    I am growing kiwi from seed as well and they hit the 13 month mark! Guess I need 11 years and 11 months more to wait! I love that my kiwi leaves look the same as yours - velvety and broad! Thanks for sharing... there is still hope! I may get lucky with male and female plants as I do have 11 plants!

    Usually have 30 - 40 fruits but this year I stop counting when I got to 200 flowers. The vine is full of them. It has thrived on neglect apart from good farm yard muck.

    I have a kiwi vine, 5 years old now , bought as a young plant. It is really growing well and is huge now ! Last 2 years, it flowered heavily ! I live in the South East too , because of the rains last year, snails 🐌 destroyed all the flowers !!!! This year also was full of flowers but gail force winds destroyed all and the vine fell !!! It was hard work 😓 but I managed to tie it against the wall , on a metal bracket ! Its fine , is a tough one ! but lost all the flowers to winds !
    Hopefully it will flower again next year , hope to see some fruit maybe !
    Yours is very healthy too . Mine is 5 years okd but very big spread !
    Love all your plants 😊👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    I live in NE Essex and bought 1 male and 1 female 'Hayward' about 25 years ago. They are both still going strong against a south-facing garage wall, though the female is showing her age, (like me :O). She started fruiting after about 8 years and my harvest has gone from strength to strength. The biggest crop was about four years ago, producing 800+ which beat my 2008 record of 781! I don't feed either of them but have to constantly prune them throughout the summer as they grow about 15ft, each frond, per year. The fruits are about the size of a duck egg and I eat them constantly from December to March as well as giving loads away. No spraying, feeding or watering is necessary - just LOTS of space!

      Amiguru nice to hear more and more people having success with these plants. My problem is they were grown from seed so I'm not sure how viable it will be in producing fruit, My plan in the spring is to graft some cuttings onto it from my friends kiwi (his has always fruited with nice size fruits and quite early to) and hope to get some fruit that way. If all else fails it works well as a privacy plant! Chris

      When growing Kiwi from seed you get more male (arround 80%) than female. You have to wait them to grow and flower and then you can see which are male and female. You will get viable plants, but it will take more time than if you grow them from cuttings. Every plant grown from seed will be a new variety; it can be better or worse than the original. That´s the magic of growing from seed.

    I have been growing and harvesting kiwis in the UK for about 30 years now. It is important to know that they are dioecious, that is they have separate gender plants. To produce fruits on varieties such as 'Hayward' you need one of each sex of course.
    In my best year my female produced 800+ fruits. It should be born in mind that they need a warm sunny location to do well and, most importantly, they do know how to GROW! The fronds make about 10-20 feet of growth per year so plenty of judicious pruning is required!
    Good luck to anyone who tries but bear in mind that the minimal period to the first flowering is about 8 years - so not a short term experiment.

    Amazing! Kiwi vines are not usually self fertile unless you buy a self fertile cultivar, so maybe your vine needs a female. I have a couple of small vines and one flowered in its third year, but I didn't grow from seed from a supermarket fruit. Amazing!

    If you think it's a male kiwi, plant a grafted female next to it and you might aswell get some kiwis . Good looking plant . Cheers Vinny

      Fruits For Life Hey Vinny, I was thinking about maybe doing that, but there is another plant next to it, that I don't think has flowered yet, (trying to work out which vine flowers are attached to which plant) so Im thinking maybe this could be my hope of a female?!?! I grew a few plants and ended up planting two next to each other. This is before I even really knew about kiwis needing male and female plants. So Im gonna hope that this other vine will flower and be female, otherwise I may go down the grafting way! You seem pretty good at grafting, should get you to come do it for me!! ; )

    • @FruitsForLife

      Hi, okk you got two kiwis that's cool, sorry I didn't hear that , maybe you mentioned it😎. Lol I'm not really good at grafting, this year I had good success with apple trees , but I'm not good with stone fruits and vines. Vines need a grafting tool and a good rootstock . I mentioned that because as you already have flower on your kiwi, you could buy a grafted male or female kiwi which will flower within 2 years (since they are grafted) rather than planting a seedling which will take another five to ten years to flower. But the plant itself look really beautiful . Happy gardening.

      Fruits For Life I don't think I mentioned in the video about there being two plants, so no worries. Will let you know what happens with it! cheers.

    Wow, that looks rampant and you can really see how it's been romping away for 13 years! How do you tell the difference between males and females mate and have you ever made a mistake with this matter? I had always been under the impression that kiwi vines fail to fruit AND ripen in the UK unless they're grown under glass and I'd be interested to hear if you've ever managed to develop any of those furry fruits mate.

      Didn't last year, but it is fully loaded with flowers this year, so I'm hoping some may set. If I don't get any this year I'm gonna maybe graft a female onto it, but we will see what happens.

      Thank you. I have masses of flowers on mine and a lot of fruit have set (it's the self fertile Jenny variety) but so far, in ten years, they have never grown to full size and I wondered if anybody ever does manage it!

    • @gotropicaluk8362

      The Awesome Tropical Germinator I think most kiwi varieties are hardy in the south of the UK. Im not sure how they do further north but it has been outside for the last 10 years and grows like crazy! Trying to keep it in a managable size is the hardest thing!

      @gotropicaluk8362  6 лет назад

      baldieman64 that is disappointing! The only one I know locally that produces good fruit is ‘hayward’ but you need a male and a female to produce fruit. Here’s the video showing the fruit and plants. m.ruclips.net/video/tTjwVN8wElM/видео.html

    • @jakandle
      @jakandle 5 лет назад

      Yes, same with me.I purchased three plants online from a supposedly reputable seller. Supposed to have been 2 females (Hayward and Bruno ) and a male (Atlas). Turns out I've got one that flowers well but unfortunately male, one that has never flowered and one that looks like the variety "Jenny" or "Issai" that produces tiny unusable fruits and is a waste of space.
      So much time, effort and patience and so far... bugger all. O well all part of gardening. Will have to check the local garden centres and buy two replacements that I can see are definitely female.
