Why study Law at University if I don't want to become a lawyer?

  • A lot of people who study Law at University do so because they want to become practising lawyers, whether as barristers or solicitors. But it is not necessary to read Law at University to become a lawyer. Equally, studying Law at University is a legitimate subject for academic study even if you definitely do not want to become a lawyer or think that you may not become a practising lawyer. That is because the study of Law at University is not a vocational subject; it is an academic subject and an intellectual discipline.
Graham Virgo KC, Professor of English Private Law at the University of Cambridge, discusses the benefits of studying a law degree even if you do not wish to progress into the legal professions. Considerations include training the student to think and write logically and clearly; enabling the student to engage in the critical analysis; enabling the student to engage in a wide variety of different academic disciplines; and because the subject is interesting and intellectually stimulating.

    1) Practise your English - it has to be perfect
    2) Show proactiveness - try to get a part time job and try to get as much charity work on your CV as possible
    3) Try and get some experience shadowing some kind of lawyer in your local town - Phone around: people are always looking for someone to make coffee

I really like the way that Graham Virgo explains things.

Virgo is literally reading from a script. Sure, this helps keep his ideas more organized, but it kind of felt more like a rock instead of energy. I had to turn on CC in order to comprehend deeper on what he is saying.

It doesn't matter what you study, if you study at Cambridge... Of course you don't have to train as a lawyer after your degree. Cambridge opens up England's establishment, which is its whole point... Nothing to do with law.

Is it possible to study the PhD directly, so that the master is part of it, depending on the importance of the research?

The spirit of our higher angelic qualities, rather than our animalistic qualities. We must focus on the angelic attributes, because that will be our form, not the animal. This is what makes us truly alive and this is the full recovery.
