That tambourine part that Acuna is playing is not easy to play steady like that. Of course, Peter Erskine is holding down that impossible pocket........straight and steady! Among all the other great characteristics of his playing, Peter is a very consistent and even player!
i have heard this a thousand times, on mysterious traveler, and other WR cd's but this version is really outstanding. Metropole is some serious players.
I don't comment much, but my Goodness...I'm in tears..this is so f@$%in amazing!! One of the best renditions of a song I've EVER heard in my life!! Thank you for sharing..
I know, I’m stunned. Having listened to this tune/ all of Mysterious Traveller about a cpl hundred times back in the day, yep this arrangement is very accurate to the old recording. Zawinul was brilliant.
Exaxtly the same to me. Oh guys, I miss that man so much, he's been like a father to me, like an older brother, like a deep friend, leading me across the sound and the colours of our wonderful planet. And this without even having met him 💓❗
The rhythm section is clearly the backbone here - excellent job of Alex Acuna and Peter Erskine! Because of its intensity and length, Zawinul provided originally 2 drummers...
FANTASTIC. Streaming this video to the TV, grinning ear to ear, trying to explain to my wife why I'm overcome with joy listening/watching an orchestral rendition of one of my favorite fusion song!!!!!
Truly one of the greatest through composed tunes of the 20th century. Zawinul’s genius in improvising and capturing the moment live is I think unequalled.

Wow, what a beutiful tribute. We miss you Joe. You are unique!
Zawinul WAS unique. He was born in Vienna, but became one of the best US funk/fusion keyboard players. He was a mainstay of Cannonball Adderley’s group, played with Miles Davis and many others. He was the co-founder and main arranger/composer for Weather Report.
I've been listening to Nubian Sundance, since I got the Mysterious Traveler album for Christmas 1976. It's my favorite song of all time and Zawinul was my favorite musician/composer. (actually got to meet at the Blue Note and he signed a photo that I have hanging in my house). So, to hear this version with some of the musicians that had played with Zawinul was nice. AND YES, I THINK THEY DID A GOOD JOB WITH THEIR ADAPTATION OF THE SONG.
The guitar solo is by Fareed Haque. Peter is playing a rhythm figure. Bravo to the Metropole for pulling this one off. A wonderful version of a truly magnificent piece of music.
Wow, this orchestra (with Vince Mendoza at the helm) is such a treasure. Check out all of their recordings! Fantastic arrangements and performances of a lot of jazz fusion music (I know, I don't like the label either) that doesn't get enough respect in an era in which critics (and even a lot of fans) seem inclined to dismiss jazz fusion as a lot of misguided wankery. Sure, some of it was, but since when do we judge a genre by its worst moments rather than its best? (My only quibble with the video is, all those cameras, but nobody can figure out which guitarist is soloing? Jesus. . .)
Gorgeous arrangement of one of Weather Report’s greatest pieces- expertly played by the orchestra. Loved the brass voicings. One of Joe Zawinul’s most masterful compositions and wonderful to hear played by this great group of musicians.
SO great to see this music orchestrated and played in tribute (in kind with the stuff Wayne did). It shows just how elevated those guys were (Weather Report, Miles, etc.) all the way back in their day. Something was really going on, and I'll always love that music. Tribute in order. Thanks for posting!
Hey, me too. Parallel universes. My uncle played me Mysterious Traveler the year it came out when I was a kid. I'm 48 now. I still default to Weather Report as my yardstick for all things. The saddest and happiest emotional moments of my life. Tale Spinnin' easily the ultimate for me. No finer expression of joy. I never thought I'd ever see or hear another set of musicians attempt Nubian Sundance. It's amazing. I once bought Mr Zawinul a drink at the bar of the Jazz Café in London. So glad.
Saw Weather Report do this at The Berkeley Auditorium back in the day when this came out.It was phenomenal, as was the opening act Herbie Hancock and The Headhunters...great concert.
Wow. I bought Mysterious Traveler when it came out. My only non rock Cassette. Most of my teenage Friends would sort of try to like it but I loved it. Drove 100000 miles to it. This drum beat still influences my writing. I can't believe how much this just flys and really captures every nuance.
Thanks. I share the memory. It was the spring-summer of 1974, an important point in my life. I listened to this song and "Mysterious Traveler" so many times. What a great group, headlined by the 2 legends.
European audiences listen deeply. They may show their enthusiasm after the piece or after the concert, but while it is playing, they listen. Probably comes from European classical music etiquette.
@@raymondwelborne4998 the classical music etiquette theory makes sense I guess, but still low enthusiasm in my opinion. This stuff is not for everyone that's for sure.
@@MultiBadBass I hear you. Check out the Snarky Puppy ''We Like It Here'' interviews. They talk about having the same reaction in certain places in Europe.
Just tonight I was just reading about this concert in Peter Erskine's book, No Beethoven, and was surprised to find this online. Very cool, thanks for posting!
Damn!. Fantastic arrangement and performance. Not an easy piece to play, being based on Joe's improvisational excursions at home one afternoon. Gotta love Erskine's look to Acuna at 8:50. Classic.
Dallas Stiles May I also suggest to take a look at: Steps Ahead North Sea Jazz Festival Trains, which is an older video with him so far younger Peter Erskine and also Victor on bass.
Actually this solo is played by Amit Chaterjee (worked with Joe Zawinul also for years). No idea why the video is showing Peter Tiehuis during the solo since he is not playing it. Amit's face is shown in 5:11 for a few seconds! Cheers.
Joe had always stated...the invention of the synthesizor....saved his life..that instrument allowed him to recreate the whole string section plus! ...I only have one request.. would have loved to hear his acoustic.piano..especiallybon some of the chords in this song..these cats are hot...some of the best musicians in the world..I'm sure
The level of musicianship here is astonishing. Reading at that level that many musicians is a lesson in itself for many of today's younger musicians to take the ART of reading SERIOUS. Victor's TONE is impeccable throughout. Gotta love a FENDER Jazz-Active or Passive. 5 Stars
Unbelieveable !!!Thank you ,what a hommage to Weather Report, excellence!!! A great song from the majestic "Mysterious traveller " album I think that where is Joe Zawinul , he's happy to heard this Thanks;; ThX
Stupendo riconoscimento al grande Joseph:grazie per sempre per i tuoi doni.Conservo gelosamente l'autografo avuto dopo il concerto al Blue Note di Milano con i giovani della nuova band-
wow , im definitely blown away. Who knew Mr. Rogers was so hip! -- LOL -- No, all kidding aside, I know this is a serious collaboration of some master musicians. Much respect!!
I loved it! Nubian Sundance is a long time fav of mine by the undisputed leader of world fusion music no other than the super group Weather Report! This orchestra enhanced interpretation gave it another tasteful spin on a classic. However, i still favor the original with Joe of course and the vocal chants. Well done!
To require an ad lib Symphony Orchestra to perform a "cover" of the original speaks emphatically to the Conductor and musical instrumentalists' true appreciation of the pioneering artist's gifted vision and talent! Very favorable, IMHO!
This is soo fucking great-whoever scored it for orchestra is a true genius..All the parts are there with power..Erskine and Acuna driving the hell out of it. I've had this Weather record since I was in Jr High School. My Dad took me to see them at a club in Raleigh NC. This was the first song they played and they just smoked it..This is a stunning version- I'm knocked out..I'm playing it again right now. Is this concert on CD I wonder?
Yes, I have Mysterious Traveler upstairs, from my college days, along with Chick Corea, Brian Auger, Herbie Hancock, Mahavishnu Orchestra , on, and on..great times!
A masterful song. This performance of Nubian Sundance is incredible. It's as if the song becomes this immense powerful ...being or how can I say... entity. Imagine sitting center in front of that. The ULTIMATE audiophile/music lover experience. Is this from a full concert on DVD? Never seen, I ask because I WANT THIS in FULL!
The great job by the Metropole Orchestra under Vince doing Zawinul's burner from Mysterious Traveller with three great "ringers" from Weather Report. What other Orchestra could do this?
SO good, my favourite WR piece from what I think is their best album, Mysterious Traveler. I wonder if Vince Mendoza did the arrangements on this also?
never saw video of wp performing this masterwork though they did a gig at lincoln center with dancers that i missed if you can imagine .metropole is awesome and the boys nailed it , awesome
Quite an ambitious undertaking to reproduce this piece. Nice homage, but nothing can duplicate the sonic cornucopia that the original recording delivers.
This orchestral rendition of the classic adds a texture to the composition that is incredible. Not better than the original..just a different flavor...Many Thanks
Sweet jesus what manner of sorcery is this? Fabulous. Erskine, Bailey, Acuna - and Vince Mendoza - all monsters.
Brilliant! Peter Erskine is better than ever. Bravo, Peter!
That tambourine part that Acuna is playing is not easy to play steady like that. Of course, Peter Erskine is holding down that impossible pocket........straight and steady! Among all the other great characteristics of his playing, Peter is a very consistent and even player!
AWESOME TRIBUTE TO JOE ZAWINUL.....Tears of Joy !!
Two of the best drummers in the world: Peter Erskine and Alex Acuna! And what a masterpiece from Joe Zawinul!
i have heard this a thousand times, on mysterious traveler, and other WR cd's but this version is really outstanding. Metropole is some serious players.
I don't comment much, but my Goodness...I'm in tears..this is so f@$%in amazing!! One of the best renditions of a song I've EVER heard in my life!! Thank you for sharing..
Well it's pretty much verbatim what Weather Report played except for solos revealing how intrinsically orchestral Zawinul's musical conception was.
I know, I’m stunned. Having listened to this tune/ all of Mysterious Traveller about a cpl hundred times back in the day, yep this arrangement is very accurate to the old recording. Zawinul was brilliant.
Being a big fan of Weather Report since about age 15 or so, this brought tears to my eyes! WELL DONE!!!!!! R.I.P. Mr. Z.

I'm quite sure it has been published on audio-CD. All arrangements were done by Vince Mendoza, the conductor.
Outstanding arranging! He caught every nuance.

An amazing rendition of a classic Weather Report tune.
Fantalicious orchestral tribute to super guru Mr. Zawinul!

God bless him, joe z. and jaco....
WOW! They did that song fantastically. And to have some of the Weather Report members play with the orchestra. Incredible.
In lovely Holland its possible the big metropole orchestra with the old musicians of weather report playing Joe Zawinuls Nubian Sundance
Thanks Joe for such a wonderful piece. And thanks to the orch. Sounds great. Never thought I’d hear a cover of this.
No shit...and boy did they pull it off...amazing...
Gorgeous arrangement of one of Weather Report’s greatest pieces- expertly played by the orchestra. Loved the brass voicings. One of Joe Zawinul’s most masterful compositions and wonderful to hear played by this great group of musicians.
iirc the original track had 2 drummers , Erskine is amazing in replicating the sound.
I believe 2 drummers AND 1 percussionist..
Thank You, Geepereet! This is a magnificent tribute to Joe Z. and that inspirational band some of us were blessed to experience in years past.
Fantastic - some seriously epic tambourine playing!
Ikr? Alex Acuna is actually a legit badass
Thanks for pointing that out. I was just thinking, man holding that rythem for so long with Peter. Not easy to do. This is cool
The tambourine. A very underrated instrument. Played by a master.
Erskine is cookin' here.
Thanks for your comment and I hope he likes this as much as you do, have fun! Kindest regards, Aart
Bellissima versione di un capolavoro !!!!! Nessuno degli ex Weather Report qui presenti inoltre aveva mai suonato nel brano originale del 1974
Look at how many instruments it takes to match the sounds on Zawinul's keyboards. It literally takes a full symphony orchestra!
I was amazed they could duplicate the sound.I'm stunned.
it doesn't 'take' it , they just did it
precisely!
Some Jerks: Joe Was an orchestra unto himself with all those keyboards.
Big amps didn't hurt, either.
Hate to be Debbie Downer but not all songs should be done by an orchestra
'A Masterpiece' - RIP Joe Zawinul. You were a genius
Absolutely.
An aetherous interpretation of a joyful masterpiece of the seventies . A Bravo to all!
I could give this 1000 likes. Fantastic cover of a mind blowing piece of music. Multiple dittos to all the prior comments.
Absolutely brilliant. R.I.P Zawinul.

This very well done, highly energetic and with the colours and heft of a big orchestra - thank you so much for sharing!
for you Genesis fans, this is the drum beat Phil Collins "borrowed" for the tune "Wat Gorilla"
Exactly

Kudos to Peter Erskine for keeping that BD pattern for 10 minutes!
How the hell is the audience so quiet when they applaud?? I'd be jumping out of my seat, hot damn!! Too much for them I guess...
Very different crowd from rock & roll, for sure. I noticed that when I saw Weather Report in Santa Monica.
Most likely because they don't "get it". Like I heard a long time ago about jazz music: if I have to explain it to you, you won't understand it!

Magnificent! I think Joe would love it. Looks like it was a blast for all on stage most of all.
I always heard the groove with the backbeat on '3'. To hear it this way makes it a brand new experience. Great playing by all.
I love that we can keep the pieces of "our " time into the future
Perhaps the main reason I once took the initiative to create this. 😉
Agree. The scoring is really brilliant and Acuña / Erskine amazing.
A song about celebration of music, finest thing humans created.
At IU I took a few lessons with Jim Beard who had a band called Energy Liberation Unit
This deserves a publication on DVD.
Erskine commands.
With that rhythm section, that orchestra and that score, the results could only be superb! Too bad Shorter wasn't available.
Congrats to whoever wrote the arrangement Justice was done!

Great performance....! Vince Mendoza has made the Metropole Orchestra one of the best in the world.
this is truly the work of a genius!
Haaaa! A great piece!!! I am sure it has many of them near cramps in hand and feet ...
Great music, great players, but the MAGIC dust is sprinkled all over it by the sheer brilliance of Vince Mendoza's arrangement .. and conducting.
