A good practice is to loosen the derby cover screws before draining the primary oil. If any screws strip out you can still ride if you can't get the strip screws out.

    Hey Cue
First of all Thank you for your service to our country! I’m also a Mobil 1 fan and I noticed that you use it in all three holes. I’ve heard of people doing this. Harley puts Formula+ in from the factory. But the dealer will try and sell you the 80W140 I understand that the 20W50 protects just as well and runs cooler.

great tutorial for us new CVO owners. We really appreciate this!! Please do a video on what is the normal operating temperatures are. on hot days 98-110-degree days my bike gets as high as 240-242 per the infotainment gauge. I am pretty sure that is the coolant temperature. Just trying to figure out at what temperature does oil breakdown in relation to the infotainment temperature gauge. It was nice on my 2019 fatboy, I had no temperature gauge, so I never worried LOL!!!

    • @RidingandWrenching

I've had a couple of people ask me that question. Highest temp that I've seen on a very hot day was abt 240. I was riding through NY on a very hot day (abt 95 degrees)....of course stuck in traffic! I use synthetic oil because it has a wider operating temperature range.

Here's my method (based on about 25 Harley Davidson oil changes): I used a sheet of newspaper folded over twice to make a channel under the oil filter out past the footboard, with a can at the end. I loosen the oil filter and the oil that spills out travels down the channel into the can. As soon as I get the oil filter out I push some paper shop towels into the space to soak up any further oil that spills out; on a good day I get no mess! I add some oil into the oil filter before spinning it on (this is what I was told to do by a very experienced mechanic, so I've always done it) The filter should be spun on until the rubber seal touches then turned an extra half to three quarters off a turn - no more.
I wouldn't put engine oil in the transmissions. Modern engine oils have a lot of additives (about 25% of the volume) that deal with the problems faced by engine oil but a good quality gear oil is what should go in the transmission; Harley Davidson actually now sell such an oil, if you want to stay with the brand. Add enough gear oil to reach the lower marker on the dipstick; more will make selecting gears rougher (again I learned this tip for the same old experienced Harley mechanic and it does work).
The primary transmission should only have enough oil to reach the bottom of the clutch plate - NO MORE. I use a torch to help see inside and add the oil slowly to get it to the correct level (as stated in the workshop manual) If you just add a quart, or whatever, you'll end up with too much and this is what makes finding neutral hard on so many Harleys.
    I always wear gloves.
I won't say which brand of oils I use as that's a whole other debate, but I use engine oil for the engine and gear oil for the transmission and primary transmission oil for the primary.
    Love your channel!

    Pros on watching ur vid:
1- You use Mobil 1 just like I.
2- You improvised with the engine oil filter to drain it out to cause no Mess. I learn something new from you just now.
3- You have a fancy stand that gives you easy access to drain your oils without rotating the oil pan.
4- You are thorough and knows what you are doing.
    Cons
1- Mobil 1 is great and specially V-Twin 20W50 but Primary shouldn’t be with the same oil. There is specific design primary oil from Harley or other manufacturer like Red-Line. And if you cannot find at the store and are on a budget you can opt for Synthetic Blend or Cruid Oil from 10w50 or 15w50. That is the best to prevent the seals from mixing oil from your tranny. Full synthetic on Primary is too thin. It may not matter now but will be the cause of a seal leak very premature.
2- Primary oil is indeed 32 ounces but you have to keep in mind oil level and draining aren’t always exact. There could be a sludge on the primary that’s there and cannot be seen. Something like a thick residue oil. For that Harley Manual has a guide-line where the oil level should be. It shouldn’t exceed that line. It won’t hurt the engine now but with too much oil, it’s the fastest way to damage the Primary seal and cause leaks.

    • @Mr.FLOYDs
      @Mr.FLOYDs 5 месяцев назад

Also I’m not sure if I saw this right, did you put 4 quarts of oil on the engine?
4 quarts would be good if you are just doing a simple oil change without touching the Oil Filter.
5 Quarts is recommended when changing with the Oil Filter. You can double check on your engine Dipstick after the initial 4 quarts fill. You will see the dipstick is extremely low. Your oil light won’t come on while riding and will be on when the bike is off like all bikes even if you had the 5 quarts but what you now created is a temperature issue.
For instance on my Police Road King back in the day I would put exactly 4 quarts with the oil filter change. Every time I speed past 103-105 the Intake always spurs oil from the breather port like it has a blow-bie issue. Then the back popping is crazy and I have to clean the intake. Too much oil around it and it’s no longer getting fresh air. It’s mixed with oil.
I recently change my oil from my Road Glide and does the same riding, only this time I get a top speed of 110 Mph. I checked my filter after 1000 miles of riding and no oil residue. No popping also. Otherwise I would have checked my filter before 1000 miles.
In other words with a less sufficient oil at 8000 RPM your cylinder Rings heat cycle exceed at least 10% more than of what it should have.

Appreciate the feedback. I have been using Mobil 1 on all of my bikes. My 18 RG has 99,000 miles and no issues (related to oil!) I have tried gear oil and didn't notice a difference in ride/shift quality. Harley Syn3 is recommended for all 3 holes. Mobil 1 also claims to be good for engine/trans/primary.

@@RidingandWrenching Well it’s only a statistic. Not really crucial. I have been through some occasions before killing an engine where my oil drain plug gets loose n leaks oil and have to refill before going home n on my change n repair I find out I only have 1/4 of a quart of oil left n the engine was running extremely dry.
N ur not a person that’s doing 110 or like I was doing 105 to really put the engine temps at its peak so u should be doing fine. Also majority of Harley owners including some shops would fill up to 4 quarts of oil n save that 1 quart n claim it’s not necessary.
The only time u get a full 5 quart engine oil is when u buy the bike 0 miles from the factory. I prefer to always maintain it at 5 quarts to follow the right level from the dipstick. N trust me I was hesitating to add more oil past 4 quarts n add little by milliliters until I realized the right level requires a full extra quart. I was as surprised.
99k miles!! Hats off to u sir!
