It's a high low siren, or blues and twos. it took me back to the 80's and 90's growing up in Sunderland and Newcastle.
There was a show called blues and twos from the 90's and many of the episodes are on RUclips, if you want to hear more of the siren.
I used to be able to know how far the emergency vehicle was, which one it would be and when it will pass, used to amaze my family and friends.

@@MementoMori-xx5qo yes high low's are common, but these days they seem to be quite long on both the high and low part.
The 0:17 one is the a short burst one like we had in the 80's and 90's, could be earlier but I was born in 1982.
If you look up blues and twos episodes on RUclips, you will hear it mainly on the ambulances but do hear it on some of the fire engines and police cars.

Blues 'n' twos means simply blue lights and two-tone horns. It has nothing to do with hi-lows. Electronic hi-lows are a relative newcomer compared to regular air-powered two-tones.

As a driver I dislike the current sirens as often they are not heard until the emergency vehicle is so close.I remember years ago some expert on tv mention that the sirens are the wrong decibel or something,and that's the problem.

I'm a response driver, and I can assure you that when you're running on blues and twos you're completely tuned into your driving, focusing on the road ahead and constantly conducting a dynamic risk assessment. You notice people stood filming, but unless they are placing themselves in a dangerous position you pay them no heed and they dont distract you.
Nice of you to raise the issue though, as you clearly care 👍
