I was passing the bus, a few kids walked out in front of the bus into the middle of the road. If I'd have been moving at any significant speed, no doubt I would have hit them. Always been very cautious of parked vehicles and buses since.
Which just goes to show that you learned from that experience. Thanks for sharing it with us 👍
It’s the same in car parks, you wouldn’t believe how many people walk behind you or in front when reversing
Great video channel Ashley! Huge thank you for your work and I'm a driving instructor too. Sadly, all too tempting to think it's just Liverpool, but here in 'genteel' Cheltenham I have plenty of similar footage saved from my front & rear dash cams! In a word: impatience. Especially at 9:10 in the morning when a substantial portion of drivers should have been at work ... 10 minutes ago. And now your learner is in the way. It's always the learners' fault that other drivers are late for work isn't it?
Thanks for the video, it’s both scary and comforting, let me explain myself, i do the same job as you but in France, and the behaviour of other drivers toward student drivers looks the same from your side of the channel as it is here, what’s scary is that the amount of stupidity also is the same as here... what’s comforting is that we are not alone... I try as much as I can when my students are the victims of such behaviour to tell them to remember when they’ll be confirmed drivers that they were students once and to remember it when they’ll be following a “slow” driving school car.

6:58 literally the same thing happened to me few days ago, except it wasn't a taxi driver, it was another learner car.
It's not over yet! We've still got the Christmas idiots rushing about doing 100mph everywhere they go to get through!

Any views on the need/usefulness of periodic refreshing/retesting as a matter of course, rather than as a response to misdemeanours?
Just like not driving drunk you shouldn’t drive when angry. It’s
up to you to police yourself when angry but you can take a breath, listen to
calm music or simply stop the vehicle where safe and deal with yourself. Even
if you weren’t at fault you soon will be when you get angry. You won’t be the
last person or last time to be cut up and having your right of way taken. But
it will be the last time your licence or LIFE is taken due to speed and clouded
judgement.

Some truly horrendous driving.
I am a lapsed IAM (Motorcyclist) and I always used a method I learned from a helicopter pilot. He said that while flying he was constantly looking for places to put down should an emergency happen.
Whilst I rode my motorbike I always looked for an escape route if say a car pulled out or something dangerous happened. Saved my bacon on many occasions.
The scary thing is that the UK is the fourth best in the world in terms of fatalities per mile driven according to the table on Wikipedia. (Norway, Switzerland, and Sweden are the best.) The rest of us don't stand a chance!
The standard of driving in mainland Europe is far worse than Uk.
Great compilation Ash, I enjoy watching mainly for your incredibly calm approach, I try and adopt the same attitude to my driving even more since being subscribed, I think if every car was fitted with a dash cam (big brother!) then we might just see less crazy driving. Would be nice to have some content about driving abroad. Often gets overlooked. When I was learning and passed my test there was nothing about it at all, I’ve driven thousands of miles in Europe without any problems. Seen a few big collisions though.
Also safe driving limits i.e. weight, size, car + Trailer. Simply put car + trailer, van drivers and even some car drivers seem to misunderstand the rules. Loading their estate Mondeo with 20 or more bags of cement, soil, laminate flooring and plants. They even had the wife and dog there as well 😂
I'm thinking of becoming a driving instructor. I love driving, always have.
Just subscribed to your channel. These clips are an eye opener. Awareness is everything. Seems like Liverpool City Council need to invest in red light cameras. It would pay for more corruption at the council, but that's another story.
Spot on regarding CBT and should all these L be able to retake year after year without passing test ..
Should companies who use CBT riders be forced to employ only fully licensed bikers or scooter riders ...
I believe a time limit should be imposed to stop learners being on scooters year after year after year they need to do their full test as they will get into bad habits ..they already have bad habits cos they not been shown the correct way ...
