    Kunzite From Afghanistan With Edward Boehm by GIA. What is kunzite? Edward Boehm discusses a spectacular, 85-carat kunzite from Afghanistan and the unique properties that make up this gem. Kunzite gemstone, considered to be an alternative for the February birthstone, is the best-known variety of the mineral spodumene and it gets its delicate color from trace amounts of manganese. Always attractive, it suffers somewhat from a lack of consumer recognition. However, this can translate to reasonable prices at the jewelry counter. In its largest sizes and finest colors, kunzite appeals to discriminating collectors. One of the key kunzite value factors, and the reason why collectors love it so much, is its color range, from delicate pastel pink to intense violetish-purple. Kunzite crystal can come both naturally and heated, otherwise known as irradiated. In addition to Afghanistan, San Diego, California is another important source of kunzite.

    Love Kunzites and Hiddenite, very sparkly stones but I have never seen one in that color before, not a purple person, but I sure love how they sparkle. I also like the greener Hiddenite and love the pinks! Wow they sure are pretty. They mine them now in California also down near San Diego and they are very nice too.

    A question for you if you were to pick up an irradiated crystal that has lustre and brilliance, could that be dangerous?

    • @JLards
      @JLards 8 лет назад +2

      +David Laing they are stored until the levels are safe, partly adding to cost of nice colour material.

    • @ArmandCury

    • @elcuy7518
      @elcuy7518 3 года назад +4

      Any kind of price per carat estimate for colored stones (I just mean not diamond) is really heavily dependent on all sorts of factors and ultimately the gem owners asking price. For instance, someone may rate this gem at $50/ct but with everything considered it should fetch much more than a total of $4000 at 80 cts.
      C-axis cut to maximize color with kunzite you will usually lose much more weight cutting to see the C-axis. The color is beyond exceptional I could see this being a 10-15k stone or more.

      Ultimately there are a large quantity of incredibly beautiful and huge crystals coming form Afghanistan.
      I bought different pink and green very nice and large stones.
      Only thing that is rarely notice is that kunzite can lose color dramatically if exposed to direct sunlight or source of ultra Violet radiation.
      So I find myself with pale pinks and green even I take care of it.
      Green kunzite (not hiddenite) from Afganistan is irradiated and color is extremely instabile.

      Exactly! The northern mountainous region is filled with precious gemstones and the Afghan people are extracting it in primitive ways. Rich investors would LOVE to bring machinery up there and enhance the process to collect gem stones.
