Wow! I had no idea this was actually a thing! I've had this for years (I'm 72). I would try to find where or what was causing it, but nothing would show up, no rash, no insect bites, nothing. I'm glad to know this isn't an abnormal thing. The only thing I treat it with is a back scratcher. It helps temporarily, until it goes away on it's own, which it does after a couple days. Watching this got it going, but my back scratcher's across the room, and I have a cat on my lap. 😬

I use a dry brush, it seems to be the only thing that actually touches the itch and relieves it. I’ve had it for years. I figured some sort of nerve damage. I have that sensation in a couple of other places too, but it started just under my left shoulder blade.,I’m right handed.

Always thought it was either due to a mole/skin cancer (I live in the very SUNNY Outback of Australia) an insect bite or dry skin.
Over the years have asked Doctors and skin specialists to have a look, all have looked, shrugged their shoulders and said "there is nothing there".
I now suspect now that it is caused by my bad sitting and/or standing posture. I am working on my posture.

My skin is calmer and I have fewer facial wrinkles. My hair is thicker, too. I pat my skin dry with a soft towel. Please avoid scratching with anything, including hard towels. It makes everything much worse. Simple non-perfumed lotions are best like Sorbolene or QV lotion. Wash your bed sheets regularly as skin mites can cause itching but don't use lots of detergent in your washing machine as you may be allergic to that. Try to avoid any hard back scratchers. Exercise helps everything but splash your face with cool water afterwards. Meditation helps all problems in a general low key way.

Thank you for posting this. I found a couple articles online a while back on this. I’m 66 and have had it for several years. I have found the most help by stretching the muscles in that area. A good stretch will sometimes help relieve the itching for at least a day or two at a time. That is the only thing that has consistently helped.

This is a very good explanation of this condition which I have suffered from for over 20 years. I have tried the various treatments mentioned but these really only treat the symptoms rather than treat the cause.
I have personally found that chiropractic treatments and posture changes have been the most effective way to treat this condition. Most of us are guilty of sloppy posture and becoming more aware of this and adjustments from a chiropractor or physical therapist will help the most imo

I was injured in a car accident in 1994. For several years I suffered severe dibilitating muscle spasms. Then I was treated with injections (nerve blocks). Today I have this chronic itching in the exact spot as in your demonstration. I am always near my back scratcher By myself I couldn't possibly reach that spot to apply a patch or ointment.

I have had this for years. In 2000 I had an accident that damaged the thoracic area of my back. When I asked my dermatologist about it I described the itch as "intense", and told her it was different than my usual skin itches. She said it was most likely a nerve damage issue. She prescribed Ketoconazole cream and hydrocortisone cream. I use both and it stops the itch for about 24 hours, until I reapply. I stopped scratching it because that seems to explode the itching. What is hard to remedy is the fact that I am female and need to wear a bra. This is proving to be an item of torture. It moves just slightly on my back every time I move and causes more symptoms. Mine is only on the right side. It takes getting used to and after practice, you can ignore it to a degree.

I'm a woman who has this on the right side of my spine and more mid-back. I have some suggestions: Using lotion twice a day to keep it hydrated (prevent dry skin from exacerbating the problem). Icing it to stop the itch really works well. Trying to do exercises which strengthen the muscles between the shoulder blades helps. Also the vibration from the Next Roller is a tool when the itching is intense. It's also been better since I started using a "LifePro vibration plate", which I purchased for moving my lymph system. It's similar to the Next Roller, in effect, so vibration seems to help curb the itch. Oh! Try a bra which clasps in the front. It seems to work better. Mine is on the bra strap line too. Good luck!

Myself and another person in this comment section had it from food allergies. Try starting with brown rice, ghee, and bragg's soy, eat nothing else for a couple days, then start adding food, wait to see when the itching starts again. For me, it was onions, for you it might be something else.
If I eat onions, within the hour, right under my left shoulder blade, total fire.
It might be onions for you, too, or another food, but as changing diet worked for two of us in the comments, odds are, it will work for you.

I first saw a dermatologist about this when I was in my early 60s, and he couldn't find a skin-related answer to the problem. To his credit, he guessed that it could be a nerve misfiring. This was in the 1990s (I'm 92 now) and I had recently had a compression fracture in the neck area, so I assumed that was the cause. When I was young, I examined the theory that antiperspirant aluminum might be causing breast cancer issues and also thought that if the armpits were one of the body’s main avenues for toxin elimination, there must be a penalty for rerouting those toxins. So I only use natural deodorant. Later in life I became a massage therapist and learned about different routes the lymph takes in our bodies. I had a few clients that were concerned about acne on their backs. Since the cells of the skin there are not made to release these toxins, they might build up to form cysts which then break. I suggested not using antiperspirants to these clients and all (4) their backs cleared up in a couple of weeks. I’m not sure, but itching may also be the body’s way of needing scratching to increase circulation to facilitate release of the buildup of toxins in some cases.

Like so many commentors I feel so relieved to see this has a name!!! I thought I was crazy! Mine came in early age though. My 20's. The itching was CRAZY, in that exact spot, with intense heat. Through the years it comes and goes. Less as I age, actually, but what worsened was the shoulder pain and spasms on that side. I don't know if they're related? But I have INTENSE to small spasms and a deep muscle pain, neither of which seem to accompany the itching necessarily, or even each other. Never seems to be a pattern or chronic "reason".

I am so happy to find out what this is I've been experiencing this annoying thing for some time, and I couldn't figure what was causing it, I thought maybe nerve damage from back surgeries I've had, when it flairs up it itches like hell! drives me crazy! I use anything that can reach back there to scratch, and some Cortisone Cream, then it will just go away until next time. Thank you so much for the video.

Oh wow, I'm soooo glad I found this video. My mother has been itching her back for years and I've been looking for remedies for her without knowing what was causing it. No doctors could help. I got her a topical steriod cream which has been helping but it's a symptomatic help. I'll now look for exercises as mentioned in the video. Thanks so much. I have subscribed to this channel right away.

Wow, this just poped up on my recom. and I'm gobsmacked. This is what I had for the last three months coupled with random stabbing pain. I went to the doctors and got physio therapy for a while and it's getting better but I did not know that this has a name. I'm a bit too young to have it but I had to take some meds for the last two years that put me artificially into menopause 30 years early.
Exercise helped me a lot and I hope it will be gone for ever as the itching was sometimes worse enough to keep me awake at night and the random stabbing pain was hard to ignore when I had to sit at a desk. Thanks for finally giving me a very possible diagnosis

Very interesting! I had an area on back (T 5 & 6) & my dermatologist & he said it was due to my desiccating discs. I suspect there is more than 1 cause of itching, but you have enlightened me to other nerves involved. Thanks so much.

Astonished to find this video. Fortunately I have found a chiropractor who, not only doesn't think I'm crazy, he has been treating me through a very gentle form of myofacial release. It's based on vectoring and is part of my treatment for chronic Lyme disease. Thank you for posting. I will share this video with him. It may help in adjusting how he treats this particular issue.

Daayuuum!! This came up in my suggestions. I don't know why. This is exactly what has been happening to me for years. It happens in exactly the same place as pictured. I always keep a back scratcher close at hand. I never mentioned it to a doctor because I didn't know how to explain it since there were no bites, rashes, etc. I have had 4 spinal fusions done so maybe because of this. At least I now know I'm not crazy. Thank you for this information!!

I have been affected by the itchy area on my back in the left side for 7-8 years. I am right handed. In healthcare with demanding physical work and inadvertently bad posture. I have been so amazed and disappointed to learn that the majority of physicians and chiropractors have not even heard the name of the condition let alone treatment for it. Almost one year into this after searching and searching I knew what it was.Notalgia Paresthtica originates from skin’s sensory nerves sending all kinds of signals to the brain including burning, pain and mostly itching for me. Why it starts can be from anything that disrupts or infringes the nerves at deeper or superficial levels. Before all the itchiness started, right in the area I had a little white head which I could never see but could feel reaching that spot with difficulty with my fingertip. It was the size of a pin head and being a picker I loved to find it and scratch it with my nail until I felt the little pinhead come loose and come off. It was barely visible or feelable to anyone else but I loved to find it and pick on it. For years I would cause the area to always have a scab and just waiting for the pinhead white head to grow underneath I would even pick on and remove the scab. To find the pin head. This went on for about 3 years until I gradually started feeling itchy sensations exactly over and surrounding the pinhead/ scab area. The itch got more and more and has never gone away since then. Interestingly Back then I did not have any of the tension and tightness feeling that I recently get in my left shoulder which is always after a few hours of work. When I put everything together I figure the picking and scabbing that I caused in the area brought many more nerves to the skin in That spot. NP is a sensory neuropathy that causes a dis regulated * itch* response which is not clearly understood. In me after a couple years of itchy back eventually another itchy area on my stomach appeared. both areas for years itchy now without any skin issues. The dis regulated itch process seems to me, unleashes itch mechanism that can eventually travel to and settle in another area but not always.
Shocking is the number of doctors having no clue about this like the 5 that I went to ( until I diagnosed myself) and number of people affected not knowing what condition they have. For me nothing has helped treat it. Recently Used Kinesiology tape and it seemed promising. I guess because it keeps the muscles stretched and reduced the tightness that affects the nerve/ s. Right now I am also trying a lidocaine patch. My experience says Treatment will come within a series of actions and not any single one.
In certain university hospitals and for the first time *itch departments” are being established as itch process has never been researched and worked on adequately. Maybe now.

I think this is what I have. I'm 69 years old, and this itching started 2 years ago. And 2 years ago, my 114lb dog ran into me from my right side while he was chasing my other dog. I weigh 116lbs and when he hit me I flew up into the air and landed on my right side, and damaged ligaments in my right arm and knocked my upper back and neck out of alignment. I've also been getting chronic headaches. I use organic coconut oil on the left side of my back every night after I get out of the shower, which really helps, but is also temporary, relief lasting until about mid-day the next day. I'm pretty limber so although it's not easy to reach, I manage to get the coconut oil where I need it.
This video kind motivates me to get into my Chiropractor and see if the itching was brought on by misalignment of my spine.
