I was going to write a comment about that exact missed penalty call! These days it seems you can't have body to body checks without being called for cross checking! But in this particular situation they seem to give leeway on warding off. We need to bring back the old school!
That's not a ward. The D-man was lift-checking the ball carrier's arm. A ward is called when an player who possesses the ball intentionally uses their free arm to physically obstruct the defender's body and or stick from checking.
