      TheAlbinoskunk "You can't shoot something with a laser and be *surprised* when it catches on fire" This had me laughing out loud.
      In one of my materials classes we had a project that involved cutting masonite with a laser bed similar to this one. Well, it turns out masonite has imperfections that, when heated, will combust with a loud pop and potentially deposit your sheet in a new orientation, ruining your cut. So all day long for a couple of weeks there would be students staring with great anxiety into the machine, with a constant background of POOFs, POPs and BANGs. Good times.

      "You can't shoot something with a laser and be surprised when it catches on fire" is the kind of sage advice that definitely belongs on every home shop and makerspace laser safety sign, right along with "Do not look directly at laser beam with remaining eye."

    There should be one of these is ever major city in the country; what an awesome concept. So many of us want to do major projects, that we need the shop space, tooling and sometimes extra know-how, but we just can't afford to put the tools we need in our garages or apartments! If I lived around the Boston area, I would certainly become a familiar face there!

    Sorry, but the anvil is made from rail, not tie. Railroad ties are the wooden crossbeams that maintain spacing for the rail. Just in case anyone else was wondering. Otherwise, I'd be a kid in a candy store that also sold toys. :)

    • @shubinternet
      @shubinternet 3 года назад

      It’s not uncommon in the Artist Blacksmith community for people to make their own smaller anvils from railroad rail. However, you need serious hearing protection when using any anvil, but especially one made from railroad rails. I don’t know why anvils made from railroad rails are so much louder and ring so much more, but maybe because it’s because rails are made from a forging process while anvils are usually cast.

    Love the traveling stories. I was once upon a time hauling a stuffed horse from an artist (Mr. Natural) who had loaned it to Paul Dresher to the Oakland studio and we pulled over to check that he was secure before getting on the freeway. He was all strapped down in the bed of a pickup truck with a cover over the head and such to protected it and the tail was bagged up etc. Anyway I'm in the back making sure all the straps are still tight and he won't go flying and this woman pulls up behind us and starts screaming about how inhumane we are treating the horse. When she stopped for air I just said "He doesn't mind he's pining for the fjords" and knocked on his hind quarters which of course sounded like knocking on wood. Didn't really make her any happier but it stopped her ranting.
    The artist laughed and said that when he had originally hauled to his place he stopped at a diner with the horse in the bed of a pickup and drew such a crowd that he made the evening news.
